“Tritium is the seemingly inconsequential item upon which everything else depends. Without it, there can be no modern nuclear weapons, and thus no nuclear deterrence”
Commentary from a senior NNSA official.
Good high-level overview, even if my work isn’t linked here.
Really love how @funranium.bsky.social hijacked this for a Fine Cognacs thread.
This is the real infrastructural Bluesky deep lore that keeps this place afloat.
Na zdravje!
"The path forward is obvious. We let Sauron retain full power for another two years. Let the people experience a little more darkness while we clean house. Get our own ranks in order. Get rid of all those unity-chasing wackos that are tearing our Fellowship apart."

The article is worth reading, and this diagnosis from @radiofreetom.bsky.social is a reasonable take, but, if so, what’s the desired state?
How difficult should it be for a man to not work and in what particular aspects should not working for a man be more difficult?
What about wealthy men?
The article is not a 20 page research paper. It's a summary of a lot of trends, including research that looks back to the late 20th century. (My pet theory: Look closely at what happens after passing the ADA.)
But the reality is that young men don't work because it's easy not to work.
It is essential that these plain truths be spoken and repeated. Many prominent republicans allied with Trump including Sec. Rubio have previously supported the exact opposite of Trump and Vance’s current posture toward Ukraine.
Only cowardice and their own hunger for power keeps them silent.
Me: "It cannot be stated often enough or vociferously enough: the Trump Administration is helping Russia to conquer Ukraine. The United States of America has taken the side of an aggressor against its innocent victim. We are helping our actual enemies" www.aei.org/foreign-and-...

Russia's KOSMOS 2612 executed multiple burns to intersect that orbit of the US-owned ICEYE-X36 satellite, which is currently supplying information to Ukraine.
Today, the Russian satellite passed within 26 meters of the US satellite.
Will Russia attack a US satellite? Will Trump care?
Trump made far more money in his first year in back in office than he has ever made IN HIS LIFE, and it was completely, undeniably intentional. We showed in a recent report that when Trump became the presumptive GOP nominee in 2024, he began a spree of corporate formation that continues to this day
JD Vance: "I've not seen a single shred of evidence that Donald Trump participates or sanctions in that corruption ... I've not once seen evidence that Donald Trump has enriched himself"
If I’m not enmeshed in the Elizabeth Holmes-o-sphere beyond reading some contemporaneous news articles and approvingly nodding when she got sent to jail, will You Can See Everything be meaningful?
(let’s say I don’t have a lot of grey matter devoted to the art of documentary filmmaking, either)
So, I hate this timeline so much.
Cutting off intelligence sharing with Ukraine and purchasing diesel from Putin would be the “beyond rhetoric” moves here.
These are desperate acts from an administration that doesn’t know what to do about Iran.
Russia’s support for Iran has paid off bigly.
A key political worry here (beyond day-to-day affordability for most folks) is that the only face-saving measure available to GOP faced with skyrocketing $$$ is to blame Ukraine for attacking Russian oil.
It could ugly if it moves beyond rhetoric and grandstanding. Hopefully, there won’t be time.
If reports of an end to intelligence sharing and Starlink access limits are confirmed, then the Trump admin has started helping Russia’s war effort. This a more harmful act against Ukraine than all the silly Witkoff/Kushner plans/trips put together. The US is trying to force Ukraine to surrender.
Does Saudi offer a plausible reason for not wanting the AP? Yeah, I know an unspoken reason is that it would be inconvenient (and cost more) to start a weapons program undetected.
But, no one has addressed the AP implementation tradeoffs that might create other burdens.
So, are there any?
“Our work doesn’t include all of agents’ problematic interactions with citizens. We didn’t count incidents where, say, an agent shot but didn’t detain a citizen. And as with the tally we did last year, the new list is an undercount.”
NEW FROM PP
The Trump admin keeps denying immigration agents are grabbing Americans, so we tracked it
500+ Americans detained
70+ kids, some cuffed or zip-tied
60+ held after filming
36+ held for day+ w/o access to lawyer
~12 deported (yes, deported)

General Matter submitted its license application to the NRC for a mysterious uranium enrichment plant in #Kentucky. In the publicly available environmental report, projected worker and public radiation doses are redacted as "trade secrets." Ridiculous. www.nrc.gov/docs/ML2627/...
Scant details. This could be a one time thing (and/or) a complete cluster.
Really unclear how fire marshals will feel about: “free and open to anyone who can get themselves in the building.” (Reader, it is not unclear in the slightest.)
Mark your calendars: Nov. 6-7 Nashville, TN
Hey heads up, if you're presenting at @4sweb.bsky.social Toronto, in case you haven't heard yet: you probably want to go check the XCDSYSTEM live page to make sure your day/time hasn't changed. I was warned earlier this is a thing that has happened to some people, and come to find out People Is Me.…
I'm going, also first time at 4S (and at an STS conference). A colleague and I at @thegraduatecenter.bsky.social are presenting on this panel on 10/9 at 3:40pm. Happy to chat!
I narrowly avoided being a first-gen college student when my mom finished her B.A. when I was a kid.
I also remember nervously slipping into my Appalachian dialect roots while speaking to Philosophy Dept Head and he corrected: “I ‘have’ seen… you’d wouldn’t want to go around saying ‘I seen it.’”
TFW someone wants to be the voice of Pragmatism but can’t accept that ideas/words/names have real world impacts.
Maybe think about it in terms of responsibility? Commonly, adults are held responsible for the actions of children. If we frame AI as superior intellect, creators might be unaccountable.
So again, when I hear "but AI is not smarter, that's the point," I have to wonder: what is that singular point?
I'll put it to you this way: what if everybody in the world agrees that AI is not "smarter" than humans?
Does that mean we're done with the discussion about the implications of AI tech
I’ve now lived so much longer than I would ever have expected to that I feel I’m living in the future. This is when I imagined Neuromancer happening. And now the creators of today’s AI warn us that it threatens humanity.
Jane Darby Menton’s sober take on what we know, what we don’t know, and what Congress should make their businesses to find out about the US-Saudi deal.
Concise and thorough.

At least two obnoxious “both sides” accounts are harping on Ossoff/Warnock back in 2021… which was also a Trump proposal: “pitch to approve $2,000 stimulus payments to Americans, a popular issue backed by Democrats and President Donald Trump but opposed by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell”
Trump: "If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate...I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000."
This was at height (or one of the heights) of the pandemic and there was bipartisan support to provide cash payments to keep families afloat. This is not in the same ballpark.
If $5K checks are a good idea POTUS should support w/o condition. Ossoff/Warnock had to be elected first to vote on it.
I love the framing of this assignment. Implicit in the design (as most thoughtfully designed college courses) is that there is no pre-determined student outcome. The only failure case would be a student who resists considering the complexity of meanings and motivations.
Yeah, complete non-sequitur “We had other buildings… United States Steel building was creaking, really creaking…”
Seems like he just started talking about another building where he was the VIP being protected and maybe not even something that occurred on 9/11. Unclear ramblings.
I love Aaron. But this seemed unusually important, so I watched the speech until I got to this part. He says he was lifted out of the US Steel building because it was creaking and people thought it would fall down, NOT that he was lifted from the rubble on 9/11.
It’s like half the world is enrolled in a undergrad Philosophy of Mind course, and we’ve gotta listen to the same people chime in over and over during the lectures to pretend like they’ve done the reading.
Unsurprisingly, nothing was accomplished by the Steve and Jared show.
About trilateral talks: "Everyone was speaking in Russian to each other. We were discussing these issues in a very extra-friendly manner, all in Russian." And you, Jared, were you speaking or listening in Russian?
Good books are good on their own terms, but for those who might need the motivation to start @mattdinniman.bsky.social’s Dungeon Crawler Carl series it is everything that we hoped/pretended that Ready Player One was. And I’m only on Book 3. I’m consistently amazed at the ambition and delivery.
