This is an excellent article - I have some additional thoughts from a feminist perspective on the consequences of this Supreme Court judgment, rather than just my legal ones: Thread 🧵

The UK Supreme Court’s transphobic ruling on the definition of woman last week is a defeat for all women—even, ultimately, the self-described feminists celebrating it, and the women who will gain in the short term from their alliance with the carceral state. my latest for @thenation.com

Grandaughter (15mo) has her bilateral nephrectomy next week. Her kidneys have zero function & her condition, WT1 glomerulonephropathy has a high risk of kidney cancer. She's on dialysis and we're hoping for a transplant when she's big enough.

The only thing is I wish ppl didn't assume that every case of kidney failure is preventable, or that every case is caused by diabetes or poor diet. And I wish I didn't get unsolicited 'advice' from ppl who are oblivious of rare, potential fatal genetic conditions. Thanks to the NHS she has a future

Women in the UK face being banned from female toilets and other spaces. This is a disgusting assault on human rights and female dignity. Share if you agree!!

1990's: Thank you for coming to this race to provide more telescopes nationwide! Yes, everyone is sweaty and glad to have helped w/ fundraising for telescopes. Now: I dunno why you think there are more stars out there than we initially predicted. You're wrong bc It's different than I expected.

Staple this to RFK Jr’s forehead.

So far I’ve learned that Trump regime wants to stop repairing roads, food safety inspections, all environmental protections, affordable healthcare, scientific research, public schooling, vaccinations (?), due process, imported goods, all visitors to USA, reproductive healthcare & universal suffrage

One thing I wish people understood about authoritarianism is life often looks more or less the same. Troops aren’t marching down the street every day; people go to restaurants, have their office jobs. But everyone knows that stepping out of line, even slightly, can derail your life with no recourse

#NephSky Well, I'm a fully trained grandma! My 1yo granddaughter has kidney failure and I'm now qualified in delivering her home peritoneal dialysis and the PEG feeding. This means I get to look after her for the whole weekend. I'm absolutely terrified but her parents so need some time off

I strongly doubt the rest of the planet's 7 billion citizens are going to tolerate allowing one insane grandpa to do this to all of them for much longer.

(1/3) It needs repeating: in 1994, Ukraine was persuaded to give up its nuclear weapons to Russia in return for the US, the UK, and Russia guaranteeing Ukraine’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity.

"A democracy is no more than an aristocracy of orators. The people are so readily moved by demagogues that control must be exercised by the government over speech and press." ~ Thomas Hobbes

Watching from UK, I'm so sad for USA. You are under attack as surely as if you'd been carpet bombed, but the buildings remain undamaged. In the 17th Century, Hobbes wrote that without proper government the "lives of men are poor, brutish and short". Trump is not ruling, he's destroying rule.
