I keep asking myself: “How did we get so mind numbingly stupid enough to elect people who would be fascists?” And it all comes back to education. We started teaching to the test, stopped teaching civics, stopped valuing the arts and independent thought. We started teaching people to be profitable.

Here’s something you should know about minks: They have lungs and airways remarkably similar on a cellular level to those of people. They’ve spread flus and infected humans before with COVID-19. Right now, bird flu is spreading on a Utah farm filled with thousands of them… 🧵

You might cry. You might want to take up Go. Possibly both. Only one way to find out.

I usually check out as many games as possible in Next Fest, but the tidal wave of AI trash has beaten me Non-AI indie devs please post your games below and I'll check em out instead Also @steampowered.com PLEASE add an option to filter out AI games in searches. It's killing discoverability #gaming

Excited to see a beautiful male Eastern Tiger Swallowtail this week. By far, this is latest in the year that I have seen a Tiger since I started my butterfly journey in 2020. I hadn’t see one past September. #Photography99 📷 #MeadowStrolling 🌱 #BloomScrolling 🌻 #Butterflies 🦋 #Swallowtails

I'm sure that when I looked at the linked shop this morning, there weren't nearly as many "Out of stock" notices... Hooray for a person selling cool stuff getting suddenly popular, but I'm gonna have to try to remember to check in a month or two once the internet moved on.

Okay, I really need to sleep now, but I will leave you with this PSA: The Next Fest page is good now. I spent three hours and found *fifty* games you can play NOW, that I had never heard of before, and all look cool. Many look very weird. The only AI use is a couple that use machine translation.

Okay, now the Next Fest page is set to Personalized by default, it's giving me some REAL sicko stuff (positive, laudatory even), like... RUIN: 35th ANNIVERSARY DEFINITIVE EDITION A remaster of a game that never existed.

But really, this article is the most Grauniard ragebait article ever (affectionate) - and yeah, it worked on me. As if it's possible to rank Cohen's songs...

In fact I got to have a nice little music snob smug moment when I saw Shrek (in the theatre, yes I'm old) - when the piano started playing I went "Oh hey, that's John Cale."

Much later I realised that that was actually a sort of unintentional tribute to my friend Trevor, who when I showed him "Pump Up The Volume" went "Oh hey, that's Leonard Cohen," which finally let me identify what that cool song in the movie was, and started my ongoing love for Cohen's ouvre.

Cohen is of course one of those artists whose originals are quite often overshadowed by their covers. Like maybe half of the album "I'm Your Fan", but especially Jean-Louis Murat's take on Avalanche and of course John Cale's version of Hallelujah.

I would argue that the original article's assertion that Shrek made "Hallelujah" famous isn't really right. It was already a well known song for people to cover for years before that, esp. thanks to Jeff Buckley's unique rendition - the only other cover that stands up to Cale's for my money.

He introduced "If It Be Your Will" as "a prayer" then stepped back and we got a sublime version of it from his long-time collaborators Sharon Robinson and the Webb sisters. There was also the otherworldy experience of the entire stadium quietly singing along to The Partisan in French.

I'll accept that my preference for "Waiting for the Miracle" over "The Future" is subjective, but not including either "The Partisan" or "If It Be Your Will" is a travesty - a travesty, I tell you! Of course it's all just opinions, and there are so, so many good songs.

It's pretty close, but I think "If It Be Your Will" is just ahead of "Famous Blue Raincoat" for my number 1. When I saw Cohen in Toulouse during his epic '08-'10 tour, these two songs were back to back in the second encore. www.setlist.fm/setlist/leon...

Video of a regent parrot mum leaving her nest after feeding the kids - old river red gums are critical habitat for these birds but they’re under threat from logging and water stress

Same for the companion couch-surfing website. We put up a dude for the night who was rollerblading from Bordeaux to Toulouse along the canal footpaths. First time I ever saw marathon rollerblades.

it's hard to describe to young folks how cool airbnb was when it first launched. just weirdos and spare rooms for like twenty bucks. we stayed at a guy's house in oregon who was a "bear safety expert" and when we asked him what to do if a bear attacked you he replied, completely seriously "i dunno."

Seconding the 'please, if you have room and inclination, adopt' because what if you DO adopt some little creecher and you're like "I have never had a cat before, he is very cute but what do I do with him" and he's like "YOU DO THIS" for a solid month (Photo from July 2022)
