Today is the official release date for my new book, First Among Equals: Visions of Equality before Egalitarianism. It explores how and why “equality” became, rather suddenly, a basis on which ordinary men and women could make political demands in early modern England. Please, check it out!

Yesterday the book was launched with an Oxford New Book" panel discussion at Oriel, where one of the discussants was Jordan Walters, RGCS Philosophy PhD '25, now a postdoc at Oxford. Also in attendance: RGCS Taylor Fellow alum Amelia Kemp BA '26, now an MPhil student in political theory at Oxford.

Though I would note that the Reasons was both pro and con the toleration of Catholics (though obviously coming down rather heavier on the con - and then prompting the Essay on Toleration to elaborate as much).

Very interesting framing of Locke on toleration - and its relevance to contemporary debates on liberalism by @tmbejan.bsky.social. #philsky #polsky

I wrote about Locke, the liberal establishment, and the role of universities for Persuasion, here: open.substack.com/pub/persuasi... Come for Guy Verhoefstadt's Locke tweets, stay for the (unsung) significance of William Popple for so-called "Lockean" toleration...

Very interesting article - can't wait for Tim's volume On the Nature of Churches to flesh out Locke's views on tolerance and the established church in more detail.

Hugely excited to see our edited volume with OUP now out in the world! The Political Thought of John Locke: New Perspectives, co-edited with the indefatigable @davidrarmitage.bsky.social and Felix Waldmann. academic.oup.com/book/63006

With many thanks to our contributors, and especially my co-author Connor Grubaugh, and our invaluable research assistant Baltazar Dydensborg. (I’m also greatly indebted to David and Felix for doing very much more than the lion’s share in bringing it to press as I was finalizing my monograph).

Thank you, Musa!

And for folks interested in the broad themes explored in this series, I'd recommend a forthcoming book by @tmbejan.bsky.social with @harvardpress.bsky.social: First Among Equals. More here on that book here: musaalgharbi.substack.com/i/202717521/...

New book alert🚨 Geertje Bol's Partisan Virtue is out online! The book offers a timely defence of partisanship by turning to two 18th century women—Astell &Macaulay—for whom parties were a vehicle for political participation. So excited to dig into this! academic.oup.com/book/62949

An honor and a pleasure to engage with such an excellent group of political theorists and philosophers—thanks for having me!

Jonathan Floyd@jonathanfloyd.bsky.social

After a marvellous lecture yesterday from @tmbejan.bsky.social on equality (before egalitarianism) we had this morning a fascinating talk on Locke (before liberalism) to our usual talk-and-bake group. Both occasions marked by rich insight & conversation and for that we are very grateful indeed 😁
