Some 6 years after this paper was conceived, many online workshops, long discussions and a really community effort right to the end, it is now out in @newphyt.bsky.social Of course this talks the talk, but there is a road still to walk :-)

Towards a global understanding of tree mortality - out in @newphyt.bsky.social a collaboration between 113 of our members exploring the potential to better understand tree death globally nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

This was not an inevitability. This is the result of decades of political choices that rig the system in favor of the wealthy and powerful while leaving workers behind. It does not have to be this way.

The article outlines specific benchmarking variables that can already be used to improve predictions of forest responses to environmental change. As well as data very much needed.

In short: The models could capture all the key features of forest development but would benefit from broader calibration of tree growth and mortality rates. We also need to look more closely at postdisturbance establishment.
