Post-doctoral fellow in global forest dynamics: closing date 2nd November

ForestPlots@forestplots.bsky.social

Post-doctoral fellow in global forest dynamics! TreeChange combines life history traits from field observations with demographic modelling to understand the future of forests and the carbon sink. Based at Lund in Sweden you will work with researchers across the world lu.varbi.com/what:job/job...

In Vietnamese logged forests, increasing heat is associated with productivity declines and a lost carbon sink.

Amy Bennett@amybenno.bsky.social

In Khe Nuoc Trong increasing maximum temperatures are associated with reduced carbon gains. And productivity has declined over time, suggesting that warming may already be constraining forest recovery.

The recovery rates we observe are significantly lower than widely used reference levels and rates reported in comparable forests.

Columbus Day is the most Republican holiday because it's about giving a white man credit for discovering a country he never actually set foot in and where people were already living.

2026 as a whole is now on track to end up roughly tied with 2024 as the warmest year on record in ERA5, at 1.6C above preindustrial. And 2027 waiting in the wings to be quite a bit warmer on the back of a record-setting El Nino event.

Bordeaux, France, has now recorded more days above 40°C in 2026 alone than during the entire 105-year period from 1920 (when observations began) to 2025. This is deeply shocking.

"Long-term datasets are crucial to tracking endogenous and exogenous changes to forest development in the global change era." Here is an amazing one from a temperate rainforest: reporting 72 years, mostly near-stasis and then more rapid climate-driven change.

For years I've been told that aviation emissions are negligible, so don't worry your little head about them. But I've kept pointing out that there are - and will be - no good technical solutions, and they'll keep growing. Now we know just how big the problem is. www.carbonbrief.org/ccc-heathrow...

I have a new piece out in Nature today on the record-breaking 2026/2027 El Niño, what impacts we should expect, and how governments can prepare. The Niño3.4 region is currently running more than 1C hotter than any prior event on record, and we remain months away from the peak www.nature.com/artic...

Now tell me again why we shouldn’t act on climate change… The current, record El Niño could contribute to 451,000 additional heat-related deaths over the next six months. El Niño is natural. The increasingly dangerous heat baseline we’re experiencing is not. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

“Galea’s research, which is yet to be peer reviewed, found that the greater the background noise, the less likely gibbons were to call. The group living close to the highway called in 36% of recordings – far less than the seaside group (71.4%), and the hiking trail group (84.6%).”

It’s WHAT we eat (beef especially) that matters for climate. Not so much WHERE it is grown.

Emily Cassidy@enviroem.bsky.social

People are always surprised to learn that packaging, processing, and transportation are almost always small contributors (<10%) of food-related GHG emissions. The TYPE of food we eat -- meat versus plants -- is a MUCH bigger factor.
