I am looking for work! Clojure, or, maybe, something native, closer to the metal. RT for reach please 🙏 https://tonsky.me/blog/work-2026/

tonsky.meLooking for workHey, Niki here. This is a bit unusual. My sabbatical is coming to an end, and I am looking for a new opportunity. Full-time or contract, startup or research, remote or Berlin, individual contributor, ideally—tight team, ambitious product. I am a software engineer first and foremost with 20+ years of experience. I work on technically challenging products, foundational technology, dev tools. I’ve been doing Clojure and web recently, but I'm also very excited to explore closer-to-the-metal programming. I have an eye for design, user interfaces, UX, DX. I would love to work with a team that takes interface quality seriously. Or to work with graphics! I am pretty sure I am good at explaining stuff, including what we are building, why, why this way, why is it important, etc. For example. The overarching theme is to understand computers deeply, and then use that to make better and simpler software. If you care about that too, we might be a great match! # Recent work Instant DB is a US startup building a modern Firebase. I worked on the sync algorithm, performance, DX. A summary of my commit log. Roam Research is an OG personal knowledge manager. I worked on database optimization and a plugin system. At JetBrains, I developed a new Skia renderer for Fleet and Jetpack Compose Desktop. I’ve built many open-source libraries, including a database, a GUI toolkit, a Clojure dev environment, a React wrapper, a well-known font... More recently, Clojure+ gives you a taste of my approach to DX, and Fast EDN—to performance. I maintain several active projects — AlleKinos.de, Grumpy Website, this site. If you want to dive deeper, here’s the usual stuff: Projects / Talks / LinkedIn / GitHub # Why this post? It’s an attempt to reach beyond my immediate network. I’ve been doing Clojure for a long time, and now want to explore. If you are working on a compiler, a database, an IDE, a programming language or another technically ambitious product, touching graphics, typography, algorithms, low-level programming, and you think my experience can help, let’s talk: niki@tonsky.me.

Roma, head of design of Evil Martians, is looking for his next gig. We know each other for a long time, had endless discussions about font design, he is very meticulous, detail-oriented and with great taste. Martian Mono (his font) has been my daily driver for a while. Can’t recommend him enough!

I’ve announced my departure from Evil Martians. I can’t express how grateful I am for 11 incredible years ❤️ But I’m excited for the next adventure. I’m open to roles in product ownership, design engineering, or design leadership. Let’s chat if something comes to mind!

Excited to announce the official launch of our online book, WebAssembly from the Ground Up! 🎉 It's the book we wish we'd had 3 years ago. No messing with tools and frameworks. It's a hands-on guide to the core of Wasm: the instruction set and module format. Link below. 👇

AI has revolutionized my workflow! Thanks to Google being garbage and LLMs generating random bullshit I get to read official docs and original open source code more often. 👍

Terminals or at least "ttys" are not modern. They are a chimera merging disparate properties of VGA, HDLC, and good old teletypes. I know I'm in the minority and always have been, but to me they are an anchor holding us back in our tech lives. Your phone does not have a terminal.

what's involved in getting a "modern" terminal setup? jvns.ca/blog/2025/01...

Stop saying that one programming language is better than another. It all depends what you want to do. When you want to fight with a borrow checker, use Rust. When you want to guess which esoteric tsconfig some lib requires, try TypeScript. When you feel like yelling at a package manager, do Python.

I once heard Douglas Adams say in an interview that "Technology" is what we call the stuff that doesn't work. At some point electric lights and refrigerators were the height of tech. When they didn't quite work. Now with IOT they are back to being tech and, well, let's hope the WiFi is working...

My biggest frustration with iPhone has to be that somehow app developers get to chose what text the user can select and copy. So much wasted time screenshotting just so the phone can OCR its own text...

And why is CI broken now? For the HTTP Toolkit desktop app build, seriously 99% of the time, this is the answer:
