What do people mistakenly say/print for “brass tacks?”

Merriam-Webster@merriam-webster.com

We acknowledge that no one has the bandwidth for this, but if it helps: -It’s ‘sleight of hand’ -It’s ‘bated breath’ -It’s ‘lo and behold’ -It's 'buck naked' -It’s ‘brass tacks’ -It’s ‘free rein’ -It’s ‘toe the line'

Welp, I’m stuck… Not sure my body will decompose fast enough for my family to set my skeleton out for Halloween tho.

"Debate" has been corrupted by codifying it into a competitive sport imo; at this point it is rarely a method for good faith actors to hit upon best solutions or refine a shared reality; it's mostly a vector for bad faith actors to keep failed and destructive ideas in perpetual zombie currency.

Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò@olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social

it's understandable to think of constructive debate as an ideal and then to figure that *any* debate is therefore a step towards political values and virtues. but I think most debates, particularly in the social media age, make conversations and outlooks worse than where they started

Picturesque sky/clouds to complement the fall colors on the trees this morning… (phone camera no match for the reality.)

I inherited my Dad’s digital life when he died, and it was infuriating to see how much the avalanche of constant, crosslinked spam mails and texts disabled his ability to use those to communicate with people who mattered to him through those channels.

Adam Bonica@adambonica.bsky.social

Once mass spam texts were made legal, younger donors vanished, leaving a grassroots fundraising machine that subsists on squeezing vulnerable seniors, some of whom give hundreds of times a day. It’s a horrific model. Consultants get generationally wealthy, and the party hollows out its future.

I have refused to use the term “Somali gangs” despite tremendous pressure. Why? It’s a political narrative, not an accurate descriptor of gun violence, even if it was committed by a Somali youth. Who is driving this narrative? Republicans, the Strib, and police. Brilliant reporting below.

mollypeonies@mollypeonies.bsky.social

DEEP DIVE is up! How the Star Tribune turned Republican “Somali gangs” rhetoric into an election-year crime narrative—and helped give demands for expanded local, state, and federal enforcement the authority of news.

Tbh, Adam Serwer wrote an essay (& subsequently published a book) whose title explained it quite concisely.

1,000 years from now, teachers will struggle to explain to their students how at this time in history, we found literally the most despicable human being in America and made him the most powerful person in the world

RFK is personally responsible for a measles outbreak killing American kids. Stephen Miller has killed more undocumented people than we will know until his tribunal. Pete Hegseth is nerfing anyone in a skiff within 95 miles of Cuba. They get away with it because they are committed to the performance.

Anyway, good case study here. You can be as evil as you want, you can kill as many people as is possible, you can shove churro ladies into vans then off to black sites in countries they've never even heard of, but if you can't do the performance of fascism — that's when you're in real trouble.

I'm just gonna bookmark this for future reference when Dem pundits complain about how the party has trouble communicating its message to voters. The reason you keep running into trouble with your branding isn't campus radicals. The reason is that your opponents purchased all the media outlets.

For no particular thought-out reason… “Cocoa butter on a very ashy day, fam/Ray-Bans out on the islands of Cay-man” …is one of my favorite DOOM couplets.

The truth was that if United Health had an AI that was accepting a shitload of claims with a 90% error rate, United Health would stop using the AI in about 0.2 seconds.

The AI industry wants you to say "the AI just did that thing on its own!" Like, United Health's AI that's denying a shitload of claims with a 90% error rate? They wanted you to think it's just the AI.

i simply cannot imagine the level of delusion and sheer ignorance it takes to believe that the rise of Republican Nazis is some outside imposition and not something that has come from within the American right.

I just cannot fathom--in the year 2026--being a senior reporter and ascribing, umm, *policy goals*, to Trump. Really? Like: look at you, where's the switch that shut off your brain? I mean, it was patently ridiculous the first time, already, but now? My man, sheesh...

The technology isn’t the backbone of the economy. The massive amounts of money circulating between a handful of companies and people while weaving through the stock and bond markets is the backbone of the economy.

I have this vaguely-formed memory of some film/tv show/tv episode where there were pod people or clones or aliens masquerading as humans and the visual tell was that they would spew some gooey slop from their mouths. Same feel here.

I see the NYT is still platforming 'dei crushed white men' bullsh*t. Here it's buried in a 'why rural themed pop culture' is so popular in a piece written by a Princeton grad who lives in New York City. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/13/o...

"OK, so these models need ridiculous amounts of compute" "Sounds expensive" "Yes, we're spending trillions to build data centers" "Cool, cool, what are the plans to make a return there?" "TBD, oh and by the way we're working on making these models more compute efficient" "So, fewer DCs?" "No."

"Hennepin County is ready for a new direction"?! Prior to Mary Moriarty, Mike Freeman held this office for nearly three decades, from 1991–99 and 2007–2023, with Amy Klobuchar (see: Myon Burrell, Marvin Haynes) in between. Moriarty IS the new direction, and we should keep going in that direction.

I feel this. Never shared a home with cats until I met my wife and her two cats and the base poverty of my life beforehand was revealed to me. 🐈

Just like the Germans did with the Berlin Wall. Hand out sledgehammers and let the people express how they feel about Trump’s monuments to himself.

It's not enough to just take this shit down in 2.5 years. We've gotta desecrate it. Flip it over and turn it into a halfpipe. Make the sides of it a dog park so something can piss and shit on it. It's the only way out of this. President AOC, I will make this happen free of charge.

so are we gonna get a bunch of political analysis thumbsucker pieces about the cautionary tale of a promising youngish politico who torpedoed his career by latching on to the biological gender extremists who are attempting to drag the Democratic Party into hugely unpopular political waters or nah

Start seeing: Family annihilation. Like those parents who kill all the kids, the spouse, burn the house down and get their parents first if they can before they commit suicide, family annihilators believe that if they suffer an ego wound the whole world must die. Start seeing it.
