β€œCyclists are often perceived as recklessly flaunting road laws. A new study challenges this perception. The study found only 5% of cyclists broke road rules while riding on bike infrastructure versus 66% of motorists who broke rules while driving.” Safe bike infrastructure fuels rule-following.

cyclingmagazine.caCyclists break road laws much less frequently than motorists - Canadian Cycling MagazineStudy finds 5 per cent of cyclists versus 66 per cent of drivers disobey road laws

Shout it from the rooftops!!

This video camera study showed that less than 5% of people on bikes broke traffic laws while riding bikes, yet 66% of people did so while driving. And perhaps even more importantly, if you REALLY want even MORE bike-riders to obey laws, build more protected bike infrastructure. Via @carltonreid.com

Traffic Safety Act & Regs are law from Monday, thread 1/ Vision Zero tells us actions by authorities have the most impact on road safety. The TSA does not establish a duty or framework for authorities to improve safety (compare Mexico) www.advocacyincubator.org/case-studies...

The new Nova Scotia Traffic Safety Act & Regulations is an improvement on the outdated MVA but gaps & contradictions remain that could threaten implementation, interpretation & impact. Read our media release & submission for our assessment from a #VisionZero lens #NSPoli

Anyone asking this question doesn’t understand, or doesn’t want the rest of us to understand, what property taxes are for. Obviously, your share of municipal infrastructure costs and services etc don’t end when you pay off your home. They’re as likely to rise as they are to drop. Obviously.

Politico@politico.com

β€œI’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. β€œWhy would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

This is an amazing multi-use trail in a Canadian city. It starts downtown at the ferry terminal and follows the waterfront towards neighbouring communities. Incredible, right? (thread) #bikeHFX

Now, believe it or not, these two incredible multi-use trails are seperated by three kms of very busy roadway that make even the most experienced cyclists wince and cross their fingers. What a lost opportunity to have a world class multi-use trail opportunity that this Canadian city could promote!

This is an amazing multi-use trail just outside a Canadian city. It starts on the edge of the city and winds its way to some of the most popular beaches in Nova Scotia. WOW, right? 2/3 #bikeHFX

Cyclists were often called β€œscorchers.” In the 1890's, β€œA new menace appeared in the streets: the β€˜scorcher’ or bicycle speed fiend, β€˜that idiot with head sunk between bent handle bars,’ body thrown forward and pedaling at top speed,” wrote Peter Salwen, author of (New York's) Upper West Side Story.

It's never been about the bike lanes. It's so much bigger than that. If it was *just* about bike lanes, the province would have jumped at the city's much less expensive proposal to add back a traffic lane and keep the bike lanes. But they rejected it. #Bill212

Doug Ford’s war on bike lanes isn’t about trafficβ€”it’s part of a global right-wing backlash to vilify urban residents and defend fossil fuel interests. @breachmedia.ca dove into the politics of cycling, and debunked some myths along the way www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoCz...

I have read a million explanations or guesses about why drivers hate bike riders. I always think about how and why so many people hate vegans. They have made a life choice that makes other people feel defensive and then mad even though it is personal, harmless, virtuous, even valuable to society.

Bell Helmets since Day 1!

Bicycles Recycle@bicyclesrecycle.bsky.social

In 1975, Bell Sports introduced the first commercially successful #bicycle helmet for bicyclists. That polystyrene-lined, hard shell head protection was called the "Bell Biker". MSR (Mountain Safety Research) had begun selling a bicycle helmet, an adaptation of their mountaineering helmet, in 1974.

It's simple and it's win-win.

I ride my bike everywhere because it's fast and convenient and saves me a lot of money. It's pro-social too, I'm not spewing exhaust in anyone's face and I use a very tiny fraction of the road infrastructure that cars do. It's a win win. How the F did cycling become such a cultural flashpoint?

Since I'm seeing lots of chatter about flu and Covid shots here's a PSA: You can have pneumonia for months and not be totally debillitated. Endured months of bacterial pneumonia and was repeatedly pushed off by our family Dr. It eventually came to a head, got antibiotics and it cleared in a week.

It's referred to as 'walking pneumonia' for a reason. You go in and out of moderate symptoms to more severe symptoms with generalized fatigue and getting worn down.
