As I've said before (see nested skeet), this purgation project means you should expect random reposts of stuff that could be months or years old. bsky.app/profile/twal... 4/

An aside: Please expect to see some random reposts of older stuff here. As part of my bigger digital cleanup project (see quoted item et seq.), I've been clearing out my Bluesky likes. I tend to use them as informal bookmarks & then forget about them for months, which isn't ideal. Spring cleaning!

In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

I live in a rural town and, like, I don't know how to tell you this, but the girls play on the boys team and vice versa all the time because otherwise we don't have enough players for a game and it's literally always fine so stop being weirdos about kids sports and just let trans kids play.

Anti-trans Democrats are spreading poison when we can least afford it, during elections in this ongoing fascist takeover. As a strategy, it’s a recipe for failure. As a moral stand, it’s reprehensible. PS I’m the father of young trans woman and I’ll never forgive anyone who makes her life harder.

I'm very close to being a single-issue voter, and that issue is whether you can treat every human being like a person with rights to peaceably live their life as they choose. It's a low bar, but I really wish more folks who aspire to leadership could clear it.

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

Is this a good time for me to explain my (admittedly unorthodox, possibly bananas) approach to sports loyalties? Maybe.

There was just a very loud crow yelling outside so for some reason I thought I should go and see what was up. I got what I can only describe as a 'wasn't talking to you' glare from a crow and went back inside.

Unsolicited niche gift recommendation for the holiday season: If you have any #jigsaw puzzle fans on your list, consider this fantastic puzzle from @nybooks.com — one of my all-time faves, and now one of my dear mother's all-time faves. shop.nybooks.com/products/par...

Reminds me tangentially of "Feynman problems" — the dozen or so research issues that Richard Feynman would keep fresh in his mind at any given time. He kept them fresh to do this kind 👇 of mulling & so that anytime he came across a new technique, he could try it out on his current problems to solve.

psa: The last bit of any project of any kind is worth spending extra time on. This is where people get frustrated or bored or wildly anxious to be done. But skimping is a mistake. If it's for a client, it'll leave a sour taste; if it's for yourself, you will always wish you'd made the effort.

Current example: Locally baked sourdough (lightly toasted) + German mustard + HEB turkey salad = good. Same sourdough + same mustard + same turkey salad + these boss pickled shallots I just made = GOOD.

Considering how much I like pickles (plenty), and how much I like to elevate sandwiches to higher levels (a point of pride), it's weird to me how long it's taken me to get into random quick-pickling of available produce in my kitchen.

There are people I like who are Man United fans. It's a club with a proud* tradition. Having said that, I do love to see Man U. take a beating. [ * and sometimes prideful ]

I wish I could step up and show my appreciation personally to people who write stories about how 'tragic' it is that actresses look older when they get older. No shit, man. That's how getting older works.

If we can get some TikTok influencers & Japanese teenagers — and maybe two Hollywood actresses (any combo of Hathaway, Robbie, and Zendaya, for preference), this witch-hat thing is ON.

Seconded — this is excellent analysis from @katz.theracket.news.

Brilliant piece @katz.theracket.news, a former @apnews.com correspondent in #Haiti, on why Papa Doc 1964 comes to mind when pondering #Trump plan to livestream execution. As Edwidge Danticat said, intended result was to terrify & show "caligula has the power to choose” theracket.news/p/trump-want...

I've been meaning to share this thread from some months ago about the NYT's wrongheaded approach to reporting trans issues. I found it compelling.

Billie Jean Sweeney@billiejsweeney.bsky.social

The 1st time the nyt leadership engaged me on trans issues, in 2021, they asked my opinion of a Jesse Singal review of a book by the transphobic writer Helen Joyce. The piece had been assigned by Pamela Paul 🧵

5. I don't have a strong opinion about whether consciousness can theoretically be created in software. But I do see no reason to ask that now about this technology, if we wouldn't about other software.

Good 🧵.

1. We don't know what consciousness is. Strictly speaking we don't know if consciousness - or, hell, anything - exists outside our own individual experience. Maybe rocks are conscious like you are. Maybe other humans aren't. Maybe neither rocks nor other humans exist. All possible!
