as a leftist i don’t believe patriotism for a settler colonial state but i have one (1) weak spot and it’s comedy bang bang mentioning canada. particularly if they name anything in saskatchewan or discuss CanCon regulations

you don’t hold "AI" accountable; you hold AI developers, vendors, and corporations that profit off it accountable holding "AI accountable" is like holding a toaster accountable. it's an inanimate object. it doesn't have wishes, feelings, or desires

Genuine question: How is what a government does in another country under the purview of the U.S. government? And if Maduro can be charged for this, does this not make a case for doing the same to Netanyahu or Putin?

The Washington Post@washingtonpost.com

The Justice Department charged deposed Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro and his wife with torturing prisoners, adding to the list of federal counts that the former South American leader and his inner circle are facing in New York. https://wapo.st/47OgYtn

never wondered something less in my life actually

In case you've been wondering about the viability of AI simulated surveys, Pew has offered in-depth reporting on their experiment with simulated survey participants. By Athena Chapekis, Arnold Lau, Samuel Bestvater, Sono Shah, Andrew Mercer, Aaron Smith www.pewresearch.org/data-labs/20...

whole reason to do the survey is to find out what people say??? why on earth would it make sense to do a “survey” with AI-generated “answers”?? that this is even an idea feels extremely perverse and revealing of the anti-human tendencies of current AI use

Quite a glass house for a country globally famous for torturing people that has an entire culture industry built around watching an action TV or movie star throw a ream of laws in the garbage can before waterboarding someone with an accent.

The New York Times@nytimes.com

Breaking News: The Justice Department announced new charges against the ousted Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, claiming they tortured U.S. citizens held in Venezuela.

feels like at least part of what is happening is that a lot of people want politics to solve the "my life feels empty" problem and the populist right is directly appealing to them

Put another way, to be legible enough for AI to be useful to most families, they would have to stop communicating as the family they have known, never had to overtly think about, and become something stranger and coarser that has no cultural foundation. Why would I do that?

Yes, the precondition for regular AI agent use is changing your culture to speak in middle America white bureaucratic language to make it work. You can’t put “the good collards“ on an optimized shopping list, much less account for what some call familect: www.nytimes.com/2026/09/03/m...

nytimes.comEvery Family Has Its Own Private Language. What Does That Tell Us About Ourselves? (Gift Article)“Familects” emerge out of in-jokes and mispronunciations, but they reveal something about how all language evolves.

It also seems designed with the idea that no one has a sense a humor. Pull a shopping list from the family group chat? Now you have to spend time finding the real stuff among all the requests for Doodoo Snax and Booger Beans.

and i think it's worth interrogating why the thing that would increase safety while putting a significant burden on cyclists is considered common-sense while the thing that would do the same for drivers is considered an absurd non-starter. way more motorists die every year than cyclists!

anti-helmet case is basically 1) helmet wearing reduces injury but in similar degree to wearing *while walking* does, which we would all agree is absurd 2) helmet mandates provably reduce cycling 3) safety-in-numbers is best cycling safety strategy so anything that reduces cycling increases danger

IMO @stevesalaita.bsky.social does *really* well in a Chronicle interview that feels very gotcha ("Confessions of a Campus Radical"). Below, facing a question designed to make him 'endorse' violence, he carefully indexes who is allowed to commit violence (Israel) and who isn't ("Hamas").

we need a robust set of public shaming practices for people doing this and we need it NOW and customers should start doing it when they notice workers being harassed like this

Mia Sato@miasato.bsky.social

I think I maybe undersold how gross the “prank” played on this employee was. Imagine you come into work, try to help customers, and later realize they've racked up 500,000+ views on social media by harassing you and your coworkers.

The problem with innovation as a reader is that the perfect technology has already been invented (book) and every subsequent innovation has the defect of being Not Book.

I have previously written about one reason that billionaires find the AI story so compelling: at root, many billionaires just don't believe most other people are actually, fully real. How could they? Achieving billionairehood requires that you inflict pain on vast numbers of people. 13/

To make things worse, AI *can't do the jobs* it's replacing: AI is predicated on the premise that monopolies, duopolies and cartels that control the global economy can deliberately worsen their products without suffering economic or regulatory consequences, because they're the only game in town. 4/

As an economic pathology, AI is *extraordinary*. AI boosters have spent a baffling and terrifying sum of money - over $1.4T, most of that in the past year - on the promise of making as many workers unemployed as possible, while lowering the wages of the meager survivors of this jobspocalypse. 3/

This is bone-chilling. A conservative hedge fund manager wants to require little girls to pass genital inspections for their “safety.” And it’s only for girls’ sports. There’s a clear link between transphobia and child sexual abuse.
