Some context around this, from a markets person. Historically in LatAm, leftist victories have led to sharp losses over the ~3 months after an election where the left wins. Stocks also typically underperformed into those victories. But 3y post-election, returns for leftists have been *higher*.

It's very, very telling, I think, that the markets are so concerned about the pro-democracy incumbent winning

If there is one thing progressives should learn from tonight (I’m looking at you Lewis) its that Canadian politics are not the same as American politics and maybe trying to emulate Chow instead of Mamdani is a better strategy going forward. Just a thought.

Did not expect it would ever feel world-historically important to share this pic of the newly-reelected mayor of Toronto, Olivia Chow, but these days it is. πŸ₯Ή

"Joel Riddle, who resigned as CEO of Polar LNG in September, told the Financial Times last week that he discovered Novatek was actually calling the shots and providing capital to the project without approval from the Treasury's OFAC or other agencies of the U.S. Administration."

"[T]he former Polar LNG employees say they are concerned about potential violations of the U.S. sanctions on Russia. While the U.S. has not sanctioned Novatek, it blacklisted in 2023 Novatek's Arctic LNG-2 project whose expansion has since stalled."

I highly recommend curating a large mute list so you don't waste time and energy spinning out about shit that doesn't matter

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

Oh hell yeah, this is amazing news! Vucic was Information Minister under Slobodan Milosovic and an ally of Viktor Orban

Phil Lewis@phillewis.bsky.social

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) β€” Serbia’s strongman leader Aleksandar Vucic has conceded defeat to a student-led movement in a seismic political shift.

Honestly very impressive that the Greens increased voter numbers by 13% in an election with historically low turnout.

Club Saanich@thesaanichdaily.bsky.social

Record low NDP voter turnout caused this. 275,000 fewer NDP votes. Congratulations to the #BCGreens the only party to actually gain votes. I never want to hear about "strategic voting" again. The NDP couldn't even be bothered to vote "strategically" for their own party. #bcpoli #cdnpoli

Ranked choice ballots would be such a simple and easy change

elcanaco.bsky.social@elcanaco.bsky.social

BC Greens got 11% of the vote and only 2 seats. If we had proportional representation, Greens would have 10 seats in the BC legislature. Our electoral system in BC in must change. #cdnpoli #bcpoli #vanpoli

As a journalist, I’ve covered the anti-trans movement in Canada for almost a decade at this point. There’s a lot of room for change from here. My advice tonight is that we all slow down, take a big breath, and ready ourselves for the actual fights to comeβ€”and don’t panic over the imaginary ones.

I appreciate passion and support from folks outside of B.C. But we actually don’t really know what happens next. And stoking necessary fear over hypotheticals is going to hurt the actual organizing that needs to happen to make things better for people here.

The Conservatives will end the night fairly close to the 900,000 or so votes they got in 2024. The NDP will go from just under 950,000 votes in 2024 to less than 700,000 this time. Turnout was down β€” but how much of it was demotivated 2017-2024 NDP voters who stayed home is a massive question.

And then the Russian company, presented with the evidence we had gathered, acknowledged in a statement: Yes, we are moving to take a large stake in the Polar LNG project in Alaska. Story was nailed. A bit hard to follow with all the names. But this is confirmation. Had not been previously disclosed.

"Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect." -Frank Wilhoit

I need people to understand this selective good ole boy justice β€” the kind that protects abusers, rewards impunity, and openly flouts rule of law and equal protection under it β€” is Jim Crow shit, practically speaking. It's how Jim Crow terrorism FLOURISHED. Trump broadened the acceptable targets.

Ah, the auto influencers have explained that this carbon fiber-wrapped ball, which sits right behind the driver's head, holds about 100kg of nitrogen pressurized to about 10,000 psi. Let me just go review the tolerances people found in their Cyber Trucks
