In Tesco looking for apples. Classic varieties available. Braeburn - New Zealand. Basically, no home-grown apple. In apple season. Britain. October 2026.

I suppose Microsoft and the like have to shed jobs. It might not be necessary or wise, operationally. But, from a marketing perspective, it’s essential if they are to convince their customers that they too can cut their labour costs. They’re caught in a trap. #wato

Farage not going to ‘cancel’ Reform members for liking Tommy Two-Names, unless he’s said something wrong. Nick lets him off the hook. Pretty much everything Tommy Two-Names posts is racist. Which means Farage is relaxed about racists. But we knew that anyway, didn’t we? #r4today

Yesterday Tice’s Reform budget (even though Jenrick is their Treasury spokesperson). Today, Farage on defending his Brexit legacy. #r4today really pushing the (small) boat out for them. Gonna need a bigger boat!

How did that interview about FOM fail to mention it meant UK cirizens would also gain FOM? It was presented entirely aa a cost, like higher taxes. #r4today

You're reporting for a British audience Sarah Smith. There's nothing "left-wing" about support for universal healthcare (unless you're a Reform/Restore nutter). #r4today

The achievement of Serbian students overthrowing Aleksandar Vučić can't be overstated. In 2024, they began protesting. In 2025, they transformed a protest movement into civil dissidence. In 2026, they became a political party — and two months later, crushed a corrupt state-entrenched authoritarian.

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...

Burnham now pondering freedom of movement out loud. I like the way he’s gradually nudging the country towards thinking the things we’ve been told are unthinkable. This is the sort of political leadership we’ve been missing for years. Have we left government-by-opinion-poll behind?

Melanie has secured a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, says the White House. On closer inspection, it appears it’s in one occupied area and for as long as it takes for the Ukrainian citizens to be ‘evacuated’ (aka expelled).

I have no idea where this place is. And no desire to look it up. Sounds like the population is a bit weird.

Trump v BBC trial date set for Feb. Odds-on Trump pulls the claim (albeit liable for the BBC’s costs). But when? Me: it’ll be immediately after the mid-terms. It’ll get lost in the noise and it might get struck-out on procedural grounds if Trump simply does nothing. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Wow! The Experiment on #C4 makes a nice change from the normal Benefits Street type welfare porn. Let’s see how it pans out.

TRUMP: We gave nothing in exchange for Stephen. We never give anything in exchange for hostages. TRUMP LITERALLY MOMENTS LATER: If I implemented sanctions on Russia, Steven wouldn't be coming out right now.

At #PMQs the PM hopes to remove standing charges on gas bills (but not electricity? No mention). Tho’ welcome as a cost of living measure, surely the incentives are all askew if they don’t deal with electricity charges? If boiler upgrade scheme goes as well, then even less incentive to electrify.

Although Reynolds makes a good point about finding the transition, it’s a bit late for that (not the current government’s fault). The N Sea has been in decline for years - a just transition was planned 5y ago. It hasn’t been delivered. #wato

Karl Marx: the contradictions of capitalism produce the conditions of its own downfall, creating a proletarian class that will emancipate itself from the class of capital and thus inherit the earth The class of capital: not if we torch the earth first, bitch

Farage on ITN says Reform racists are saying what working class people think. So it’s fine. He’s not a racist, he’s simply giving racists a voice. I’m sure “working class people” will be thrilled to have a public-schooled, Greenwoods-dressed, failed City trader as their self-appointed spokesman.

BBC just reported this on #wato. Wonder if they’ll scrutinise the rationale Odd that these announcements always blame tax, or the unions. Never poor strategic management, or even just making the wrong call in a competitive market.

If Burnham’s looking for some more low hanging fruit, he could legislate to make streaming services put a ‘first broadcast’ date on each programme. I’m looking at you, #bbc iPlayer! How am I supposed to remember which episode of which series I watched a few of a month ago?

Another example of a small, quick thing that costs nothing, but shows that government is on your side. Starmer went nowhere near this sort of thing, of course. And if he’d thought of it, the parking company lobby would have talked him out of it.

🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham has announced changes to car parking fines - Drivers will have a 5-minute grace period to decide whether to park and 10 minutes to leave after a parking session ends - A £20 maximum charge on appeal for minor mistakes, such as entering the wrong number plate

imagine being the one person in the world who pays a thousand pounds to meet Amol Rajan, and taking him back to your house that is covered in Joe Orton-style collages of Amol Rajan and showing him the tattoo of his face on your upper thigh and how unfair it will be when you also go to prison

Nick very determined to press for immediate cuts in benefits. Everyone he interviews explains why support has to come first. But still he tries. #r4today

And makes the common error of assuming that the Budget sets expenditure (eg ‘welfare’, defence, etc). It doesn’t - it raises revenue to support that expenditure. The fact that many commentators don’t really understand how government works is a problem.

Great explanation of monopoly capitalism through the Live Nation case study on #R5L now. They’ve wrecked the live music industry, basically.
