The most humbling part of our unionization campaign, and the layoffs that followed, was the support we received from workers in GameDev and beyond.
Ubi Hfx may be closed, but we’re still workers, and we'll keep paying it forward.
It's time for Game Workers to Unite!

Day 2 starting and the Ubisoft Workers of Montreal already collected 300+ signatures for their “Preserve Hybrid Work” petition! Most of the signatures were collected in person, so if you’re a Ubi employee, go meet your colleagues during break hours! Not an employee? Share this post to show support.
Today marks the public launch of the Ubisoft Workers of Montreal (UWM) campaign, with a first action: a petition to preserve hybrid work. Every Ubisoft Montreal employee is invited to sign the petition and every supporter encouraged to reach out to their network to encourage them to sign!

We learned a lot in our short time, and one of those lessons was "Don't trust the company knows what you're entitled to in severance."
Go get 'em @bethesdaunion.bsky.social!

Bethesda Games Studios’ Montreal workers are being treated especially poorly by XBOX and we won’t stand for it. Here are the details.
If this upsets you let Microsoft know: feedbackportal.microsoft.com/feedback/ide...
The big Game Studios are fighting unionization tooth and nail, when in the end unionization is a direct result of the condition they've brought the industry to.
Our leaders failed to be responsible stewards of our industry, so the workers are finding ways to address these problems ourselves.

Most GameDevs leave the industry after 5-6 years. AAA games take 5+ years to make.
This means most Devs in AAA games have never been there for a game's full dev cycle. Meaning most JRs are learning from mentors that haven't experienced it all.
That's an institutional problem.
#GameDev
The timing of this kind of press is intentional. How are they going to make these games when Bethesda and Obsidian collectively laid off hundreds? Don’t fall for it.
NEW: Bethesda has announced a slew of new Fallout games, including Fallout 5 and Fallout 3 + New Vegas remasters. The company also confirmed my scoop last week that it is working with Obsidian on a Fallout game.
I spoke to Todd Howard about the roadmap: www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
Microsoft's handling of layoffs of @bethesdaunion.bsky.social members sounds familiar.
Workers have rights and so long as we sit by and let them be trampled, game developers will continue to be exploited. And make no mistake, this is a form of exploitation.

In honour of Assassin's Creed Black Flag releasing we'd like to share a cool fact!
Did you know that #Pirates operated as democracies with a kind or proto-union structure? Quartermasters were elected reps for the crew and daily ops decisions were often done by vote.

The bosses are stealing our game industry, and we aim to take it back! We’re calling game workers, allies, and fans alike to join emergency rallies on WEDNESDAY, JULY 15th!

🇬🇧🪟📝📢 At least 3200 Xbox workers are being fired at Xbox. Together, the Xbox studios’ unions publish their list of demands on Microsoft’s plateform Player Voice.
We need your help and your vote to force management to address them : feedbackportal.micro...
Those of us in Rockville were inspired by the Dallas team's vigil for those let go Monday and made our own Celebration of Service. We set it up this morning in the common area of the first floor at 9am today.
Xbox spent a decade buying studios.
Now it's closing them.
Compulsion, Double Fine, and Ninja Theory are reportedly on the chopping block — the artsier end of a $69B Activision deal that returned just a 3% margin.
One of our members is working to help his hometown secure control over its own community hall.
Its not our typical share, but its still people helping people. Consider taking a few minutes to check it out!
My hometown is struggling to get control of their community hall and are looking for help. If you can take 5 minutes to checkout out their story, I'd really appreciate it!

When it comes to "speeding up development" there are only a few options: Reduce scope, increase workload (overtime), or increase headcount. XBox already stated plans for layoffs, and Bethesda's games are known for their size sooooo...

Nothing like telling anyone except the employees that they're about to lose their jobs.
The argument is that the company doesn't want employees finding out via journalists. Instead they get to hear it from their colleagues and social networks, because the company sure ain't gonna be on top of it.
These kinds of efforts are the result of, you guessed it: labor! So do you live in the US or Canada and want to get involved to help make more efforts like this a reality?
Check out how! 👇

They'll say, "Now isn't the right time to #unionize." But it's always the right time for worker #solidarity.
They said unionizing put the nail in Hfx's coffin. #Ubisoft says it didn't. Regardless, being unionized meant we had tools to stand up for ourselves instead of facing them alone. ✊

IGN Entertainment is refusing to pay its workers the wages we deserve, even as we make #IGNLive the event that it is this weekend.
So we left a message that can’t be ignored. And you should too. Let our upper management know that you support us by sending them an email here: bit.ly/4e2uUCP
We've posted before but now it's official: say hello to Phantom Rowboat! 🛶
The newest indie studio in Nova Scotia comes out of the aftermath of the #Ubisoft#Halifax closure. Time to start building something of our own.

"with a much greater degree of flexibility than a typically rigid union contract"
The contract is only as rigid as you negotiate it. If workers want flexibility, then build it into the agreement and make it formal!

This is a great overview of some more union facts
aflcio.org/formaunion/c...
Remember, unions are ultimately about workers supporting each other. It's that simple.
#solidarity#unionfact#gwu
"We believe your voice is strongest when it is heard directly. Not through a third party."
Who says you need to communicate through a third party? Honestly, if both sides are doing what they're supposed to, union reps should almost never be involved.
#unionfact#gameworkers
"If employees choose union representation, the CWA will serve as the employees' representative in collective bargaining with the Company"
It's handy that CWA has experts in bargaining to provide support, but it's actually your co-workers and elected reps that sit on the other side of that table.
For those unfamiliar this is what we're talking about:
www.gamesindustry.biz/wizards-of-t...
And we'd love to take a moment to debunk some #union#myths
The fight goes on. Game development will unionize, it’s natural once you look at the industry’s history.
For years, companies have pushed past the bounds of the social contract. What’s changing now is simple: more workers are choosing to stand their ground instead of walking away.
#solidarity#GWU
WotC declined to voluntarily recognize our union by Friday, May 1st. While we're disappointed in this delay, together we remain strong in our convictions. We look forward to sitting down at the bargaining table so we can make Arena better for workers, for Wizards, and for our players.

There is a reason Unions became a thing. It's the same reasons they are still a thing.
Unions work.
They are not easy. They are rarely perfect. But they give workers power and options that they don't otherwise have, and that's a good thing.
#unions#gwu#solidarity
#Ubisoft tells the AC Rebellion community that Live Ops continues with a new team in Paris.
Work that was being done by #Halifax didn’t disappear, it moved.
When a studio unionizes and the work relocates elsewhere, it deserves scrutiny.

While this is frustrating, we do want to wish the new team the best of luck. Picking up an existing game is tough, especially when the original team is gone.
We hope players will be patient as things get going and that they get to experience the features we thought would never see the light of day.
