Our attempt to adapt a bit of Unflattening was incredibly challenging. As I was writing description for this pg, I was like, no one can keep track of where on the page they are. So I made a tactile diagram to accompany the description. Did it work? Sort of. Needs more refining & attempts.
Pleased to see conversations on alt-text here. Sharing page from Unflattening & the tactile diagram I made to accompany the description I wrote to aid in navigation. I always tell parents that itβs not the amount of screen time they need to worry about, itβs the quality of it. Playing games with friends online for a few hours is VERY different than doomscrolling social media.
Screens are infrastructure. For neurodivergent and disabled people, they're assistive devices, regulation tools, community spaces, lifelines. The "screen time" panic gets it backwards.

The Safari team's reason for opposing Web MCP struck a cord with me. It is something I've struggled to articulate in the past. In fact, their comments contain the seed of a design principle that the W3C should adopt.

People have personal preferences on what they consider acceptable length for alt text, but there's no definitive character limit or formula for how long alt text should be. That said, aim to be as detailed as needed but as succinct as possible. Go for both accuracy and precision.
Educators -
Don't post photos of destroyed classrooms or messes made during a childβs worst, most dysregulated moments. It doesn't bring "awareness"
Those photos donβt tell the story of trauma, unmet needs, communication barriers or a nervous system in crisis
