So much this! You turn 65 and all of a sudden you get fucking bombarded with relentless crap - to the point I almost deleted a legit heath provider message cos I assumed it was the bajillionth scam text of the day.

As a former teacher, I never scrubbed in for a gender reassignment surgery, but I did instruct the kids on how to get the window screens off in case of an active shooter…

The God of Bad Art gets offerings from all over the world, but in Their temple, They sometimes appear. "Why bad art?" I ask. "It is brave", the God replies. "To try and fail?" "No," the God chuckles. "Any creative work is a defiance of entropy, of Death itself. If you create, you do not fail."

Curiosity led me to this plot-heavy, Christie-tribute - with an absolute gut-punch reveal near the end that had me immediately going back to the beginning to see how the author pulled it off. Brilliant . #Booksky 💙📚🔎

Yes it’s an overt homage to “And Then There Were None” but very much its own tale, not just a Japanese retelling. I full-on shrieked at Whodunnit followed by lots of “wait, what??” all thru the HOW it was done reveal. Very, very clever.

“If one man hadn’t been bitten by a monkey…” Brilliant thread on an obscure but ultimately very impactful bit of European history. 👇🏻🧵

Odd This Day@oddthisday.bsky.social

So, unhappy 106th anniversary, Alexander, King of Greece, dead at just 27 on this day in 1920 from a macaque bite that went septic, leading—what with one thing and another—to a *lot* of other deaths, the birth of modern Turkey, and Prince Philip marrying the woman who would be Queen Elizabeth II...

Saturday night with Minnie Driver, 2xCusacks, an unhinged Dan Ackroyd, about a million bullets, and one hell of a soundtrack. Grosse Point Blank: perfect movie 👍🏻

Maybe it’s the painkillers but this one made me giggle for five full minutes.

If K-9 were analogous with AI it would be humping your leg in a disconcertingly over-familiar way, casually pissing on public institutions & dragging it's arse over your children's future. Then sniffing over the results expecting praise & encouragement for it's instinctive but misplaced behaviour.

Him: you just finished ANOTHER book? Me: I’m literally physically unable to do anything except read & watch TV until this damn surgery is done so yeah, im on the book-a-day plan. 📚

Found this on my bookcase & had forgotten it existed! Alt-history/fantasy American west, with harpies & vampires and a mixed race hero/ine who just wants to wrangle broncs with the guys. Fast, bloody, and great fun - plus a brilliant ending. Must track down rest of the series. #booksky 💙📚

REMINDER! the word Grimoire (book of magic) comes from the Old French word grammaire, or grammar. The word "spell," like a magical incantation, comes from the Germanic "spel" which means "storytelling." Be careful with stories! They have power. And so do the people who tell them well

Reread this one after many years - still love it. There’s gorgeous writing, a slow-reveal alien mystery, the corrosive effect of lies, & a heartbreaking depiction of mental illness and one woman’s unraveling. A propulsive build to a fantastic ending. “Planetfall” by Emma Newman. #BookSky 💙📚🪐

Things are fucked on so many levels right now - but I just stumbled on this clip of Damascus goats. Too bizarre and ridiculous to exist and yet they do. Magnificent.

When I was in high school, every classmate's mother had a horror story about an alley or a secret clinic somewhere, blood and terror and sometimes women dying in the effort to control their own futures. Abortion saves lives.

Courtney Milan@courtneymilan.com

The reason abortion is popular right now is that roughly three generations of women have had access to it and we all know someone (possibly ourselves) whose life has been saved by it.

Another entry in the First Born realizing why his parents have So Much Stuff. Him, 1st time homeowner: you got any Halloween decorations I can have? 30 mins later he walks out happily carrying three big bags of Stuff - which will now take up residence in HIS basement. Thats how, kid 😏

Re-reading @birmo.bsky.social ‘s Disappearance trilogy and all those numpties saying “I never thought these horrors could happen in the US” clearly know squat about history but also never cracked open a SFF/alt history book cos damn! but the post-wave sections of this trilogy are prescient.

I like how his gravied brain got him confused with the guy who died in the car with Princess Diana 29 years ago but now he has to retcon that with some fake explanation and the press has to just pretend like this is normal racism and not Alzheimer's racism.

Confiscating the passport of the elected representative of the opposition territory in a raid with a flimsy pretext to attempt to strip them of citizenship is something we have words for when it happens in other countries

Me: ugh second knee replacement next month’s gonna suck. My body: oh no sweetie, you’re actually gonna need cervical spine surgery first, or this sudden loss of strength & control in your right hand will be permanent. Bodies are just … a lot.

Do I know anyone here with kids? Need recs for a weekly/monthly mailed magazine for a precocious 9-yr old girl (who dislikes boys, smart). Other countries/history/girl having adventures … See lots of online ads but idk if any are actually good?

Why yes I am watching (American) football on a Sunday morning - because spouse is at the #Eagles game in London along with a nephew, a niece, and a great-nephew & I keep hoping to spot them in the crowd 😏 Also, this crowd seems to be very much full of 🦅💚 Go Birds.

Pure fucking evil. RFK jr’s ass needs to be hauled up before The Hague.

“The children who are randomly selected not to receive the birth dose of the vaccine, those who “lost the lottery”, face in their earliest days the risk of contracting hepatitis B, which can cause irreversible lifelong damage.” No words. I am speechless. This violates all ethical boundaries.

First born a few weeks ago: my god you guys have too much Stuff, you hoarders. Same guy today, moving into the house he just bought: hey have you got x,y,and z I can use? Hoarders, indeed. (And yes we did gave x, y, and z…)

Just got a Medicare email that was a five paragraph stream of 💩 from fucking Trump yabbering about “giving” me $90 to help with healthcare costs and I cannot think of anything LESS LIKELY TO MAKE ME FEEL BETTER. 😡🤮

Brilliant multi-pov tale of survival & revolution and hope, on a generation ship divided by language - political space opera at its best from a master of Arabfuturism. Eager for book two, coming next year. #booksky 💙📚🪐 “The Republic of Memory” by Mahmud El Sayed @mahmudelsayed.bsky.social

Him: yr watching tv, not resting! Me: I’m watching Aliens Him: … Me: ? Him: it doesn’t sound restful… Me: Ridley is kicking ass, it’s VERY restful 😏

Getting blood drawn at the clinic and there’s a two (?) year old girl protesting the state of everything LOUDLY - and in two languages. Impressive. Also, same, kid, same 😱

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

We've had the ability to watch, say, Counterstrike marathons, Street Fighter tournaments, or chess matches between computers since the 90s. Spectacles which, by their very definition, would be at a "higher standard" than human play. And nobody wants it. It's entirely meaningless. It has no appeal.
