Gigantic Genealogies I wrote before about how Carol Rose's Giants, Monsters, and Dragons includes a lot of that first item that were often just names invented for genealogies. I thought that idea did deserve a little more exploration. Giants in mythology and folklore are incredibly common, but…

vovatia.wordpress.comGigantic GenealogiesI wrote before about how Carol Rose's Giants, Monsters, and Dragons includes a lot of that first item that were often just names invented for genealogies. I thought that idea did deserve a little more exploration. Giants in mythology and folklore are incredibly common, but also a bit tricky because they can be so many different things. A giant can be slightly bigger than ordinary humans, or the size of a mountain, or even bigger than the whole world. Sometimes the size of a particular giant can change even over the course of a single story.

Nintendo Fun Club News Mail Bag (Feb / March 1988). It's interesting to see how people back then interpreted how a character looked based on in-game sprites. Official Nintendo artwork wasn’t always easy to find in 1987. That Ganon was a total shot in the dark.

Reviews of Jorge Luis Borges' "The Book of Imaginary Beings" and Carol Rose's "Giants, Monsters, and Dragons"

vovatia.wordpress.comIndexing the ImaginaryI recently bought two books about different sorts of fictional beings from mythology, folklore, and literature. I'd read one before, but not the other. I've been interested in this kind of fantastic reference work for a long time. And a lot of the creatures featured in them can be considered monsters, so that makes them relevant to the current time of year. The Book of Imaginary Beings, by Jorge Luis Borges, translated by Andrew Hurley - I remember checking out this book from my high school library more than once. It's the first thing I read by this author, and definitely a favorite of mine, so I decided to buy a used copy.

I really think "Dr. Mario" was onto something. Every action platformer franchise should have an explicable spinoff about the lead character engaging in some occupation which requires a professional certification they clearly do not possess. I want a game about Crash Bandicoot operating a forklift.

Gives your favourite niche media a high-profile adaptation, but introduces a original element which is wildly destructive to the basic themes of the source material and becomes its central defining feature in the public consciousness forever after.

Reviews of "Game of Thrones" and the new "Resident Evil" movie

vovatia.wordpress.comGo Westeros, Young ManThis time, I have reviews of a television show and a movie, with SPOILERS for both. Game of Thrones - I came to this show pretty late, but since I read all the books after getting a set as a present, I figured I should watch it. I think it was generally a good adaptation, well acted and hitting most of the major plot points I remembered from the source material. That said, even though the episodes were pretty long sometimes, it sometimes felt like they rushed through a lot of stuff.

Reviews of Gordon R. Dickson's "The Dragon at War," T. Kingfisher's "Paladin's Hope," Owen Davies' "Grimoires," and Marie-Anne de Roumier-Robert's "The Voyages of Lord Seaton to the Seven Planets" and "The Water-Sprites"

vovatia.wordpress.comGrim and GrimoireThe Dragon at War, by Gordon R. Dickson - I thought this installment from the series was more interesting than the last, due largely to the more fantastic aspects of it. This time, the King of France is planning to invade England, and his sorcerer has gotten some ferocious sea serpents on their side. On the advice of Carolinus, his teacher of magic, Jim Eckert goes to seek help from a kraken, only to find out he has his own agenda. There's also a friendly giant from the sea who helps out, and the wolf Aargh and small dragon Secoh come back into the story.

On the Sea Peoples of the late Bronze Age

vovatia.wordpress.comI See Sea PeopleI did not watch the recent Odyssey movie. I'm not saying I won't someday, but I think it looked a bit dull from the previews. But then, are previews ever really trustworthy? I did see mentions that it left out some of the most entertaining parts of the story, like the bag of winds and Odysseus telling Polyphemus his name was Nobody. And there's apparently a really corny line towards the end about the Age of Bronze coming to an end. How would anyone IN the Bronze Age have known that we'd call it that later on?

Reviews of Gregory Maguire's "The Oracle of Maracoor," Marissa Meyer's "The House Saphir," Rene Daumal's "Mount Analogue," Esther Friesner's "Mustapha and His Wise Dog," and Thomas Burnett Swann's "Day of the Minotaur"

vovatia.wordpress.comMaracoor, Mountains, and MinotaursHere are my thoughts on some other books I've finished recently, besides the John Mandeville one. The Oracle of Maracoor, by Gregory Maguire - The second book of the Another Day series has Elphaba's granddaughter Rain escape from prison with the ten-year-old Cossy during an invasion. Some kind of rift in reality leads to mythical creatures showing up in Maracoor, including some harpies who join them on their journey. A few Winged Monkeys also appear, and Iskinaary the Goose returns. The party seeks out the titular Oracle, who turns out to be the Wizard of Oz again, as his balloon brought him to this country after he fled the Emerald City.
