(1/n) 23 years ago today, I left Mumbai for Fairbanks, a wild journey seared into my memory like it happened yesterday. It was my first international flight and only my second time on a plane.

(4/n) Most importantly, I remember the warmth of the local 🇺🇸 community and the Indian 🇮🇳expat network in Alaska. They made me feel welcome and at home from the moment I landed and throughout my first months settling in.

(5/5) My hope is that anyone starting a new journey in a foreign land experiences that same kindness, compassion, cultural curiosity, and sense of opportunity that I was so fortunate to find in 🇺🇸.

(2/n) I still vividly remember saying goodbye to my parents and the dozen relatives who came to the airport, experiencing air conditioning at the airport for the first time, and falling instantly in love with kimchi on the long Korean Air flight.

(3/n) I remember using a $10 calling card during my layover in Korea to tell my parents I had reached safely & was heading to Anchorage. The sunrise over the Bering Strait, snow-capped Alaskan mountains coming into view, & Lumidee’s "Never Leave You (Uh Oh)" playing on the inflight radio channel.

I’m very happy this is finally out! Here, we showcase the combination of BONCAT and SIP metaproteomics to uncover rare and active microbes driving anaerobic acetate turnover. We are excited to see what other microbial metabolisms and ecosystems this approach can help to illuminate! 🦠

This commentary offers a clear, powerful statement of why freedom of speech is at the heart of democracy and must be defended, whether the speaker is Charlie Kirk or Jimmy Kimmel, MAGA supporters or MAGA opponents.

While I love "innovative interdisciplinary research projects", all of my projects require coding experience, strong engineering & microbiology foundations, & quantitative skills - so the "minimal experience required" really irks me, even tho the screenshot is a spam email.

🧪 CRITICAL UPDATE: The House draft version is now out. ✅ Like the Senate's version, there's no cut to NASA's budget. ❌ There's a 23% proposed cut to NSF's budget. 8-page summary: appropriations.house.gov/sites/evo-su... Draft bill: appropriations.house.gov/sites/evo-su...

🧪 BREAKING (good news): Senate subcommittee says NO! to Trump's proposed slashes to NASA & NSF funding. Today, the subcommittee said to keep NASA + NSF funding at $33.9 billion, the same as in FY24. See 7:15 below. Full Senate appropriations committee meets tomorrow about it. 🧵 1/3

I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE. This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined. It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play. And people are disappearing.

I was briefed on the intelligence last week. Iran posed no imminent threat of attack to the United States. Iran was not close to building a deliverable nuclear weapon. The negotiations Israel scuttled with their strikes held the potential for success.

Just some creepy armed Mad Max guys trying to gain entry to Dodgers Stadium. ICE says it wasn’t them. DHS says they were Border Patrol. But honestly who the hell knows? They’ve given permission for any psycho to put on a ski mask, point a gun, grab people & throw them into an unmarked vehicle.

BREAKING: A federal judge ruled all transgender and intersex people can obtain passports that align with their gender identity while the case against President Trump's executive order proceeds. While this is good news, we will continue fighting until this executive order is blocked permanently.

Our unofficial crowdsourced estimate of yesterday’s protest turnout is rising to 4.2-7 million as we gather more data. At this point potentially the second-largest single day of protest in U.S. history! www.gelliottmorris.com/p/no-kings-d...

gelliottmorris.com"No Kings Day" protests turn out millions, rebuking TrumpOur unofficial estimate is that around 4-6 million people attended a protest event yesterday. Anti-Trump resistance is outpacing 2017.

Based on crowd-sourced records of No Kings Day event turnout, and extrapolating for the cities where we don't have data yet, it looks like roughly 4-6 million people protested Trump across the U.S. yesterday. That's nearly 2% of the U.S. pop! Mobilized anti-Trump resistance is exceeding 2017 levels

This story started when we put two Vibrio species commonly found in the coastal oceans under the microscope. V. anguillarum cannot grow on alginate, an algal polysaccharide, but V. cyclitrophicus can. So how does the former species grow? The answer: By killing the ones that can #Microsky #T6SS

Violence is never acceptable—of course, I condemn it.   But I've also got news for everyone: the President who pardoned criminals who beat police officers nearly to death DOESN'T care about public safety.   Trump just wants more chaos as pretext to further abuse his authority.

Governor Gavin Newsom@governor.ca.gov

Los Angeles: don’t take Trump’s bait. Trump wants chaos and he’s instigated violence. Those who assault law enforcement or cause property damage will risk arrest. Stay peaceful. Stay focused. Don’t give him the excuse he’s looking for.
