Based on crowd-sourced records of No Kings Day event turnout, and extrapolating for the cities where we don't have data yet, it looks like roughly 4-6 million people protested Trump across the U.S. yesterday. That's nearly 2% of the U.S. pop! Mobilized anti-Trump resistance is exceeding 2017 levels

We generated our estimates by crowdsourcing and painstakingly checking data integrity for thousands of protest events held across the U.S. yesterday. We used official organizer tallies, news reports, self-reports from rally attendees, and AI analysis of protest pictures and video

The result is, we think, the most comprehensive source for the turnout at yesterday's No Kings Day events. This is not an _official_ estimate by any means. But we do think it's more credible than relying on one single source or a finger-in-the-wind org guesstimate.

At the one I attended people were coming and going over the course of the event. Which indicates the total who attended was higher by some margin than the max crowd size at any given point.

We do not intend this to be the final word. Rather, in the hybrid journalist-academic spirit of Strength In Numbers, we endeavor to help other people with their work. We have published our data publicly for researchers to use and build on. Data linked Here: www.gelliottmorris.com/p/no-kings-d...

I think your figure for Boston is a large overestimate. The source is a unattributed number in a news article with no sources; that's not reliable!

Hi, organizer in New York here. Your New York numbers are way off. It was about 200k. Corrections should be going out. We filled over a mile of the city with dense crowd for 3 hours. That whole time the march route was refilling with new people. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

theguardian.comMillions across US turn out for ‘No Kings’ protests against Donald TrumpProtesters demonstrate at about 2,000 sites nationwide on day US president holds military parade in Washington

Estimates from April 5 was 5+ million. There were definitely more yesterday. Many small towns are being ignored in this data. My town had about 700 protesters and has a population of 11k. Each town next my town also had a protest.

The "crowd-sourced" sheet I've seen estimated 5,000 for Denver, which is absurd -- that's what was estimated for Boulder, and half of what was estimated for the smaller city of Fort Collins, CO. The local news made an estimate from a drone or plane *after the No Kings event ended.* So frustrating.

I think you are way under. Chat GPT did a sample survey across the protests in the news and created a conservative average of 16,000 each. 2,100 protests would be 33 million protestors. Look at how many were in the big cities. Boston had 1 million alone.

You can’t trust the AI analysis. I know it’s tempting because it’s tedious to use conventional methods. I have heard estimates as high as 11 million.

They are completely insane with their performances and lies 🙄 like none of us have been here since the birth of their Patriarchy!! NO MORE greedy, privileged colonizers that are absolutely NOT morally superior and absolutely LOVE 🤑🤑🤑 and violence! #MMEIP #NoKings

I was in Chicago's. I don't see how it could plausibly have been 1 million. That's more than one-third of the entire city's population. That would mean somebody came from EVERY household, on average. I would definitely believe 100,000, though.

AltNationalParks just released a 12.1 total. Seems inconceivable except when you divide 12 million by 2100. This is your wheelhouse. Not mine so please correct my math.

May all those who are suddenly engaged & impassioned, especially those who decided NOT to vote, begin to listen to the most marginalized group of people who’ve been sounding the alarms (92%). We can & should always work together, but we must remember to lift those voices & not discredit them.

While there’s questions about the actual number numbers, I think the trend line is clear- using a consistent methodology over time, you are reporting that there’s been a huge explosion of people mobilizing against this administration.

this is severely underestimated -- Sonora was listed as 200 when we had 1500-2000. It's now corrected for Sonora but keep that discrepancy in mind for the other locations.

The V for victory sign, waving, cheering, and honking - the ultimate measures of civic engagement! Can we also count the number of people who silently mouthed "Thank you, Susan" in solidarity?

Don’t forget the entire flotilla of federal civil servants who may feel the same way but were uncomfortable at the idea of marching with you all. I’m just saying they may exist in large numbers. 🤷

I said somewhere (not necessarily here) that we were on track to hit the 3.5% 'magic number' by fall. Now I think we'lll hit it my August 1st. Trump's days are numbered.

I was hoping for 5 million. Next time, 50% more than that will turn out. And the time after that, we’ll get 10 million marching. That will put America into the 3.5% territory needed to toss the GOP fascist gang out of office and out of power.

And we need to do it again next week. And the week after that. We need big and consistent criticism that cannot be ignored. It’s frightening that it took us until June to show up. Just one day is easy to ignore. Let’s do it often enough that nyt & WP headline writings can’t explain euphemistically.

Just tuned in to CNN talking about the “thousands” — not tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands, never mind millions — who turned out yesterday to protest Trump. I had already seen the pictures of protests around the country so I knew they were way off. This is how the media weakens democracy.

Yeah, and they’ll argue it’s still factual because you know, they didn’t quantify how many thousands there were. After all, a few thousand thousands is a couple of million. Pathetic “reporting”.

This is a genuine question. I only start with that because it’s hard to distinguish if something is sarcasm in a post. I respectfully want to be educated as to why 3.5% was the target and what makes that number significant. Can someone please explain it to me?

11 million would be around 3.3%, and considering I saw there were 1,000 people who showed up to an unofficial protest in my L.A. neighborhood yesterday, I'm estimating it's still even higher

National Park Service said 11 Million. There were 5 million in April and this day was so much bigger.

In Pasadena, CA (and I'm sure pretty much all of the protests), the crowd was still growing when it was approaching the official end of the event. They estimated that in what was supposed to be the last hour it grew by almost a thousand people.

If the average was 10,000 (just using a round number) then that would be over 20 milllion. So if jsut 5,000 average this it was 10-10.5 million people. But let’s say it was only an average of 1,000 that’s 2-2.5 million. With the big ones the avg was over 1k though.

Now that @gelliottmorris.com has written the topline numbers, for @thexylom.com's FREE newsletter, I divulged some behind-the-scenes details of how this collaborative reporting/ data gathering effort came about (spoiler: Google Sheets broke at least twice because so many of you were helping out!)

“I see no ships”, said someone, sometime (it was Nelson, 1801 at the battle of Copenhagen, to be precise) and the American right wing MAGA press are turning a blind eye to political truth now! Not in a brave way!

This is disingenuous. Those are numbers we put up in April. Anyone with eyes can see that yesterday was not the same. I was at Indy for both and yesterday more than doubled Hands Off and was like no protest I’ve ever seen here. There were 55 protests across the state which was double too.

I attended one in St. Louis and I swear it was 10 times larger than the previous one that I attended. Previous one was in the hundreds. (Of course it was also cold and rainy that day) This one was in the thousands. I’ve heard estimates of 7-10k.

I attended the San Francisco protest and it was easily the largest protest I've ever attended, at least in recent history. (The 2000s had some huge protests with the Iraq War and Prop 8.) People who attended the Hands Off protests earlier said this one was at least twice as big.

Agreed. The photo the local paper posted was once again clearly taken within the first 5 min of the event and then they left. They claimed only 3/4k for Indy. Those of us who were there trust the 15k that the organizers who were there and stayed during the ENTIRE event doing the counting counted.

If you’re a real journalist you’d go to the source to get the numbers not these bs editorials who didn’t speak to a single fucking protestor or bother to stay for more then 30 min to get a few shots for their “paper”

THANK YOU! 4K is laughable for Indy. I have never in my life seen a protest at the Statehouse have a turnout like that and I’ve been to several for different issues. The attendance was fantastic and the support from the road was incredible. I still heard cars honking in my head as I went to sleep.

That's not including us disabled people who could not get out to protest, but took to our phones to repost photos of the protest. We did what we could to help!

My spouse and I didn't know there was a "pre-register" at the website. We just showed up at the posted time. When we arrived, the organizers said they had 1,100 registered. From visuals of walking around the event space and spillover into city streets, it had to be near double that number.

This is so reassuring. When history asks where were you? We will reply: ‘In the streets, with the patriots who know American democracy was born in 1776 but it’s very much alive in ‘25’. Was here in Charlotte and the Queen City has #NoKings 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

And it should be held every year on June 14, in conjunction with Flag day, to remind us of the man who would be king, on his own birthday. He should be remembered for the traitor that he is, and a symbol of eternal resistance to dictatorial leadership in the land of the free and home of the brave.

Our No Kings rally was twice the size of Hands Off -- and there were more protests near us than last time -- two of them just a few miles away! I bet this number gets updated.

My thoughts as well. Police departments were also underestimating attendance as well (which I wouldn’t be surprised if it was intentional). If they’re using that data, I would be suspect.

Tucson is not a large city. but there were at least four separate well attended protests: Besides the thousands of walking protestors at these different locations, there was a parade of hundreds of cars. Probably 2-3 ppl per car.

tucson.comPhotos: "No Kings" protests draw large crowds across Tucson and Oro ValleyResidents in Oro Valley and Tucson came together in a national "No Kings Day of Defiance" protest, to counter the military parade in Washington D.C. to mark the Army's 250th

Granovetter has a ‘riot’ threshold model. At certain #’s many more people come in from the sidelines to join the resistance. 2% is probably such a threshold. Friends last night guessed that 3.5% would lead to a big increase in participants and change the political climate decisively against MAGA.

Way, way off...closer to 11 million. I can get to 5 million just by multiplying our little local turnout of 2,500 by 2,169. Crude cut, not EVEN factoring in the tens of thousands at the BIG rallies

Way more than that. Small towns that did not have planned protests had their own impromptu protests. My little town of 2k had about 50-70 people protest and there was nothing planned. So, I'm guessing that about 3% of the country was out protesting.

It looks about right for my small city, but due to the scattered nature of the protest I think it would have been hard to count. You provided the first estimate I’ve seen. Thank you!

Anecdotal, but... The breadth of the turnout was astonishing to me. I drove around after leaving a protest, & EVERY LITTLE TOWN had 100's to 1,000's lining the streets with handmade signs. I'm in my 70's, in college during Vietnam protest era, and this dwarfs anything I have seen previously.

That gave me goosebumps. People coming together en masse is a sight to see. Happened with Diana's death. The public reaction and outrage at the absence of the 'Royal' family scared the Establishment so much they came down from Balmoral [Scottish Castle retreat], did walkabouts, bowed heads as 1/2

2/2 Diana's carriage passed by Buckingham Palace; uniquely, never done before except for monarchs, the flag on BP was at half-mast... they knew their [fake] exalted position was in peril. That's the power of en masse opposition. Wonder if Trump will respond by merely ignoring it?

I don't know how one could estimate the numbers involved in all of these mostly spontaneous, local, and unorganized protests. But their sheer prevalence in so many communities surely indicates something is happening.

The is a truly simple but time consuming method to get a decent crowd size estimate.. Estimating crowd size involves dividing the event area into sections, determining an average number of people per section based on density, and then multiplying to get the total crowd size

There are formulas for density etc. A lot of crowd estimates are based on peopleI who preregistered to Indivisible..I would double that because most people showup ad hoc. Alslso I am

Most of the local protests I witnessed were, so far as I know, tied to Indivisible, so "unorganized" was not the right word. But most of the people I met had not registered, they just came. Some (like us) decided which protest to attend only at the last minute. So spontaneous in that way.

Chat GPT did a sample survey across the protests in the news and created a conservative average of 16,000 each. 2,100 protests would be 33 million protestors. Look at how many were in the big cities. Boston had 1 million alone.
