Absolutely brutal numbers on inflation for Trump: -Gas is up 5.6% for the past month and 29.2% for the past 12 months -Food is up 0.7% in April and 3.2% for the past year. -Core CPI rose 2.8% in the past 12 months -Tomatoes are up 15.1% month over month

I think it’s worth considering all the other things he’s bragged about if he is bragging about this

Kevin M. Kruse@kevinmkruse.bsky.social

Trump repeatedly bragging about being asked to take the dementia screener is like a work colleague bragging about having to take daily court-ordered drug tests.

This is why ultimately I think Claude is the only AI model that survives at scale. big companies will shell out for a Claude license to do coding/cybersecurity stuff and basically no one else will be willing to pay for anything else

yeah i dunno if "its pretty good at coding now" is gonna cover that

“the democrat play like Trump but use it to help people and not cause disasters” would be the absolute nightmare scenario for them

Schooley@schooley.bsky.social

Republicans genuinely didn't think Democrats would ever fight back in kind and it's hilarious to see them panic at the thought of them actually taking on Trump by his own rules.

I believe his high floor can break and look to that cost of living number for how low it could potentially break

James Downie@jamescdownie.bsky.social

There's no other way to say it: This AP-NORC poll is atrocious for Trump. – Overall: 33-67 – Immigration: 40-59 – Iran: 32-67 – Economy: 30-70 – Cost of living: 23(!)-76 37% of Republicans disapprove of his handling of the economy, 47% disapprove on cost of living. apnorc.org/projects/few...

I am no pollster, but I would guess that if you polled people who agreed with 90% of the 2016 democratic platform, they would have voted much more heavily for Clinton than people who voted for Obama in 2012 but only agreed with 50% of the 2016 democratic platform

historians will discuss how trump’s origins in reality tv and the idea of having a public brand/persona contributed to everyone accepting this as merely a populist flavor of political speech when in fact this is just how he talks due to almost 2 decades of gradually deteriorating mental health

Another Reagan graph

Max Kennerly@maxkennerly.bsky.social

Probably so, and it's not like we've made progress on "you're being cheated out of the benefits of your labor" in the past 50 years. From 1979Q4 to 2025Q4, productivity is up 92.4% but hourly pay is only up 33.6%, a gap that just keeps growing.

Much like the liberation day tariffs, I feel like a lot of mainstream outlets are fumbling the bag at conveying how stupid and unambiguously bad the Iran War is. To simply explain where we were and where we are now would seem like a partisan attack but unfortunately reality really is that dumb.

Like I just heard a promo of a podcast where some guy is like “I’m surprised Iran agreed to a ceasefire!” - and like, A) it’s not a real ceasefire and B) even if it was they are in so much stronger position than they were 2 months ago!

This is, IMO, why Trump usually picks deeply flawed and compromised people to staff his administration. He likes to have a clear line of attack for if/when they abandon him.

Greg Sargent@gregsargent.bsky.social

When Trump needed the conspiracy-theorizing masses of Alex Jones in his coalition, he was fine with Jones' Sandy Hook denial. Now that Alex Jones has shown disloyalty to *him,* suddenly Trump professes to care about it. This gets at MAGA's deepest perversities. newrepublic.com/article/2089...

Donald Trump must be removed from office for threatening war crimes and genocide. Speaker Johnson: bring the House back into session. Invoking the 25th Amendment and impeachment must be on the table, but Congress should also move on a War Powers resolution to stop Trump.

I am no expert but I do understand the normal constitutional remedy is impeachment and imo you should just keep introducing impeachment in the house and putting the most vulnerable members of congress on blast. They have to be more vulnerable to pressure on this than Pete Hegeth.

Andrew Solender@andrewsolender.bsky.social

A second House Democrat, Jasmine Crockett, sends Vance and the cabinet a letter urging them to invoke the 25th Amendment:

“Please Mr Hegseth- we need your vote to remove the man whose making all your GI Joe fantasies come true to replace him with a guy who never wanted to go to war”

I’m in between the mtsw “they like Trump and want him to win” understanding of the msm and the ”they are hyper tuned to the anxieties of media literate liberals only and program to engage those anxieties“- but either way those 2 understandings are not mutually exclusive and functionally the same

mtsw@mtsw.bsky.social

I think especially because the news media has recently demonstrated what "we think the president is incompetent and that he should not be in office" looks like in how they covered Biden post-debate and don't do the same for Trump

I think one of the things about bluesky is that for a lot of its users, it represents a kind of retirement from social media. Like I’m tired and I want to get out of the game

I think the O/G thing is actually a singular Trump trait as the rare American who is simultaneously 1) too cognitively stunted to learn anything and 2) born too rich to have ever had to buy gas for himself before in his life

"But they don't have the votes for impeachment so you can't criticize them for not saying it" is fallacious. Dems don't have the votes to do anything. Even post-midterms, they still wouldn't have the votes to override vetoes, either. It's nonsensical to say they therefore shouldn't advocate stuff.

Replying to @rincewind.run

also it is particularly fitting that trump has finally succeeded in proving that tariffs can fund a country, only for that country to be iran

I just think at least 2 of these justices are operating on the same level as the people who post AI pictures of a bunch of white people drinking soda on Main Street with the caption “we need to return to this.” Nostalgia for an imagined past infects the conservative movement on every level.

Julian Sanchez@normative.bsky.social

An increasingly evident irony: originalism’s big selling point was meant to be that it constrains judges from subtituting their policy preferences for those of elected legislators. But in the wild it serves as a pretext to liberate them from precedent & treat history as a proof text.

I think fundamentally what happened here was openAI released a neat little chatbot that millions had fun playing with for a few minutes in late 2022 and because Silicon Valley is so hyper sensitive to adoption rates and network effects they vastly overestimated what they had here.

Ian Boudreau@ianboudreau.com

Maybe it wasn't a good idea to lead off the marketing campaign by aggressively, coercively pushing half baked garbage ideas

Like I am not so aggressively anti-AI as to deny that the novelty of 2022 era chatGPT wasn’t very cool and incredible. But attempting to ride that excitement into realigning the entire economy around chatbots is crazy and we shouldn’t be gaslit into thinking it’s wrong to point that out

And yes there are some very legitimately good usecases for AI but I suspect we are being misled about the extent to which the chatbot interface and the humongous amount of data and processing required is even necessary for these tools to be useful tbh

I sometimes cynically think these people enter a primary not to win but to be the other half of a wedge issue/legitimize republican framings

Ohh, so RFK is a *liar* liar

Acyn@acyn.bsky.social

RFK JR: One time, Trump grabbed a placemat, turned it over, took a Sharpie, and drew a perfect map of the Middle East. Then he marked the troop strength of every country along each border on that map. It challenged a lot of the assumptions I had been told about him.
