Newly disabled people, I say this with love: Two things are true. 1. Your expectations for your life have been disrupted. Maybe permanently. You have the right to take space and grieve that. 2. There is life beyond that disruption. Millions of us are living it.

The official policy in many, many countries is and has been that disabled people are disposable. This isn’t new for us. That it’s new to nondisabled people is ceaselessly frustrating. We have been speaking about our erasure and eradication for decades.

When you’re chronically ill, there’s nothing worse than depending on someone who doesn’t show up. When you can’t do your own activities of daily living, you need kind & reliable caregivers. When they’re erratic, abusive or absent… your mental and physical health suffers. We deserve better.

I appreciate that Dolly Parton refused to participate in "dress respectability" and, by her own account, modeled her aesthetic after a town "tramp," who she thought was beautiful. She separated aesthetics from character and understood "classiness" to be about how you treat people, not how you dress.

“If it’s that bad you should go to the hospital”. The hospital is not a solution for many disabled people. Most of us have endured severe medical trauma. ERs are not equipped to deal with complex chronic illness and will often make a bad situation worse. We can’t “just” go to the hospital.

ICE enforcement is a disability rights issue. They prey on disabled people who can’t fight back. The conditions in the camps are perfect for the spread of disease. People are denied medical care, medications and safe food & water. This man is losing the ability to walk and no one will help him.

The eugenicist rhetoric that’s worked so well for Covid is now being applied to climate change. They want you to believe it won’t impact you. It’ll only hurt those “other” people. The vulnerable. The elderly and disabled. The “useless eaters” society deemed expendable.

I also want to add that every single time ICE has physically hurt me, they have grabbed me by my chest. Most of my femme friends have said the same. I will not be surprised if / when we find out about twisted sexual assaults conducted by ICE agents with these gloves.

Stigma is why I HAVE to use a wheelchair these days, because I pushed too hard to get “better” and go without a brace during a critical period, and then again forcing myself to walk at work. It is not better to “tough it out”. It’s how you get hurt, sometimes extremely permanently.

Disabled people deserve housing, healthcare, food and assistance. They deserve a living wage. They shouldn’t be forced to beg for scraps, barred from having assets or forced to re-justify their disability over and over. When basic needs are denied, people die. It’s passive eugenics.

My disability impacts my proprioception… meaning I’m constantly bumping & banging into things. A few weeks ago I developed a nasty foot infection, and two days ago I sliced open my hand cutting the gauze FOR the foot infection. Chronic illness is no joke. Signed, gauze paw.

Imagine if we just believed disabled people? If we trusted that they were the experts in their bodies? If we listened when they said they could do something, and supported them when they said they couldn’t. If we gave accommodations and assistance without judgment? That’s true inclusion.
