Our next Corner Society features Pablo Gómez, giving a talk titled "The Early Atlantic Slave Trade and the Invention of Modern Corporeality." These events are free - you can at the link below to attend in person or via Zoom. Really looking forward to hearing from Pablo!

Exactly this. When people complained about us removing the non-dom status, they predicted a mass exodus. This of course never came because things like enforcement of contract law and a lack of gulags is actually quite attractive.

Descartes's Le Monde is a fascinating and under-studied work in its own. The articles collected in this special issue tackle several important features from an innovative perspective! here the TOC

That challenge comes from malign foreign interference in British politics and society, direct challenges on the street to authority of the state, and an unprecedented influx of finance that significantly erodes democratic pluralism.

Politicians on the centre-left and centre-right simply don't seem to understand they are in an existential battle for the future of British democracy.

I do think “every rich person went insane during covid because it was the first time they’ve been inconvenienced in decades” felt a little reductive at first but damn if isn’t more and more compelling as the years drag on

So happy to finally share the news that my book, “A History of Uncertainty: Science between the Ottoman Empire and Early Modern Europe,” will be out in Spring 2027 by the University of Pittsburgh Press. I still can't believe it's now beyond my hands and on its way to meeting its readers.

It's driving me insane. The govt spends £1.4 trillion a year. Borrowing estimates are often by tens of billions over a year. But we're supposed to imagine money is budgeted to the last penny.

Karl Whelan@karlwhelan.bsky.social

Christ almighty. The British obsession with itemized “pay fors” for everything is insane. This is just really not how fiscal policy or government works anywhere functional.

the lie (or misunderstanding) at the heart of this is the idea that a 26-year old graduate should be earning the same as a 42-year old aka the average worker when has that ever been the case?

It's quaint that Keir Starmer thinks a policy blitz can improve his chances. If the current situation were about a few policies, Reform wouldn't be anywhere near power. The issue is his failure to articulate a vision for society. Apart from Sunak, I don't think I've seen a PM more devoid of vision.
