In 1966, Ed Ruscha drove a car rigged with a motorized camera to capture Los Angeles’s most iconic street: Sunset Boulevard. He created a time capsule of its famed facades, beginning a 60-year-long commitment to documenting the changing urban landscape of postwar Los Angeles.

One of my favorite live theater experiences of all time is seeing Hadestown on Broadway with *most of* the original cast. Amber Grey was out for that performance, so we saw an understudy. Now that I’ve seen the pro-shot (twice!) I finally realize just how much we missed out on. She’s phenomenal.

I should add that the Hadestown pro-shot in general is incredibly thoughtful and well executed. So many different angles and beautifully framed shots woven together seamlessly. I actually gasped a few times before THE gasp.

Never forget that they had to spend trillions of dollars, build massive data centers, consume millions of galloons of water and insane amounts of electricity, just to kind of do what you can do better with your imagination and a cup of coffee. That's how envious they are of what you can do.

I’ve been finding it difficult to enjoy Western media recently, so I signed up for Viki and now I can watch all the Kdramas and other Asian content I want ad-free for $7.99/month. For less than the price of a movie ticket I basically have an unlimited sarotonin factory at my disposal.

deeply annoying that creative breakthroughs don’t come on schedule from direct work but from things like “open-ended conversations with interesting people” and “doing nothing”

Hey you. Yeah, you reading this. I hope your July is better than your June. I hope that thing you're worried about works itself out for the best. I hope they text back. I hope you find that $20 you forgot about in a pocket right when you need it most. I just really hope things for you get better.

I know this is not the biggest concern going these days, but it stresses me out that basically every artist/writer/critic is now expected to create their own tiny empire instead of getting paid by any existing entity to perform a job they've worked to get good at!!!!

It is true that this is a beautiful pluralistic country with everything good you could ever possibly want in the world and also a corrupt stinking hell hole presided over by demons who want us all dead.

My last trip to New York was at a weird time in the Broadway season. Many of the Tony-nominated shows hadn’t opened yet, but I did get to see Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) and loved it. Even though it didn’t win any awards tonight it still has a special place in my heart.

I also saw Chess and I’m pretty fine with how award season went for that show. (Did Nicholas Christopher give me chills? Yes. Do I believe he will have another chance in something worthy of his talent? Also yes.)

I did not post during the show, but other than how much I love theatre, and that Pink was a great host, my main take on the Tonys is that Leslie Odom Jr. was wearing a full suit jacket WITH A FULL LEATHER JACKET OVER IT and I want an article about it

This show *wrecked me* in the best possible way 😭

1. London Underground station flooding has reportedly been reduced by around 90% thanks to a group of engineers: beavers. After conservationists reintroduced a family of beavers into a nearby city park, the animals built dams and restored wetlands that now absorb and slow floodwater naturally.

I loved working in entertainment journalism and I miss it so much, but on days like today I’m reminded to be grateful that I can still make a living writing about things that interest me (animals and conservation). That used to be a thing more people could do.

Something I've always found fascinating about Crichton's Jurassic Park is the small but persistant undercurrent that — while having to figure out how to care for dinosaurs from square one is certainly tricky and dangerous — the real problem is that Hammond wants to somehow run a zoo with no staff

Listening to this now as someone who has never seen any of the films but has a lot of fondness for the original book and for the *concept* of the dinosaur park, WHICH I AM PRETTY SURE WOULD WORK FINE, BY THE WAY. Anyways, gonna be interesting!

Finally made it to the Jaws exhibit at the Academy Museum. Very well-organized, with lots of original props and fun interactive displays. My favorite thing (not pictured) was the dolly rig set up so you could use your phone camera to replicate the famous dolly shot of Brody on the beach.

A new member joining the committee! (Yes, that’s the collective noun for a group of vultures.)

A rare Cape vulture chick just hatched at the LA Zoo. 🐣 It’s the first major success from a new habitat and a big win for a vulnerable species. According to zoo officials, the species faces threats from poisoning, habitat loss and other human-related factors. #losangeles
