Trade deficit. I have bought food from say, Chilis. They have never bought food from me. There is a trade deficit with Chilis. I’m still doing fine. The trade deficit argument SOUNDS compelling, but it’s a straw man with no relevancy

We buy coffee from Brazil. We sell them NO coffee because we produce NO coffee. Trade deficit 100%. Large tariffs. This was ABSOLUTELY STUPID. It wasn’t about trade deficits, it was the willful attempt to destroy the American economy.

The ONLY reason Canada has a trade deficit with the US is because of oil sales. The US used to have a trillion dollar deficit with Saudi, but after 911 the thought was to not finance terrorists. Enter Canada, a safe, friendly trading partner selling oil at a huge discount.

What we really need to protect is vanilla beans grown in Mississippi! […] Wait — they’re not? Alabama either? Okay then: we’ve trariffed Madagascar but we can still get vanilla beans from Mexi— […] They’re tariffed too? AND chocolate? Crap.

He knows. He has not forgotten. He’s cruel. He is implementing the plan laid out before him to crash the world economy. We are being set up for another economic depression. He told MAGA to prepare for pain and they are for it. They don’t realize it’s them too. 🤦‍♀️

no more trade deficits and we will all be rich! all we gotta do is farm our own food, herd our own cattle, teach our own kids, run our own business, build our own house, build and fix our own cars, build our own phones and microchips... ITS EASY! 😆

Lesotho exports diamonds but the people there can’t afford anything America exports. So there’s a trade deficit. But is Lesotho “ripping America off?” No, it’s not. The tariffs serve no purpose except to sink a poor country into more poverty.

I would argue that it's less of a straw man fallacy and more of a steaming pile of bullshit that his cult members are genuinely stupid jackasses for believing.

We trade with each other and fight never. We don't trade with russia and look at what happens. If China and Taiwan weren't joined at the hip economically, I think China would have invaded a while ago. Donald thinks he's an emperor. Caligula maybe.

No coffee, of course, even if we invade Starbucks. And we're taxing the crap out of most of the places we get our pepper from. "Bleu" sounds awfully French, who we can't tariff enough. Maybe Chili's could do a nice Chicken Kiev?

54% of U.S. adults read at or below a 6th-grade level. You think they actually care or understand deficits, much less trade imbalances? Most of them couldnt spell tariffs properly on the first try. They understand symbology, figureheads and slogans.

I did an experiment yesterday, I made an account on foxnews and commented on basic economics eg. I asked if people were willing to buy the pricier alternative to support domestic productions. You can probably guess the answer, my conclusion is that the cable 'news' makes thoughtless idiots.

You're 100% correct. Give em a good catchy phrase, give it a positive or negative connotation, depending on which way you want to push them psychologically and boom, they're hooked. It's simple & almost foolproof. Trump does it all the time & they fall for it every time.

Trump is a true moron no amount of education will affect him. He has zero understanding about economics. Something got through his skull that tariffs will put more money in US coffers, that was all he had to hear then to scheme to steal it.

It's a flawed argument. We all engage in trade with someone or another; I even have a trade deficit with my doctors. Alongside this, there's a different argument circulating on social media suggesting that an economic collapse would allow America to pay less interest on its debt.

Dude, just stop eating at Chilis! If they are not buying your barbequed hot wings in return, they are not only missing out on some great food, they are holding back your God-given culinary leadership! It's what I learned from our Great Leader on Liberation Day!

This is the party that you supported for all those years. Sure, they are way more extreme now than ever before, but these are similar policies to what your party has always supported. I'm glad your eyes have been opened (woke)

Plus he's always banging on about trade deficits with smaller countries. "That country with 40 million people isn't buying as much as my country, that has 340 million people. THEY'RE RIPPING US OFF!!" It's idiocy. And the MAGA idiots lap it up.

No, it's not. But lets say we DID adjust for a price/head....... If we adjusted, to show "price per person", then each American spends around 1200/year on Canadian goods/services. Whereas each Canadian spends around 9300/year on American goods/services.

No, that would have required the White House to engage with economic experts, and Fat Nixon won't accept that he isn't the most Experty Expert who ever Experted, no one has ever seen anything like it.

And having a surplus does not make us richer or better. Ask any country that has a trade surplus with us if they would like to trade their giant surplus for higher standard of living, more buying power, and a stronger currency.

Only sounds compelling if you just take their word for their idiotic reasoning. We consume more than anyone not only because we are a big country but because we are basically hoarders. We have so much crap we need to rent storage ,most peeps don't do that.

As a Canadian, I can say confidently that the trade deficit for the US is about to get a whole lot bigger since no one here is buying their products anymore. 7D chess at work?

Well obviously the only solution is that you should tax yourself for everything you buy from Chilis—and everywhere else you buy food from—as punishment for them selling you food and for you not making your own food inside your body. That will force you to invest in developing photosynthesis.

It’s only a problem when national security or health is involved. Forcing the on shoring something like chips instead of relying on Taiwan, who is in danger of Chinese nefarious influence makes sense. Forcing the on shoring making jeans or sneakers, which will only raise the price Americans, is dumb

Just so little thought given to these tariffs. Example: US imports basically all the manganese ore needed for industry. Because it had almost none itself. That contributes to a trade deficit. Still need the ore, it just now costs more. Tariffs won’t put manganese in the ground.

Great way to put it. But Trump unfortunately doesn’t believe in win-win. If someone else wins, he thinks he lost. In reality, the prior success of our country came because of an abundance mentality: we can spread prosperity to everyone. So disheartening to abandon that belief as a country.

They excluded services, USA exports a lot of services, so this created deficits where there were none. You have deficits because you are so rich. You can buy more goods from countries that can't afford their own goods. But we are still wondering what you are buying off the penguins?!?!?!?!

I always thought it was the US taking advantage…of cheap labor in other countries, rather than paying our workers a fair wage and benefits. We can be selfish…love inexpensive stuff, but we are also generous when others need us. It’s never an exact tit for tat; it’s give and take that works for all.

The new tariffs are not trade police or economic policy. They are extortion, trying to get other nations and businesses to bend to the president’s will. They are unnecessary. Import tariffs are being paid by U.S. businesses and consumers, to our detriment.

we are inundated with "buy buy buy" messages. an endless stream of "sales". holidays are now promoted as days to purchases mattresses? WTF? It's veterans' day, but a mattress. How many people buy cars on a holiday? STOP FUCKING SPENDING MONEY YOU DON'T HAVE. It weakens you. Poor = Weak.

I tried coming up with an analogy. The best I could do was my cleaners. They come to my house twice a month and I never get invited to theirs. It’s just an abuse of the relationship, don’t you think?

He doesn’t know anything about anything at all - other than how to manipulate and hurt people. Once you know that he is a malicious 9 year old throwing a temper tantrum in a man’s body, everything else makes sense.

The idea that USA expects poor countries like Bangladesh and Vietnam to buy as much from USA as USA buy from them is ludicrous. USA does get alot of bang for its buck buying from poorer countries.

Adam, you are one of the few republicans that I value. May not always agree with policy differences but thank god you are not a maga. The rule of law and our democracy is of importance to you. So thank you. Scary times! I am a blue dot in my town and own a small business here so I keep my opinions 🤫

So when I buy something from you, I'm subsidising you? Also: - 10% tariffs on imports from countries where the US has a trade surplus? I.e. those that are "subsidising" the US?

- trade is a network; A buys from B, B from C, and C from A. Deficits or surpluses between A and B, or A and C are irrelevant. - services and tourism are ignored. They are trade too. He's just inventing a foreign enemy to present himself as a hero. Wrecking global economy for a good image.

Plus Trump put 10 percent on us, Australia but we buy more from you than you buy from us. Australia has a trade deficit with USA but still gets tariffs.

The countries that top the list in trade deficits, importing more than they are exporting, are the U.S., India, United Kingdom, Turkey, France, Philippines, Japan and Spain.

Beautiful image. In addition, your economy would have to change to be able to meet the competitive level of Chilli's. You'd have to source ingredients (find raw materials) and install a new kitchen (industry investment) and you'd have to retrain your household (move from tertiary to primary).

I very rarely link to videos as news sources (because watching them is so... slow...) but this 10 minute video out of Canada is the best I've seen yet to explain the screwy way the Trump regime calculated the tariffs they imposed this week. Bravo, Canada. www.cbc.ca/player/play/...

Just wait…and it won’t be long…because there won’t be anyone buying from anything from Chilis…because no one is going to have any disposable income due to the Agent Orange tariffs.

Trump, Elon and the 25’ers are economically IGNORANT. Their moves are triggering a global recession and a potential financial meltdown worse than 08/10

We get so easily distracted by #45’s tantrum, seemingly bizarre motives. The logical sense found in what he is doing - follow the money. Who will benefit from this in the short term? Certainly the oligarchs. A market short sell? What about Putin? He needs $$ to pay for his war. No tariffs for him.

How bout this. A family of three comes into you store and buys food for three. You then visit their store but as you are a family of six you buy twice as much. Is that unfair? Canada is much smaller than US. We just won’t be buying as much as you are!

The biggest problem is that Trump is taking the advice of Peter Navarro, who is a tariff hawk. Navarro wrote several books citing as an “expert source” a “man” named Ron Vara. Turns out Ron Vara is an anagram of Navarro. He was citing himself as his expert source. Unethical to say the least.

Trump has always been very pro-tariff, going back to the 80s. He would go on TV shows and talk about how the US should use tariffs to a much greater extent. I think it’s one of the only policies that he truly believes in.

It probably is, but this is coming from a man whose only "businesses" are in real estate and tv. He has never run a business that "builds" anything. How would he know what tariffs actually are. If he had actually studied Economics in college, he would know, but he doesn't.

You should punish Chilis and impose a 100% tariff. Whenever you buy something from them, send that same amount to the government - to aid the billionaire tax cut. Sorted.

We buy more from the world than they do from us because we are a fucking filthy rich country. We buy tons of shit from the rest of the world! they're is no way for this to be an even zero deficit environment

Even better. You own a restaurant. You buy kitchen equipment from a wholesaler at a cost of $150,000. You have a huge trade deficit with that wholesaler, but you, using that equipment, make $500,000 selling food to consumers. Point out who's losing in this equation?

Trump has been making the argument for 40yrs that manufacturing jobs declined due to trade deficits. Disproved many times but he has not changed his position and it resonates with people who don't think critically. Politics beats economics in elections.

America was ironically founded on escaping religious persecution. Yes, the removal of democratic norms because they don’t believe America is a democracy. They believe it is a republic and use state rights as a means to dismember federal government precedent. Project 2025

Read Project 2025. He doesn't care about the country or its people, only his bank account. Look at which countries are empowered by America shrinking (china & russia) and that shows who is paying him one way or another.

I do get that, but if the global economy crumbles, how would that help China or Russia? Especially China, whose economy largely relies on Westerners buying all the stuff they make If people can't afford food and rent, they can't afford new electronic devices etc I don't get it 🤷🏻‍♀️

The Chinese economy does not rely on US consumers. There is a whole big world that is figuring out how to live without the US. Billionaires are everywhere. They will sell off now and buy when prices are at the lowest. They wont let it go too far.

I disagree. When he’s golfing he’s not ‘governing.’ I’d pay a years worth of salary for him to endlessly golf ⛳️ without access to government powers. It might be the only way for me to have a future salary as a public servant.

If he'd stuck to strictly reciprocal tariffs, he might've had a case. The trade deficit argument is 100% pure, USDA certified horseshit. This idiot, who bankrupted most businesses he ran, thinks he knows more about economics than the large majority of trained economists. We are in grave danger.

Defiance, revenge, retaliation is what he promised. Malignant narcissists do not consult with experts in order to better fool subjects to believe they care for their welfare. And ones who sell steak at Best Buy had someone buy their college degree.

Trade deficits and national debt are basically the same thing: They sound scary. 99.99% of people (including politicians) don’t understand them. They really don’t impact the economy writ large.

And they don’t impact anyone’s personal kitchen table economics to any measurable degree. It’s not as if the government is sending regular invoices for “your share.” It’s entirely abstract.

The idea of 'self-sufficiency' essentially takes human society back to the early days of post-hunter gatherer agriculture, in other words 'pre-civilization'. The idea that any modern society can be entirely self-sufficient is ridiculous.

On the other hand, the rise of neoliberalism and globalisation has taken the exploitation of workers to new levels and fails to address the need for people to have meaningful employment and decent incomes. The needs of the many have been neglected.

It's complicated. First we run deficits on goods that are highly visible like electronics, consumer goods, toys, tools and hardware but we run surpluses on non visible things like crops, business and computer services and medical equipment. They cancel out in Europe and did in china until recently.

I go to Paris. I willingly buy beautiful scarves and macarons. I have my portrait drawn at Place du Tertre. No Parisian has ever bought a painting or souvenirs from me. There is a trade deficit with Paris. I’m still doing fine.

I have heard that Paris is taking advantage of you and you’re a victim of very nasty French people. You should charge them 50% more for all things you buy from them.

And you’d better not have any of those macarons left in your intestines when you arrive back in the US or you’ll have to pay the import duty on them.

And you and Chilis agreed to that arrangement freely because you decided it was mutually beneficial. Apparently Trump doesn’t want companies to conduct their business as they see fit.

A question to test whether your 8-year-old child needs some kind of remedial education: Taiwan (population 23m) buys less from the USA (population 342m) than the USA buys from Taiwan. Why might that be?

An estimated 5 million showed up today! 👏 Next confirmed Call to Action date: April 19th!! Why this date? It's the 250th anniversary of the battles of Lexington and Concord, which began the American Revolution = our war against the tyrannical power of Kings!! Please tell EVERYONE #50501
