My opinion: data centers are massively hated because they represent the tech overlords that are getting richer and richer off our back, and are more and more out of touch. H/t to Tim Miller for bringing this up on today’s pod. What do you think?

We hate them because they will greatly degrade the environment and when the financial bubble bursts and the system fails, they will retreat to their yachts and islands and the taxpayers will be left with the bill.

They stole our information and are milking our electricity on our dime. But the most unforgivable and dumbest is polluted our drinking water. Go to Antarctica where you can get cold air for free.

One data centre consumes 1 million gallons of water. And AI is overall a huge negative for societies. These data centres are environmentally unsustainable and govrrnments should intervene to restrict their roll out.

They're also making electricity unaffordable, ruining the environment, stealing from actual artists, ruining what little is left of the integrity of news organizations, raising temperatures, and allowing for mass surveillance. We hate them for all the reasons, not because nazi tech bros make em.

The most important factor to me, that doesn’t seem to get mentioned, is that they need to build these data centers because they need someplace to put all the surveillance data they’re acquiring on you and I. So they can raise prices in real time, so they can find us when the want. Right?

The ai industry has become too big to fail with massive investments and buildouts. Who is going to foot the bailout bill when the bubble pops? Yeah. Plus all the mass surveillance implications of these “data centers”.

I wouldn't even call this a simplistic view. More like a childish view. The fact that we all know the data centers are nothing more than get rich quick schemes to the fact they are taking valuable land and resources with the harmful noise and pollution or the fact that they destroy people's lives

The specific plans for a lot of these centers weren't publicized until they were essentially approved. When the details come to light, people realize what a center will do to their water and air. People are especially mad about the water.

I’m not a fan of golf courses but at least wildlife can live on golf courses, and there is usually a walking path, bar and restaurant for the community to use. Data centers do not support life in any way. It’s a pitch black box surrounded by gravel, asphalt and gas turbines.

You’re comparing a massive 1,000,000 sqft concrete structure filled with tons of plastic and metal to a golf course? BTW, prove that golf courses use more water. Either way, golf courses use the water to grow grass and trees, not cool the matrix so that it can murder more humans.

Tech oligarchs are the bubble people of the parasite class, strangely unaware of how disturbing they all are, believing we humans are merely pawns in their contrived dystopian game.

People have no reason to trust Zuck, Musk, Bezos, Lonsdale, Andreessen, Thiel, Altman, and the rest. They buy elections, insult the very people and communities that helped them build their companies, then move around the country to avoid taxes. I couldn’t care less about their little arms race.

These guys also talk about end times, Armageddon, white nationalism, and all sorts of other strange and disturbing things. They definitely don’t give a damn about people. Why would we trust them?

There are a lot of reasons to despise data centers. It’s the combination of job loss, increased electricity costs, environmental destruction, horrible discourse around AI slop videos, hoarding tech hardware like grubby goblins, rising costs of ram/storage/GPUs…..I can’t think of a single pro.

They are also loud, use excessive amounts of energy driving our costs up, use excessive amounts of water, and the over reliance of the technology is going to be a detriment to people and our society. It is just in the beginning stages of destroying livelihoods.

Tech Bro evil, and the vast water & electricity used by data centers raising costs; the environmental destruction; loss of our sovereignty to choose NOT to live next to one; destruction of property values; taking our jobs; and the fact that Trump Crime Family are invested in them. What’s the upside?

They pollute the water, land and use more resources than humans do and the ROI in the community is not guaranteed in any way shape or form. bsky.app/profile/dani...

This guy understands the data center game better than anyone I’ve ever heard. Use his wisdom to your communities’ benefit! m.youtube.com/shorts/wpoEh...

Water use more than whole towns of thousands! They should have to build chilling underground pools and recycle treat their water! Yes it costs more but way better for town! Charge huge water usage rates and sewer! To make them recycle chilling water!

My 600 inmate prison Had a huge underground tank to feed the Chiller to cool the whole facility! We treated and filled about 1000 gallons a month from evaporation! It works!

I think of 1848 France. Where the proletariat and petit bourgeois united to bring down a monarchy and the oligarchy that ran France. But continue to see an easily fractured country unable to unite because of petty social differences and race in the USA.

It's kind of suspicious that these places are popping up in peoples LITERAL back yards- no impact studies, none of the usual bureaucratic BS for typical construction sites. I'm seeing interviews of people who wake up with them next to their property and the sound is pretty obnoxious.

It's not just that. It's the further rape of our natural resources and planet by these tech billionaires and trillionaires. They surreptiously build these with little public notification or approval. They are pillaging!

What do data centers actually do? What "data" do they have and what is done with it? Why are there so many of them? Why can't there be just one that anyone can access if they want to? Do all data centers have the same data and do the same things with it?

Also, they are terrible neighbors. Loud and ugly. And since very few people actually work in them, they don't do anything to support local businesses.

That and the way they don’t respect the users. Example, Micro$oft pushing Copilot directly on the OS, and forcing people to watch advertisements.

In addition to the noise, pollution, increased energy costs and water removal, there’s little love for the work being performed- surveillance of our every move, every purchase, every communication.

Honey, don’t worry about it They are going to put you in a concentration camp and when they send you down to the showers, you will never come back to your room and you won’t have to worry about these things anymore. These are the fucking morons I have to live with

Bitey@jsherman999.bsky.social

I think it’s partly a response to them feeling powerless, like we all do at times. Like not a participant. Also there’s this mild hysteria out there around DCs, where local problems get blurred in people’s minds into a global problem affecting every data center, they’ll drain the Great Lakes etc

It has nothing to do with not being a participant. They’re massive polluting structures that will be used to house data on every one of us and our every move. They’re getting more and more matrix. It’s bad. It’s wrong. Nothing to do with participation.

Data centers aren't being used primarily or even secondarily as storage centers for surveillance. There's no need. Storage of that magnitude doesn't require that much space. They are used for training next-gen AI models.

They’re not, though. If they’re dropped in someplace without adequate power or cooling they’re a problem locally, but people are blurring that in their mind into a national crisis. This is mild hysteria. bsky.app/profile/jshe...

Bitey@jsherman999.bsky.social

Ag dwarfs them in water usage, but even Golf is far more, 2026 U.S. numbers: Golf courses: 1.45 billion gallons per day DCs: 48 million gallons/day, all DCs combined

Bitey@jsherman999.bsky.social

Power: All DCs added together currently use between 4% and 6% of US electricity. Most *new* requests are for DCs, so it may seem like they're sucking up everything, and they can cause local grid problems. There's a very, very smart fix for local power problems, though: bsky.app/profile/jshe...

Data centers are unnecessary in the 1st place, poorly thoughtout, a waste of natural resources, dangerous polluters for the environment & nuisances to their neighbors. They must eliminate all these negatives before being deployed. It's high tech, right? So be high tech & make yourself a common good!

It's more about the poisoning of the air and water, use of resources that people need to live, and the stealing of energy from communities while making everything more expensive on top of it. We're already dying out here, and they just make it worse.

Nah. Its because rural Americans live in a bubble and fear anything they dont understand. They're reactionary by nature and despise change. Someone stands up and lists a bunch of scary trigger words and they grab the pitchforks instead of informing themselves.

It's also a very clear example of plutocracy. The rich tech companies come in and bribe/buy politicians to ok their centers and waive environmental/zoning/other laws. The data centers don't create many jobs after they are constructed and just suck up resources and pollute, pollute, pollute.

It’s the way the deals are made secretly. We can’t even get decent public transit or paroles fixed but suddenly overnight a 100 acre building is going up in the middle of our neighborhoods. And the electricity, and dirty water, and noise pollution, and higher electricity rates…basically all of it.

What "data" are they storing? When you eat, what you eat, where you eat, how you eat, who is with you when you eat, how much you eat, cost of what you eat, ethnicity of the food you eat, time you eat and what you shit. All while killing the grid and wasting precious water. Fuck big tech bro.

They run this app and all the other apps you use daily. Your streaming services. Your utility systems. Your banking. Its all housed and run out of these sites, because the companies themselves don't have the money to or the infrastructure to do it themselves at the scale required for all of US.

Take every bit of personal info from all the apps and analyse it to figure how best take every thing you hold sacred Record every word you post, blah blah blah. There is a difference between infrastructure and hyper surveillance. e.g. facial recognition paired with surveillance... not just the usa

They are hated because people largely don't understand them and they are a convenient symbol for outrage junkies to get their fix through bandwagon sloganeering on social media. Golf courses use more water in a *day* than all day centers in the WORLD do in a *year*. Where's the outrage?

So does growing corn that humans largely don't consume because it's used for ethanol or feeding to cows to provide reduced caloric food that humans do consume. When this is all explained, the argument will shift to something else.

Do you have a citation for that alleged factoid? Golf courses consume approximately 2.08 billion gallons per day in the United States = 760 billion gallons annually for that single country. Data centers in the United States use an estimated 449 million gallons per day = 164 billion gallons/year.

Oh, good, then it will achieve the same kind of silence about water usage once it achieves parity or surpasses the golf courses that don't generate anything close to the outrage heroin for social media sloganeers.

They represent the naked rapacity of the brutally rich. They are inefficient, environmentally destructive, regressive, and serve nobody but AI overlords who are themselves grotesquely inefficient. The people are supposed to lose everything so that the brutally rich can remain stupid.

Precisely Adam. There are also the lies that data centers bring large numbers of jobs and boost the local economy. A massive data center brings about 75 jobs. Mostly routine tech work (cabling, installation and deinstallation). A few engineers and security. Most get state-offered tax breaks.

Stealing land and water, polluting and raising electric bills, consolidating power toward an authoritarian surveillance state, all while it endlessly steals people's creations without a cent back. What the fuck is there to like exactly?

Don't know. Perhaps, data centers should be planned only for areas where they will be most used. And, water and electric utilities should give them limited subsidies in exchange for free AI use. AI is going to be a subscription service, right? Otherwise where is profit derived from?

I'd say there's a high probability there. I think also that their impact on the natural world and local communities has a part to play. These are individuals with imaginable wealth, with unjustified influence on global affairs, yet their most significant contribution to the world. Suffering!

Let's go let those tech billionaires to put some money and urgency behind clean energy research and build out of electrical grid improvements .

At a very basic human level - it's the water. Back in the dark ages churches were built around proven wells. 1000 of years later things have changed but somehow the whole ai datacentre thing thing has the same feel to it.

That and the lack of consensus with the people who have to live with them and suffer the environmental impact costs. Particularly when government and capital are neglecting even the basics required for a minimal quality of life. Appalling and immoral.

I don’t know what was said on that podcast-but they are hated because they are being built off of our tax money, they will poison our land, air, water….they are pushing people out of their homes. And when it is all said and done, it will all be to benefit not the MANY, but a FEW insane oligarchs.

They represent the fact that a few people in this country can do whatever they want-no matter how many people they harm or kill in the process. They have deregulated they have made available our birthright of land and a healthy environment in the United States. They have sold off our birthright.

Yes, water and power play a key role. But look at Trumps favorability polling in low 30s. Most MAGA have abandoned him when his policies hit their wallets not before.

They also have too much Money, and their beliefs are too extreme, being almost entirely malign and self-centred. So when they spend their almost endless Money in Politics, it is almost never to support people who want to make other people's lives better, and almost always to

Shocking that 80% of data centres are in London. What a good way to drive people out of London. Specially with Heathrow expansion and a falling apart water supply with Thames water

Here in Alberta they are hated not only because of big tech but also the water usage in an already drought stricken province, electricity usage, pollution from gas fired generators and the side effect from the noise…as well as the underhanded way they are being rammed through

They are also hated because they are actually intended for surveillance for the general population and because they will deplete surrounding areas of water and other resources. This is also yet another way to funnel more money to the very wealthy. We do not need these data centers. Fight back!!!

No, they're massively hated because they guzzle water in already drought stricken communities that can't afford to spare any, and they dump toxic waste and bacteria into local ecosystems and watersheds.

Yep. I hate data centers too. Why so many of them for complexes that are huge?? Why??????? I don't want to hear $$$, I want to know the technical reason. Can't these huge places handle more than 1 neighborhood at a time?? 🤔

“Give us your land, your electricity, your water, your tax breaks and your patience—and someday you’ll benefit from all the amazing technology we’re building.”

The massive resources needed to operate data centers, all that water and electricity, the pollution they create, the insistence on tax breaks and write-offs at community expense - and for what? To create memes? Fake nudes? And then update the hardware with the latest new chips? No.

That's only a small part of it, honestly. The biggest reason is that they're passing their financial obligations quite literally onto the rest of us while they poison the air, water, and earth around us. They're massively hated for the harm they cause without paying a dime for the privilege.

i think nobody that is a “regular” citizen wants data centers - at least in the scale that these oligarchs want to build them. data centers are necessary for the internet to function, so it’s not like zero is a solution. force them to wait until they have modular nuclear reactors

They will destroy the earth in the condition that they are running, today! The math /science / technology is not fully worked out yet! It’s being pushed strictly for profit $$$ B I L L I O N A I R E S!

Yes to all of the above. Serious concerns: noise, water & electricity use and what they're costing use. Environmental damage. Fed., State, local governments forces them on us and against our will.

I agree, but I hate them because they want to be subsidized with our taxes. They want to use all the water they can. They also want the citizens near them pay more for their utilities. All that and making more money then they could possibly use

I think it is a survival imperative that we mercilessly eviscerate the entire oligarchy, particularly the tech broligarchy, by any means necessary. Object lessons must be made to horrify future generations.

AI also makes students lazy and harms learning since they don't need study for homework; they use up massive amounts of increasingly scarce resources like electricity and fresh water; they plagiarize the work of artists and writers without paying royalties...just a few other reasons that AI is hated

Entirely depends on how AI is used. Studies (like Bastani) show that when students use raw GenAI as an answer key (cognitive bypass), unassisted test scores drop. However, when used with guardrails as a Socratic tutor, it improves understanding and retention. My comparison stands.

Today, I saw a news segment on NBC that reported Amazon and other AI companies are buying up older, rare books so that AI can train on actual written content. An Apple air tag was placed inside a large book order, showing the ultimate destination was Amazon‼️ Books get destroyed.😮😳🤬

It's amazing that you got 7k likes for that slop. Are you trying to make people prefer AI out of spite? It obviously does NOT represent those things... The computer is supposed to be the worker... Duh... "richer and richer off our back". For your sake, I hope you paid for those likes.

I agree. This is a problem. It’s emotional. We COULD regulate the crap out of them: require them to build on already industrial land, use desalinated recycled water, power with solar, and their own wind turbines, but EMOTIONALLY, it’s all about the ban.

You're using one of two primary ones *right now* with that post, and a host of secondary co-lo and relay locations. Online banking? Visiting, you know, the INTERNET? Online shopping? Academics?

Brian Ragle@vagabondvisions.bsky.social

80% of current #datacenter compute is for non-AI things like website hosting, content delivery, SaaS for enterprise, education, and social media. #Bluesky uses two primary datacenters in Santa Clara CA and Ashburn VA. Every post you make goes through one of them. Info dump 🪡 coming up. 1/5

Bitey@jsherman999.bsky.social

the mild hysteria over DCs has shaken my confidence in people on my side almost always being pragmatic, numbers- oriented DCs can cause horrible local problems, but not if municipalities apply their own rules on env studies. Globally DCs are a rounding error compared with aviation or agriculture

Don't be silly. We need them to find better ways of persuading people to buy things that they don't need and didn't want. Also more effective ways for politicians to lie to the public.

Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services, and MS Azure are THE major hyperscalers-cloud providers. The data centers power their clouds. They are quietly behind MOST of the apps you use daily like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, banking, maps, rideshares, smart homes, email, on demand sports, video calls, and more.

It's a tradeoff, right? We live in the era of Varuca Salt. Don't care how, I want it now! OK. You can have the whole world in your pocket, but it comes at a cost.

The fact that we're using them now doesn't explain the current building explosion. The net works just fine right now. THAT is what has people on edge. Why do we suddenly need so many of these, without considering their environmental impacts or surveillance capabilities?

Agreed. Outside of practical medical applications the ordinary person neither needs or wants AI yet it's being forced on us by the Billionaire Tech Bros(who will be the only ones to benefit from it) &to Hell with the planet which is already burning. F-off with your muscle-bound memes of Musk& Trump

It’s the sucking up resources & raising Electric rates The pollution The noise pollution Nobody has turned a profit & insane debt spending & it could all be obsolete in 10 years given chip innovation they are such assholes about it When it all goes bankrupt we get left with the check

Why do the biggest tech companies in the world, with huge market cap and always bragging about their numbers and profits, have to secretly make deals and lie or deceive the communities they are looking to build in??? Why do the locals have to pay for the infrastructure and electricity upgrades? Why

They consume enormous amounts of water and energy while giving no benefits in return. They are also an environmental threat to water and air quality.

It's a good question. People tend to dislike change, as well as distrust government and the wealthy. But, many don't even recognize they were already slaves to the religion they were indoctrinated into as children.

And they represent the new absence of privacy and an intrusive fascist state of constant surveillance. They are using precious natural resources and we pay the price. They employ robots and not people. And they have nothing to add to the human experience but addiction to devices.

'Security Industry Specialist Tells All ' 1 hr. 1 min. Search: Derrick Robinson interview with Bryan Kofron. Data centers are mass surveillance and population control facilities. Listen to the non-consenting test subjects, #TargetedIndividuals for once. We've been reaching out for decades.

They cut cushy deals on their local & state taxes. Deals on the water & electricity they use. That's passed on to consumers. They don't hire as many local people as they swore they would. Usually, they only employ a few dozen techs & security guards, most of them underpaid by contracting companies.

Data centers represent the rapid expansion of the Surveillance State, and are needed to aggregate and process the explosion of personal data being collected by roadside cameras, cellphone trackers, device sniffers, social media crawlers, facial recognition systems, and public records.

Thats part of it, but also they're stealing our water and power and destroying the environment to not fix the actual issue. We aren't trailing China in AI because we don't have enough data centers. We're trailing China in AI because tech bros don't want to pay programmers what they're worth.

Plus they use power, use water, make endless noise, push their way into communities and bulldoze open space for giant eyesores, pollute, and are generally an awful nuisance, all while providing very little actual benefit to the community, country and planet.

AI is being shoved down our throats at every turn. Phones, computers, and there is on "would you like AI installed?", it just turns up. Every time you open a file, some little fucker pops up and ask "would you like me to summaries this for you?" No, I'd like you to fuck off. DCs & AI, not a fan.

Maybe. They are invading people’s properties, farming communities and basically throwing up a industrial site miles long. It has nothing to do with who’s building them it has to do that they are urbanizing farm land If they built them like other countries do to blend in with the land, plus let’s be

Data centres could be useful. But make them totally self sufficient and don’t build them in residential areas. Drinking water is already a scarce resource, so why use it for cooling data centres? How hard is that?
