A key asymmetry of this era of American politics and how it’s covered is that Trump is expected to do bad and corrupt things, so when he does it barely qualifies as news. But Dems are expected to be beyond reproach, so anything that seems even slightly suspect is a huge scandal.

Old quote, often attrib. to Winston Churchill: "Always vote conservative. If you're a liberal and scandal hits, people will say, 'HAH! Your idol has feet of sand." But if you're conservative and do something NICE, they will be forced to say, "Gee! He wasn't such a bastard after all!"

Familiar to anyone who’s ever studied gender politics, dysfunctional family relationships, domestic violence, etc. The victim is always responsible and the abuser is never held to any accountability.

Truth is that 24hr honest news channels are now unsustainable. The ad revenue is drying up so they need to create ever more controversy to retain a shrinking viewership. They literally have become nothing more than another reality TV "entertainment" show looking for eyeballs. #MSMJumpedTheShark

This is because the press thinks their job is to look for a middle ground in which they respond with similar levels of concern to both sides, which they measure by how much each side complains about their coverage. They are ignoring their primary job, which is much more clear: to report the truth.

I wrote a similar post: But tRump can say or do anything and gets a pass because everything he says is so scandalous and egregious it’s become normalized. When Biden gets a toe out of the status quo, heads explode and hair catches on fire.

Lottsa clear and understandable descriptors which distinguish one party from the other…60 years ago my father reduced it to these words: GOP policies take from the middle class… Dem policies are giving, caring for, and supporting the poor & middle class.

Likewise, Democrats play by the rules and norms, to a fault (Garland) whereas Republicans violate them with abandon (McConnell, Barr, Thomas, Alito, Roberts). There's a reason why the GOP, which consistently has broadly unpopular policies, remains the dominant political party.

Because as a society, we’ve collectively accepted Republicans/conservatives are bad actors. So when they do the bare minimum, it’s celebrated. When Dems/liberals/progressives don’t live up to an absurd standard, it’s a moral failing.

IMO we need a *moon shot effort* and a GENIUS ad agency To figure out how to combat Trump’s firehose of lies & disinformation — given a poorly educated, gullible, and self-serving electorate with little time, attention span, or interest in ferreting out truth or understanding complex issues.

We need to change that reality. Dems shouldn’t do bad and corrupt things, but Dems do need to quit worrying about being beyond reproach. And when we respond appropriately to a corrupt administration, we need to own that response proudly.

I think Biden's action was bad. BUT, Trump calls it an abuse of power. The media characterizes it as a miscarriage of justice. Did I miss the media saying all charges and convictions dropped against Trump was a miscarriage of justice? It was, it is, and the media is complicit.

This is what is happening in the UK too. 14 years of Tory scandals, but the new Labour government gets criticised for all. Although I thought Starmer would have seen that and made sure his cabinet was beyond reproach. Terrible state of affairs.

Similar to what we saw on the campaign trail in the recent election.. Kamala/Tim had to be flawless and when they weren't they were held accountable.. Old Don/Hillbilly were essentially lawless, but the media still highlighted and praised them..

Exactly. The rules only apply to democrats. Trump is literally changing the nature of our democracy every moment of the day but if a democrat does something in response to Trump that is not normal then the media freaks out. Biden pardoned Hunter to protect him not from consequences but from Trump.

Part of this is that the Democrats bring a copy of Robert’s Rules of Order to a knife fight and the other side is bringing an AR15. Meanwhile other critics focus on which edition of Robert’s is most correct and so stay out of the fight.

Bullseye. And the media is still entertaining the notion that Trump will have some limits because Matt Gaetz stepped down. That’s the same bait-and-switch BS that Bush pulled nominating Harriet Myers for SCOTUS so Nazi Alito would look palatable by comparison.

And. The. Mainstream press. Is. Smart. Enough. To. Get. This!!!! Hanlon’s razor doesn’t apply here. The elite political press is putting their fingers on the scale and they KNOW IT. Especially at the executive level.

Exactly, which raises the question of why anyone still covers anything Trump says that doesn't directly address his malignant plans, since we already know anything else he or his sycophants say is propaganda, misinformation or outright lies. "News" coverage shouldn't normalize it.

Stop already everyone with the handwringing and absolute nonsense about "this tarnishes his legacy." Let's keep our focus on the incompetent and dangerous proposed appointees and the upcoming harm coming to everyone. Enough about Hunter Biden.

Yep. And the D’d have internalized it so when a D breaks a norm he gets blasted by the media, the D’s and the R’s! Bipartisanship! The public loves bipartisanship and thinks it’s a stamp of credibility. When the R’s break a norm? Only the D’s yell about it and it looks partisan and suspect.

He’s successfully pulled off a ‘normalisation of deviancy’. He’s done a real number on his supporters & all others engaged in various forms of apologia. WT Vollman has some choice words on the mechanisms by which dictators perpetrate and normalise abuse in his ‘Rising Up and Rising Down’ books:

Abuse as a mechanism of control; desensitising ppl to the bizarre, immoral and brutal via gradualism; using propaganda to frame his damages as benevolent; a psychology of fear via threats & public spectacles; turning personal cruelty into banal bureaucratic, institutionalised abuse…

…involving ordinary ppl in the abuse to foster complicity, and dilute all personal accountability; while presenting all of this destructive, immoral nonsense as being in the service of some higher ideal. How far along are we?

It is complete manufactured junk by the MSM. There are two standards and it is only getting worse. The Dems need to continue to follow the rule of law but we have to start seeking out the loopholes that exist and exploit them. If not, the slide toward fascism will continue.

Another thought: When Dems in the '50s and '60s were working for civil rights and other "liberal" causes, they leaned toward using moral terms. Made sense, still does, but IF in a secular society you start telling others your position is morally superior, there will be blowback.

Was the "Moral Majority" movement, the push of southern evangelicals to become repressive-right-wing bullies in part a response to feeling accused & not being able to make the move? Sure, Nixon used that in Southern Strategy, but Dems in '60s were on a serious "WE are the righteous" kick.

I was brought up Dem and moderate, but was scolded all over by those more liberal (and richer, BTW) for not being a good member of the new clique. Rankled. Almost turned me around. So when someone says "They go low; we go high" I feel that as a claim of superiority and have the "low" reaction.

True. But another asymmetry I see is educational. The hand-written signs of MAGA are almost invariably full of spelling and grammar errors, suggestive of lack of good basic education, whereas signs of libs aren't. The educational level of media has also dropped markedly from 1950s.

Republicans and Corporate Media have always, ALWAYS, put Democrats on a different level, a higher level, so when a Dem does or says something they think is too much on their low level they bitch about it. Trump pardoned Roger Smith, Mike Flynn & Jared's father for gods sake!

The Michael Flynn pardon boils my blood more than anything in politics. That man plead guilty to being a unregistered foreign agent of two different countries, while holding the highest national security clearance in the nation. He is despicable.

Yes! I was scrolling instagram and I got an MSNBC super cut of all the times Biden said he would not pardon with a town of “tsk tsk tsk.” How dare they. We don’t care. Fight back for once! New democratic leadership!

bro it's been this way since the fucking 80s. and I'll fucking say it again. I better not hear a FUCKING. WORD. about Clinton getting a goddamn blowjob after TWO MILLION GODDAMN AMERICANS FUCKING <DIED.>

Which I think is why people are just turning off the television. Turn off, Tune out, Drop Out. Don’t give the media bastards clicks or subscribers or ratings. Of course I’m not speaking of all media, you of course.

The issue is no one should be above the law. No person should be pardonable. But since it’s part of the American tradition for Presidents to pardon people, it’s “normal”. Pardoning 237 felons who were guilty is far, far worse than a president protecting his son from blood thirsty tyrants. #uspoli

"The issue is no one should be above the law. No person should be pardonable." No, is not the issue. Although it might be your preference, the US constitution has it differently, nevertheless. On the other hand: A person may decide not to accept a pardon, in which case it does not take effect.

Has anyone ever done that? Those of us who believe in law, order, (social) justice and good governance believe this. Pardons r not part of our legal tradition in Canada either. But, some circumstances call for exceptions. The uniqueness of Hunter Biden’s persecution by hyper-partisan tyrants is one.

Especially when Trump appointee David Weiss reneged on Hunter's plea deal and the MSM didn't give a damn. It makes me furious that the MSM has been a major factor in destruction of justice in this country. Was there any outcry when Trump pardoned hundreds of evildoers on his way out? Of course not.

It’s the up is down & down is up syndrome. Good is evil & evil is good. So what does that make a Christian? Those who claim to be aren’t & those who don’t but act so and get mistreated.

So in this way they spend as many hours with scandals from both sides… sure they barely glance on Trumps hundreds of scandals but can spend tons of time on a single Biden blunder. We’re not asking for equal total time, we’re asking for equal time per scandal based on it’s relevance

Because trump was able to tie up the courts & end the cases against him, we’ll never know the full extent of corruption in his first term. But, in the coming months, if you are one of the hated minority, those ‘both sides journalists’ will have no room in their attics, I promise.

Spot on. Low expectations for Trump normalize bad behavior, while Democrats are scrutinized for every misstep. This double standard warps accountability and distracts from real issues. Let’s demand integrity across the board—not just where it’s convenient.

I think that any Dem going on MSM must call this nonsense out. Even better would be to call it out and then let them know they will no longer deal with them. Let the viewers know they will be going to xyz as they report accurately and are not cowards.

One way to neutralize that is for (D) to stop claiming to be better than (R). That is on them. That is the reason why (D)s are expected to be beyond reproach... because they claim to be.

Really? We couldn’t imagine? The media did this exact same thing DURING the 2016 election cycle. “Omg, her emails.” “Omg, Benghazi.” And Dems and the GOP alike gobbled that shit up like it was the last slice of pumpkin pie on the day after Thanksgiving. This is why we ended up in this place.

You said the exact same thing I said, except your used Hilary instead of Biden as your example. Afghanistan too got wall to wall coverage, and everything Trump has done over the last 5 years has just gotten a quick blurb

This has to change because it is obvious the assertion portion of the American population want the chaos and if the Dems wish to win next time, they need to have just enough chaos to make the mega people feel that the Dems have a pair of balls

Yeah but there's a way to stop that. Its called having the balls to stand up to bullying. Cuz that's what it is that's happening by media - they bully anyone not stupid. They continue to do it cuz they go low, we go high. It's amazing how hi they are and we're even lower.

Sounds about right. The way Trump has managed to desensitize his followers to his misdeeds is the real story. Sexual assault, and treason are now seen as societal norms when it’s members of the GOP.

And no one in their right mind thinks this is rational, let alone legitimate journalistic practice. It was developed to justify giving preferential coverage to Republicans and has reached its peak as full-blown propaganda for Trump.

Totally agree. The next four years will show just how much of a sociopath Trump truly is-if you can think it, he could easily do it! No checks or balances now!

Plus when republicans are hypocrites or liars it's now a norm for them. Unfortunately voters don't see it because they get "facts" from social media. Not sure how you win an election without lying to the voters. No one is held accountable for lying.
