Sen. Roger Wicker: "This nomination is unconventional, just like that New York developer who rode down the escalator in 2015 to announce his candidacy for president. That may be what makes Mr. Hegseth an excellent choice."

Wicker: "Regarding his personal conduct, Mr. Hegseth has admitted to falling short, as we all do from time to time. It is noteworthy that the vast majority of the accusations leveled at Mr. Hegseth have come from anonymous sources."

Sen. Jack Reed: "I do not believe you are qualified to meet the overwhelming demands of this job. We must acknowledge the concerning public reports... the totality of your own writings & alleged conduct would disqualify any service member form holding any leadership position ..."

Reed notes that a report detailing Hegseth's alleged egregious financial mismanagement of a veterans group has not been made available to any government agencies

Reed: "You are the ninth nominee for secretary of defense that I have had the honor to consider. I have voted in favor of all your predecessors, including those in the first Trump administration. Unfortunately, you lack the character, composure, & competence to hold the position"

Wicker begins his questioning: "Let's get into this allegation about, um, sexual assault, inappropriate workplace behavior, alcohol abuse, and financial mismanagement ..." Hegseth claims it's a "coordinated smear campaign orchestrated in the media against us."

Wicker shuts down Reed's request for a second round of questions (second rounds are quite standards during confirmation hearings of this sort)

Reed: "All of your public comments don't talk meritocracy. They talk about liberal democratic efforts that are destroying the military, 'those people are our enemies.' That's not meritocracy. That's a political view. Your goal as I see it emerging is to politicize the military"

REED: Would you explain what a jagoff is? HEGSETH: I don't think I need to REED: Why? HEGSETH: Because the men & women watching understand REED: Perhaps some of my colleagues don't understand HEGSETH: It would be a jag officer who puts his or her own priorities in front of the warfighters

Hegseth is not from Pittsburgh. And he's a former Army officer. It's a military term to label lawyers he doesn't like. Not widely circulated, but can be found among military members. Do a search of the term in r/military Reddit. Many hits there. And yes, he's unqualified for the position.

Like ... Someone who puts his alcohol consumption and womanizing above the sanctity of marriage and his responsibilities to his children, Pete Hegseth? Or is that a jag-ass? Or just a really sad drunk morally compromised man who needs therapy?

Democrats: Hey, did you mean it in the fall of 2024 when you called anyone who isn't a Trump supporter your enemy and said that women don't belong in the military? Hegseth: The media is dishonest.

Republicans: Hey, you think you might want to filibuster with a bunch of jingoistic, rah-rah America, yay-Jesus bullshit for about a minute and a half? Hegseth: You bet. AMERICA!!!! PRAISE JESUS!!!

During this testimony, I kept thinking to myself well, Lindsay Graham was a commissioned officer in the JAG Corps. And then I also can also appreciate that Lindsay Graham is indeed a jagoff. LOL.... So two things can be true!

As we get deeper into Hegseth's confirmation hearing, let me say that if you appreciate this thread, please support my work by signing up for my newsletter. Independent media will be vital during the second Trump administration and paid subscribers make my work possible.

Aaron, I followed you on Twitter, I follow you on BlueSky and I follow you on Substack. I read your free newsletter. I wish I could do more but I’m one of those trying to live on SS for less than $1,000 a month. It doesn’t leave me anything, so I get my news from you and YouTube. I trust you. Thanks

Shaheen: "Should we take it that you believe that the two women on this committee who have served honorably and with distinction made our military less effective and less capable?"

Do these declining "standards" also apply to male soldiers? The fact that this damaged man is even there, with considerable Republican support, is a stain on our republic. I thought Republicans were all about a strong military and national security?

you are so damn right. The "standards" are now damaged starting with Trump. Republicans can nominate the lowest of the low. Let's hope for our sake the country doesn't fall apart but if it does, Trump will be in the history books as an example of an abject standard failure.

What data, research, expertise does he bring to this question? He talked to some people and they said standards were bad. 🤦🏼‍♀️He is not qualified to say anything about standards when he hasn’t and won’t commit to upholding any standards. My head is going to explode.

Fir this dude to reference the “erosion of standards” is just next level blame shifting and hypocrisy. God, we need tougher Democrats. Way tougher. No more niceties. Niceties will not do us any good in philosophical warfare.

Shaheen points out that Hegseth's views on women in the military magically became more enlightened after he was nominated for defense secretary

Hegseth implies that standards have been eroded and that women can't live up to them. He emphasizes carrying heavy things, which is harder for many women. Oddly, he doesn't say anything about endurance, at which women excel. Nor is anything said about war's increasing emphasis on digital aspects.

I really wish someone would say, "Two months ago you said women should not be allowed in combat roles, and today you say women SHOULD be allowed in combat roles. I'm sorry, but I'm confused. Were you lying then or are you lying now?"

Each and every nominee is absolutely going to lie through their teeth, saying whatever they believe/have been told will get them in the position, and then do whatever tf they/trump/putin/musk want to do. There is zero doubt about this

SHAHEEN: Will you commit to preserving the women, peace, and security law at the DoD? HEGSETH: I will commit to reviewing it SHAHEEN: Well since former President Trump signed the law, I hope he agrees with you
