"So the tariff is paid in this country by the importer, is that right?" -- Eugene Robinson guides Scott Bessent into acknowledging that tariffs are in fact paid in the United States, not by foreign governments

And we're all supposed to believe that US importers will act like charities and will not pass on their extra costs to their US customers. Because that's what companies do in a capitalist society, yes, not pass on costs through their pricing?

This is an effort to bankrupt small businesses. There is no way they can possibly compete with the big guys. It's up to us to patronize our local shops and keep them alive. Once they're gone, the big guys will have no reason to keep prices down. We will be at their mercy for everything.

Walmart is a business. If they make "BILLIONS OF DOLLARS" that's free enterprise. The money pays wages. But the federal Treasury does NOT exist to make money and Trump keeps gloating about $billions in tariffs going into the Treasury. He's trying to oust Powell. Trump wants access to the money.

He thinks he’s above us. We don’t understand big words like import and export. He says the truth out loud like it’s too complicated for dumb Americans to comprehend. We understand, completely. You’re raping American businesses and letting them take the blame for raping us. Rape is your game.

Anathema for any repub to suggest taxes could/should be increased. So to get around it, use tariffs and encourage false belief that the importer pays it. Therebye, raise revenue and leave their clueless base with the idea they're not paying it...until they realize they are.

Please tell me there was a follow-up question to connect the dots, that the importer who pays the tax, will increase the price to recoup that tax from the consumer who buys the product. Why why did he end there. Or did you just cut it off.

We could buy our Brazilian coffee from Argentina ☕😁 The exporter might decide to reduce its price to cover part of the tariff. On the other hand it might just decide to sell to someone else. The importer may or may [not] pass the increase on to the consumer. Ah yes US companies want to lose money.

Bessent snivels and avoids answering this simple question. Basically refuses to answer. He says “Check is written to the person who receives it at the dock.” That is not true, and Eugene Robinson has to ASSUME he meant to say “check is written BY the person.” Bessent is unable to NOT LIE.

In well regulated competitive free enterprise economies profits tend toward very low %s. An exporter in another country doesn't have any room to just absorb anything. Eventually all costs will end up on the buyer. Econ 101 and they all know it or have willfully forgotten what they were taught.

‪ Yes the argument is that tariffs by foreign countries raise prices on American made goods but that tariffs on foreign made goods do not raise prices in America on those goods. Some might see this as a contradiction and others may see it as bullshit.

Bessent either has never run a business (no way any exporter could cover the cost of a 50% American import tariff or even 10% when the whole business model is built around the importer paying the tariff), or he does know and he's just a sad pathetic bootlicking woosy liar covering up for Trump.

So big corporations either on the exporting or importing side, might decide to "eat the tariff" and shrink their profits to inflate Trump's ego. That won't last too long Scott. These wealthy corporations might decide to donate to the Dems. They're in it for the money, and nothing else.

Bessent is off the news shows for 30 days post interview stating usa pays tariffs. Poor guy should have brought Nutlick who has no clue or care so he would never admit it. Now that Nutlick is face of tariffs, news, go after the chortling fool.

Foreign companies in the United States will pay a tariff to sell in the US, which will raise the price for Americans, and Trump will write them a check? Who wins? Foreign countries? No. Americans? No. The US government? No. 🤔

In fairness, all Bessent is doing is explaining the "incidence" of the tax. Robinson is focused on the meaningless question of who writes the check. Equally in fairness, Bessent is bullshitting (as polite as I can put it) about who the incidence ultimately will fall on. The US consumer will pay...

2/ the bulk of the tax as the US importers push the burden up the production chain. I imagine a cup of Joe will be one of the first things to go up in price since Brazil is a huge supplier, and Brazil plans to reroute exports to other places.

Tariffs also cause domestic producers to raise their prices. They have an opportunity to do so when their products face less competitors. So in essence - consumers still pay more for their products no matter the producer is domestic or international.

Tough when you come up against someone smarter than you, eh Bessent. That smug smile is a sign of defeat. Keep lying for the fraudster president and you will have many more moments like this.

She describes Bessent pretty well, doesn't she? Chauncey, on the other hand, had an innocent, God-like wisdom about him. One of my favorite films, this one.

And Seller's last, wasn't it? Brilliant film. Chauncey was a sympathetic character. I wonder how Bessent got so damn wealthy - the best schools, the right connections - and being a white man. So far he has had to admit who actually ends up paying for these tariffs, and the taking SS private! Dunce.

I wish just one reporter had the balls to ask this question to Trump himself: “Mr. President, when are you going to tell the people that it’s Americans who pay 100% of these tariffs? All the money coming in to the U.S. treasury is paid by Americans - it’s a tax on we the American people, correct?”

Exactly! The Dems should be shouting it from the rooftops every time Trump bloviates about his big tariff windfall . . . PEOPLE - all that money Trump is bragging about - he stole it from YOU - it came out of YOUR pocket! Wouldn’t you rather have kept that money for yourself & family⁉️🤦‍♀️

They have a million times. There were so many protests at the capital it was crazy. The GOP had the votes and while we met with Democratic Senators the Republicans hid. They, and we, screamed it from the rooftops. They were so successful at ‘ othering ‘ no one believes only their own hate

And then the business can pass it on to the consumer, quietly go bankrupt, or take some middle road that leaves the consumer with a higher price & the company less profitable. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

He’s done Canada a favour our government is building new trade partners which will make us independent of US trade. And as a people Canadians (the enemies of the US) stopped buying US wine & whiskey; we’ve stopped vacationing in the US no one visits fascist countries #CanadaStrong #ElbowsUp

Bessent's problem is that he's not that bright and Eugene Robinson is VERY smart and can run circles around that moronic, lying, piece of shit, Bessent.

Scott needs to read the room, do the honourable thing - resign, go home spend time with his husband and kids and mull his future out of the political realm. The only positive thing I can say about Bessent is that he at least is not quite and loathsome as Richard Grinnell.

The essential purpose of these tariffs is to kill imports into the United States from targeted countries, under the delusion that American companies will start making identical products here and American customers will buy them. Can you spell “champagne”?

They are still trying to get Americans to believe that it is not us that will pay the tariffs. Those who vote for the dicktator are gonna find out soon enough when prices go up. Unfortunately, just like during covid, those not impacted by tariffs will still raise their prices bc they can.

They get good salaries, office deductions, expense accounts, free meals, subsidized meals, and insider trading tips. No wonder they cling so hard to power and work so hard to repeat the lies. It has become too lucrative. Soon they'll be raiding the treasury, once they get rid of Jerome Powell.

The Peter principle is a concept in management developed by Laurence J. Peter which observes that “people in a hierarchy tend to rise to "a level of respective incompetence": This is America made great by Trump.

And laser focused on being delivered to a certain group of Americans - who are about find out the real truth as the effects of tariffs hit their credit cards & bank accounts when shopping clicks into high gear at the end of Aug.

Just say it fool! The US citizens pay the tax directly to the federal government so they can build ballrooms, hire incompetent dummies and send Vance cross dressing on holiday and Donny cheating at golf. ORR we could pay workers and they could spend money how they like. Like actual freedom…

Sadly, I still think using terms like “the importer” is too high-fallutin for most Americans to grasp. He needed to say, “The American importers like Walmart and Amazon, right? And then they may choose to pass this cost to the American consumer in many instances, correct?”

I honestly believe Trump perceives the Treasury as "his" (like a king would) and it's one of the reasons he wants to get rid of Jerome Powell. Treasury transactions are electronic. DOGE hackers are in government now. If they can find a way to embezzle from the Treasury via hacking, they 100% will.

I can’t believe we are 7 months into this hellscape and we are still dealing with the most basic of lies and falsehoods. It’s like being on a committee with an ever-increasing number of agenda items but we just can’t get past the basic ground rules of the first topic.

What a joker! Brazil is not going to lower the price and take a loss, and the importer is not going to absorb the cost...we have never seen corporations do that. Therefore, that is why I am paying much more for my coffee beans. I seem to be paying that.

Bessent is incredibly misinforming here. If the exporter reduces its price, it just changes the basis of the amount of tariff calculated. The tariffs, even if reduced are still paid for 100% by the U.S. based importer. Changing the price before only impact the amount of tariffs paid.

It's been a while since I took macroecon, but also couldn't countries just find a buyer who has a lower tariff, rather than lowering prices? Isn't that how markets work? (I do get that the US buys at a higher volume than other trading partners)

True. The point, in theory however, would be that reduced price + tariff = previous price with no tariff. It’s still shitty policy because it relies on corporations lowering profits, counter to their very purpose. And when it’s a product we CAN’T make here, they have no incentive to do so.

Great point, but my initial reaction to Bessent’s claim about the exporter reducing their price to maintain market share was, “Name ONE!” Seems like just another LIE. Meanwhile groceries and prices for everything are going up. They are pushing a FANTASY!

I went grocery shopping today and about died of sticker shock. Meat is becoming unaffordable. Coffee is unaffordable. LNG is unaffordable. Gas prices are rising. Rent is rising. Drugs are rising. Health Care is unaffordable.

Watched him squirm with Joe Scarborough and then Eugene Robinson led him down the path to, we’ll, yeah, Americans pay the tariffs and NO exporters are not absorbing 50% hits to profits when their profit levels are 10%. Duh. Bessent knows better. Sold his soul to be close to the throne.

It's my understand that some goes to CBP (and a couple of other departments involved in collecting/administrating) but that most of it goes into the Treasury. Consider this. Trump is trying to get rid of the gatekeeper (Jerome Powell). DOGE installed hackers. Treasury transactions are electronic.

I mean, you dont need to even ask this question. We, as USA citizens, have seen prices jump 25%, 30%, 50% OVERNIGHT since Trump started this. You would have to be a moron to wonder why everything is suddenly WAY MORE EXPENSIVE RIGHT NOW than it was under Biden.

Well done. One last thing to note - And every time the administration touts the $ billions in revenue flowing into the US Treasury from tariffs those dollars are coming from consumers or companies in the US. So these are taxes being paid by those parties and not foreign countries. Correct.

I spoke to many MAGA on Twitter who had dropped out of college, usually in their first year. When I asked them why, the answer I got was, "My professors were stupid. They didn't know anything." The same users didn't know how to use a search engine. How can they research false claims without it?

But Bessent avoids actually saying who pays. He makes a “mistake” and says “the check is paid TO the person who receives it...” which Robinson has to correct to “BY the person” and Bessent grudgingly says Yes, but never actually says the importer pays. These people are so smarmy!

Yeah despite what "Old Stinky Butt" (Donald Trump) says those tariffs are paid by the importer and in almost all cases are passed at least partially, in many cases totally to the consumer which is you and me Bubba! So we're all looking at additional TAXES on almost everything we buy! Thanks Trump!

His daddy bought the degree and he got credit for working in real estate with him. In his military school he was low in the class and his father paid for him to lead the school military parade. A life of no work and no consequences built on never hacking down from a lie

Study the FUCKING BOSTON TEA PARTY and why there was an American Revolution in the first fucking place. We learned that in fucking elementary schools in the 60s here in Southern California. Where to these fuckwads come from? It can't all be home schooling

On balance, Trump is completely insane, but my question about this issue is • Does he believe it's true simply because he wants it to be? ...or... • Does he believe that by sheer force of will he can make people believe what he wants them to, despite the truth?

Host: *points out a river to Scott Bessent* "Do you agree water is wet?" Bessent: "Well, um, it could be that temperatures suddenly drop below zero and the water becomes hard and, um, it also could be that somebody else comes along and, er, drinks the river and then there's really no water at all."

I love Eugene Robinson! Bessent is a liar and weasel, but there is something else I can't put my finger on that is completely off with him. Surprised that trimpy would allow such an effeminate man in his regime. His alma mater made him sad. 😭

In Michigan, a HS Economics class is mandatory for graduation from HS, BUT can be substituted with a class in the trades or a business class in the state’s curriculum. Apparently this is widespread (beyond just MI) and has negative consequences to understanding Economic principles — Who’d a known?
