pretty damn close to a 100% top-to-bottom bluesky-free bluesky ✅ indie pds (lots) ✅ indie relay (mine + others now!) ✅ indie jetstream (mine + many more (optional)) 🌀 indie appview (AppViewLite has some issues, @futur.blue's should work, more in progress) ✅ indie client (@aviva.gay's deer.social !)

alright the work is cut out AppViewLite's own web view works really well, but i can't get very far using its XRPC endpoints. seems like deer was doing everything right though!

I just went through all the missing XRPC methods required to login or view the timeline and implemented them (or stubbed them). Now it should be possible to use social-app on top of AppViewLite.

I'm curious what the minimum set of those you actually need are, i want to get them implemented for market, and have an appView running off my raspberry pi

Is there independent did:plc infrastructure? I remember hearing that the PLC index would be a tough part to decentralize. Forgive me if the question doesn’t make sense, I’m not super familiar with all the ATProto details.

no. did:web exists but is a cop-out answer heh. mirrors exist but can only mirror. the future of did:plc is for it to be spun out to an independent org with multi-party governance, at least this is bluesky’s current stated intent iirc.

i think the current state is: they have a huge-scale dataplane built on scylladb that's closed source (and very deployment-specific), but all the rest of the appview stuff, including a postgres dataplane implementation, is open source. not _easy_ to run at the current event rate out of the box, but

One would expect the #IndieSkyWG on the wiki to be fleshed out over time, yes. I'm barely keeping up with Kuba features!!!

hell yeah @edavis.dev did it!!!!!!!!!

pretty cool: deer.social configured to point to a self-hosted bsky appview which reads from a self-hosted relay which subscribes to a self-hosted PDS which is where this "hello world" post originated it's bluesky independent from bluesky

atproto is funny. all of this has been really doable for a while. even without sync1.1, non-archival relays were cheap. imo the low barrier to pds self-hosting is *the* underrated atproto quality. the rest just needs to be possible. wild how much perception about it shifted toward "impossible".

something being "possible" / "impossible" is way less important than something being "done" / "not done" really pleased to see this being done now

although i do think it's huge to finally have an alternative because imo it's important for people to know what a baseline appview looks like without bsky's value adds (cdn, dm's, etc)

Turns out this might be next to impossible if every Mastodon island instance is governed by different rules and many islanders distrust or even despise inhabitants of other islanders. A relay like in atproto, which builds a firehose of all activity in all Mastodon islands is unworkable, unthinkable

>imo the low barrier to pds self-hosting is *the* underrated atproto quality agree so much when i first read about SOLID's concept of pods back in 2021 i knew that had to be the future finding atproto and discovering that a pds was the same thing was incredibly exciting

For me (and I understand this is a limitation of mine, not atproto or PDS) is how to set up a PDS for a domain that also runs i.e. a web server and an email server, how everything interacts, especially the certificate management part. I’ll try to make all this click on my head next holidays season

appview itself has been running well for a few months now, currently on the 5th or 6th rewrite of an indexer that can actually ingest data at live rate though

i believe it generates your timeline on demand at request time, and i don't think it's lossy. as far as i understand, it roughly has: all bsky data *indexed*, and saves *content* for your social network out a few degrees, and fetches the rest lazily.

amazing! @aviva.gay I would love if you could make it so you can switch which AppView instance you're using just like you can switch which constellation instance you're using. It would kind of tie all the decentralization together and make it so you can self-host all of it.

deer.social/profile/did:... yep! thats the vision but no 3rd party appviews you can actually use for this exist yet

🦌≈@aviva.gay

if you have a working appview feel free to try custom-appview.deer-social.pages.dev no motion on github.com/bluesky-soci... yet so this is a cherrypick + a toggle with both overengineered and underengineered validation
