“The future is here, it’s just unevenly distributed” strikes again

this is extremely local, but there's two main shops here that do volunteer and donation based bike outfitting with Pay What You Can pricing to bring rebuilt bikes to as many people as possible it's possible there's something like that in your area mostly I buy and sell used on kijiji

I mean, haha, sorta kinda! it won't be a fancy bike, but for the most part there's more parts and more bikes available than people who pick them up we've been involved in trying to get access to everyone, and materially bikes are often not that expensive to put together

A ringbound sketchbook and a pencil are cheap, portable and effective. You can even get ~*fancy*~ ones (and still be under $100).

Also, I hear some people exist who are really into "birding", whatever that may mean, but sounds kinda hiking-adjacent

yeah! birding is great I will concede that bird *photography* as a hobby variant has some real upfront costs (I want a birding lens so bad but it's hard to justify, that is some pricey glass)

It's funny reading this having just come back from a trip to 🇳🇱 and feeling like every single outing was €100+ for our family of 6… it's a helpful reminder that we DID do things that were cheap/free but those somehow get forgotten among the castles and museums

yeah, I'll definitely concede that being an active tourist in a place is way more expensive than hanging out in your own city even just meals alone - we're pretty good about going to local grocery stores and doing our own thing, but eating out for a week is brutal in some places

on our chicago trip we all but had to eat the cafeteria food at the aquarium / the museums and even for just us two people it was $50+ USD / $70 CAD for the weakest most mediocre sandwich and water they know they've got ya trapped

thrift store, Craigslist, Govdeals, etc might have something that's usable enough for just a couple hundred ebike conversion would probably be a few hundred bucks on top of that?

Uhhh... State and national parks aren't free. Usually cheap, but not free. The local zoo is $28 per person near me. The rest are pretty accurate.

I once went to a corn maze with my friends and one of them disappeared. We waited like an hour and couldn't find him. A creepy old woman laughed & said Jack Punkinhead probably got him. We went to complain & the guy at the stand had no idea who she was and we couldn't find her again either.

oof! haha, that's rough we have a cute korean private room karaoke place that's $10/person/hour and has surprisingly cheap snack service, so it's not too bad for a whole group also it's on top of a bakery and if you're there around closing sometimes there's cheap / free baked goods
