I've always hated sparklers. Even as a kid, I thought they were too volatile to hold.
Plus I needed my hands to cover my ears from all the other screeching fire toys.
GenX friends, we know your parents just handed you sparklers. They didn't have the Consumer Product Safety Commission on their phone like you do now. Maybe if they'd known sparklers burn as hot as a blowtorch they would have reconsidered (maybe). Once we know better, we must do better.
And, just a thought, we never hear stories about the "let kids be kids!" people walking around emergency rooms offering to pay for treatments. It's easy to have a carefree take on safety when you're not sitting in the ER.
I'm a boomer. When I was a kid, a neighbor kid's nightgown caught fire from a sparkler. Fortunately the parents got it out quickly and she was not hurt (that I recall).
Gen X? I'm a millennial and my parents did that lmao. Anyway if I had a kid I wouldn't personally hand them anything that's burning as a toy more or less. It just sends a pretty bad message to them about touching things that are smoldering.
Bringing back childhood memories of my annual sparkler second-degree burns 🔥 🙃
No need to ban the 🎇 as long as the parents remain sober long enough to ensure the safety of their children and fully extinguishing the glowing metal stick so no one steps on it and then doesn't get to go swimming 😬🙄🤭
In the 90's we used to get em from PA or SC
Bottle rocket fights in the street
M80s in sewers and hear the pop on the drain cover. Still have all my fingers thankfully
I wouldn’t say they’re necessarily safer bc they probably burn just as hot, but I learned in Japan that sparklers are way different. Instead of on a stick, they’re on a string and you just hold them still. They’re really delicate!
Someone gave me a star-shaped sparkler as a thank-you once. I'm scared to light it up (been afraid of them since I was a kid), and can't throw it in the trash either bc that seems unsafe.
A year later it's still sitting on a shelf in my kitchen and I don't know how to get rid of it.
Or, here's a nice concept. Pay attention to and teach your kids how to properly handle and respect things that can hurt them. I grew up with them in my hands every year of my life and never even been burned. This is why ppl talk about us getting soft on everything... be responsible ffs
Sometime in the 1960s my mother was badly burned by a sparkler, so she never let me have one. She had to find out the hard way, but now we have CPSC Bluesky👍
Oh, nooo, sparklers! Kinder eggs! The kids might burn themselves! Oh, no! The little dummies might choke on plastic!
But let them choke on their own blood when someone guns them down because the fragile idiots in this country need to feel like real ones with their big gun hobby.
