"prohibition in the united states" has this time lapse map that switches from folksy banjo music to ominous industrial sci-fi for the 15 seconds when alcohol was illegal nationwide

Difficult to quantify the amount of damage done to the country by prohibition just through the lens of criminal gangs and corruption. Not having learned our lesson we prohibited marijuana with the same results

I love how the moral panic spreads across the nation and then after prohibition ends you watch everyone go "well actually that was a very bad idea"

In 2026, it's kind of wild to think about Prohibition in regards to amending, then *unamending*, the Constitution. Any amendment to the Constitution seems impossible these. Much less unamending an amendment.

I grew up in that one blue county in northern Alabama (Madison County, main city Huntsville.) The county to the west, Morgan County, was the home of the largest dry city in the US (Decatur) until the mid 90s.

Kinda weird to include places like Alaska and Hawai'i for the whole thing. There were only 38 states in 1880. Sure, they were territories, but then where are Puerto Rico, Guam and the like? We demand to know the history of alcohol prohibition in American Samoa!

This is pretty educational I had no idea that so many of the states had already banned alcohol by the time prohibition was enacted nationwide

This is THE ominous industrial sci-fi that gets used in a lot of these mapping type videos. Almost a cliche. Click on another popular mapping YouTuber’s video and you’ll probably hear it.

>Sees the county I grew up in was yellow >Do not remember alcohol being hard at all to find >Look it up online >The sale of alcohol in the county was banned except for in one city. >That city was the one we lived in What the fuck

Crazy how long the inbreeding states held on to prohibidition. I guess they couldnt legalize it because moonshining gave them something to do in the middle of nowhere

When I was at University of New Mexico the blue laws prevented alcohol sales on Sunday. The ER would fill up with some who drank airspray diluted in water called “ocean spray.” I don’t think you could buy a car from an Auto dealer either.

Cool map. Don’t forget that alcohol prohibition was a proxy war against domestic violence. Early 20th century women tired of getting hit and raped by their drunk husbands, and no way to stop them with marriage laws.

seeing how southern states were embracing prohibition before and after the 18th amendment i’d more readily believe that it was an artifact of the southern baptist faith and no relation to domestic violence

the 'ominous industrial sci-fi' is the exact same song that was used in a roblox SCP roleplay game i played a lot when i was a kid ??? lmao

PA is still real weird with it. Liquor sales are restricted to state controlled stores. Bars & restaraunts need a liquor license, and each municipality can only have a limited number of licenses. You couldn't even buy wine or beer in a grocery store until 2024.

The county I grew up in is marked as having it banned when I was a kid, and I know for a 100% fact that isn't true. Not sure where that info was pulled from. In fact, it's still marked as banned the year I turned 21, which I can again confirm was not true.

I wonder if it's one of those situations where it's marked as illegal in some obscure law that isn't enforced anymore, or it's illegal locally but that law is overwritten by another law from the state level?

Yeah, that seems entirely possible. If, for example, it were illegal in the county, but legal in my city, I don't know that I would have ever been in a scenario to notice that.

This map is a little misleading. There are only a few (primarily Native American communities, primarily in Alaska) where it's still totally banned like in prohibition. The rest of the red just means sale is illegal, but it's not illegal to have/drink it

The US ignored the 1920 census and did not redistrict to maintain the over weighting of congressional seats to rural pro-prohibition districts because they hated immigrants We are living through another failed white uprising against immigrants.
