Gotta wonder which exact individual had to go into the file and make the change itself, having to delete that specific excerpt before uploading the update

kind of sad to earn all of that goodwill and to just sell it on the cheap. Wondering if we'll ever get radical enough to outlaw boards of directors and kill off the means that these perpetually rich asshats use to enshittify every company that they can.

1/9 The fundamental crisis of the 21st century is corporate citizenship. The legal fiction that a balance sheet has the same rights as a living, breathing human. To see exactly how this machine operates, we have to look at its ultimate PR lie, Google's "Don't be evil." 🧵

2/ In the late 1990s, society began waking up to corporate psychopathy. Microsoft was the target, unmasked as a ruthless monopoly. Enter early Google. To survive, it needed a mask of virtue. It needed to look like a "good corporate citizen" to build trust and capture your data.

3/ So, the "Don't be evil" story was born & given a fake backstory. It was a naive, idealistic ruleset pushed by young engineers. What utter BS. In reality, it was a brilliant marketing shield. It was a calculated weapon used to say, "Look, we are different. We don't need to be regulated."

4/ But a corporation has no empathy or conscience. By design, it is a legal machine built solely to maximize short term shareholder value. A vague moral phrase can't change that. Legally, if "not being evil" gets in the way of profit, profit wins every single time.

"Don't be evil." This begs the question: Is any megacorporation guaranteed to consider the lives of their customers? And more: Are they required to consider the lives of their employees? They rob and poison their customers. They enslave their employees.

Worth noting that it was, at least at that time, moved to the end of the text - as a sort of summary - rather than removed fully.

Brin and Page also published a document stating in plain terms that if a search engine carried advertising it would have an unavoidable conflict of interests to display results that made it most money rather than results that responded most helpfully to the individual’s question. And, here we are.

interesting how they 100% knew what they became, if ur convinced and truly believe that ur not doing something wrong and "evil" u won't remove something like that

Yeah, and Paul Buchheit definitely gives off the vibe that he could be an evil tech billionaire if he tried to be, he’s a total Elon simp, I’m guessing he’s just content being multi millionaire.

Great example of how under a system controlled by the profit motive, any laws, constitutions, holy books, morals, mottos, guidelines, reforms and slogans are worth nothing and will be scrapped out eventually in the benefit of said profit.

An utterly contrived and BS backstory written in a strategic communications war room... bsky.app/profile/aste...

Has Wikimedia foundation now also receded from not being evil? bsky.app/profile/phir...

Wikimedia Foundation just fired a long time lead developer of MediaWiki as well as its entire community team for unionizing. If you’re a donor, email donate@wikimedia.org to protest this move. medium.com/@jakeorlowit...

Does everyone also hate Google now? Thought they were the company that gives away most of its products for free. As someone else commented, they changed the wording to 'do the right thing'.

I distinctly remember when this was at its peak in the early 2000s and thinking that "maybe Hoogle is one of the good ones" Now I don't even use Google anymore, and instead use @duckduckgo.com since you can turn off the AI bullshit
