If you are cis ("not transgender") I need to explain this to you. Bluesky today posted this vague thread, announcing-without-spelling-out that they're allowing a writer, net troll and anti-trans activist named Jesse Singal to stay on the platform, despite every trans user saying it makes us unsafe.

Bluesky Safety@safety.bsky.app

In the past month alone, over 12M people joined Bluesky, with daily active users growing 10x. We received more reports in two days than in all of last year, and have integrated new systems and quadrupled our moderation team to try and keep up. Sometimes, we have to work quickly to correct errors.

This is the heart of the thread: They're looking at the one specific rules violation Singal is being reported for *currently*. And they're saying, this doesn't count as a rules violation, because he was careful enough to stay within the strict lines of the rule as written.

We do not currently take action on accounts that share Bluesky screenshots with commentary, unless that commentary violates our Guidelines. We will take action when someone's private information is shared without their consent, but only when it is personally identifiable and verifiable in-app.

But you can have private profiles, or public ones blocking non logged user visualization (enforcement of blocking rules), moderation lists, simple mutes, and simple blocks. Isn't it enough? (Don't even know who the cited person in question is, this is a genuine curiosity)

Private profiles aren't a thing on here, and the person cited is specifically posting screenshots of users who *have* blocked him to incite his thousands of followers to dogpile It is not enough

I haven't seen this regarding private profiles because here I've never needed it. But one thing you can always do is to block logged out visibility and always block profiles using moderation lists. It helps. In this case, private profiles are really missing...

Blocking doesn't help if the person circumvents the block though, which is happening And it takes about a minute for a bad actor to just make a burner account to immediately start harassing someone who's blocked them

It’s kind of the difference between being able to lock your house and living in a place where stabbings don’t happen. You can isolate yourself to stay safe-ish but ultimately if it’s dangerous out there’s only so much you can limit your exposure to it.

Yeah, but to add to your point: the military dictatorship here in Brazil citizen to citizen violence was pretty low also. This had a cost. That is my point.

So it's true that Bluesky has better personal safety tools than Twitter (although you *can't* actually have private profiles on bluesky… if I'm not mistaken you have a private profile so just to warn you, it is not doing quite what you probably think it is)

But in the end it just can't be enough to protect you if a harassment culture develops for the site at large. You can't solve a social/cultural problem with technical solutions. And if you have a determined adversary willing to do things like make dupe accounts, they can overcome your tools.

If it helps, here's a thread describing the experiences I've had that guide my thinking here: bsky.app/profile/drya...

In 2014 I was a Twitter user. There was a pretty healthy little trans community there, we kept to ourselves, no one bothered us. Then a group called "gamergate" started targeting "sjw"s on the site, starting with my friends in indie games. Suddenly my community was targeted by swarms of sockpuppets…

In a much smaller scale: We had to ban somebody once in a discord server. They didn't break any rules, But everybody was just avoiding open channels bc of them. Mods included. So we just sent them out. We made the rules to keep the server alive, we could change them to keep it alive.

This misunderstands the issue, and is a fundamental error in moderation philosophy. The problem isn't any specific rule violation—Singal is skilled in "I'm-not-touching-you" harassment and will follow rules if you write them. The problem is the overall effect on the site Singal's presence will have.

This is Truth. Capital T. As such, you don't ban on RULES. You ban on the spirit of them. The philosophy behind them. Rules lawyers, by definition, are trying to break the rules. Ban them.

This is, incidentally, why the first rule in my Discord server is "don't be a dick," and the second is, "mods reserve the right to determine whether or not you're being a dick." Gives us broad leeway to say, "yeah, you technically stayed within Rule 5, but your behavior was still wrong."

No, it doesn’t. Dude is violating the spirit of the rules. Not the rules as written. There is no “rules as written” he won’t follow. He’ll follow whatever rules you have. But it won’t keep him from violating the spirit of the rules. He should be banned. Period.

Yes. (PS, because Internet tone is confusing sometimes, I want to be *totally* clear— my post was saying *Bluesky's* stance misunderstands the issue, and cosigning your point.)

Thank you. I was confused for a moment. I thought we were aligned, but wanted to clarify in case I somehow wasn’t clear in my point. And yes, Bluesky’s stance is definitely wrong here.

You have to understand the context. The context is that there is an organized, anonymous group, centered around a site named "Kiwifarms", that has as a goal driving trans people to suicide. Singal is *currently* describing himself as working with this group as part of his operations on the site.

I’ve been giving folks grace and professional courtesy around this. But IMO this post alone should warrant an account, PDS level takedown, perma ban. I know the core mod team is aware of Kiwi Farms as @blacksky.app has received dozens of reports ourselves. And @safety.bsky.app takes those down

Sorry for the random reply, but I'm trying to remember: doesn't the protocol or at least Blue sky allow you to view posts through the filter of different moderation services? Which is why there are more reporting options than just the bsky safety team url.

Hi. Yes, that's a planned feature, and it's *interesting*— features like this would have made Twitter a better place— but I don't think it's an adequate solution in this case. There are a few basic problems with the idea, one being bsky mod services work for *incoming* posts, but not for *outgoing*.

I need a bit more explanation. I'm reading the screenshot and I cannot figure out how it applies to the situation. Like, Is it true that Singal post have had technical issues? The explanation doesn't make technical sense... Is that a lie to justify painting target on an innocent victim?

Oh, uh, so the context there was that someone somewhere figured out that you could set your username to some sort of invalid value that would cause bluesky threads to crash. And they started replying to all of Singal's threads with that username, so that nobody could read Singal's threads.

I was iffy on this -I think Signal is loathsome but at the same time I really hate "cancellation" and want people who I find loathsome here as long as they abide by the rules - until I found out kiwifarms are involved. Terrorist organization, they act in bad faith every time and only want to kill.

Ok, I hadn't got to this point yet. But is there any other concrete evidence to tie this person to this kind of group and actually ban them? (Never heard of this term regarding pro harm groups)

Kiwifarm has been shut for a while. It started as something like voyeur fetich of sorts but quickly it became a way to bully mainly trans ppl. It has been blocked by the most absolutist neutral insentão entity of the internet, Cloudflare

Singal himself, as a writer, has been waging an escalating war on trans existence, launching from a 2018 Atlantic cover story that outed and misgendered its cover subject. He specializes in swaying "liberals" and centrists, targeting them with the wedge strategy of "well I support trans people BUT—"

them.usTrans Cover Model Discusses Being Misgendered and Outed by "The Atlantic"Mina Brewster’s photo was used for a widely-maligned 2018 Atlantic cover story about trans youth. He says “it pretty much outed me.”

Despite the oh-so-reasonable face he presents in his writing, if you run into him online he's a terror. It's easy to find stories of online critics of his who found their workplaces contacted demanding retribution. Singal openly states he's on Bluesky to "colonize" it. With, I guess, Kiwifarms users
