Trump: "So I'm studying him. And I made the mistake of saying that I started off by studying his ass. I just wantasink. And then I looked at his feet & they were massive. I made the mistake of studying his anatomy. Maybe I should do that with Ken Paxton, but I'm not sure your body is gonna qualify."
weird thing i have tried to describe before where LLM mistakes are simply inhuman. like they are entire types of mistakes that were unfathomable previously, literally could not have been made because the specific mix of competence and stupidity necessary was impossible
I hate comparing Dragon's Dogma to Elden Ring but Dark Arisen being kinda the same basic relative size as Erdtree (1/3rd the base game physically but also super vertical) is a pretty interesting bar that I like. "Expansion packs" are back.
Minneapolis Public Schools just emailed to say that enrollment is down this year—likely due to Metro Surge—with 900 fewer English Language Learners compared to this time last year. An estimated $12.9 million less revenue for our schools.
The impacts of ICE on our community continue to mount.
We gotta kill the “this is just an asset flip” narrative
Ex: Final Fantasy 13, 13-2, & LR
If you liked the first game’s combat, good news, 13-2 and LR are just that but a little refined each time. If you liked its story: good news, it’s more of that story.
I felt a bit vindicated by a former BioWare dev who said BioWare's mistake was not just pushing out new stories with basically same systems.
YES. Stop reinventing the wheel and just give us good stories. Somehow BioWare didn't want to be the story games company, which is what it was.
Trying to impeach Trump on day one will fail and make Dems look like Trump-obsessed one trick ponies. But cabinet impeachments should start immediately. File articles against Hegseth at 1PM, dude will resign by dinner.
Kamala Harris: I think that going in the direction of impeachment is not a good idea.
I was in the Senate for the last go-round, and the votes aren’t there.
I think after the election, we all have to just also agree that our attitude has to be to get stuff done…
1. Not sure when a new, on-the-record rape allegation against a sitting president isn’t considered news — especially considering Trump was found liable by a jury in a similar case — but it was ignored by most mainstream media outlets

Roose does a very nice job signaling in the second paragraph what sort of book this will be.
He decided to write it the night after partying with ketamine-snorting effective accelerationists.
He isn’t e/acc himself, but he hangs with that crowd and accepts their premises as newsworthy,
being anti AI is a luxury belief only available to first world people, especially Americans
imagine how important machine translation is for people whose first languages aren't that common
I can’t say if it’s related to our current political situation or not, but this guy leaving UC Berkeley for China over the summer is a real kicker to this story
- one where the nature of collaboration changes, possibly to include the opinions (and efforts) of non-coders (iff we figure it out before proprietary software does)
- one where we have a Big Bad Guy again (which wasn't always fun but was motivating as hell; also the Bad Guys are even worse now) 🧵
Basically the whole foreign policy team needs to be purged and many of them need to be locked up. It leaves us with a somewhat thin bench, but fortunately we can raid the stock of laid-off international aid and development staffers.
New: Mayor Zohran Mamdani and a group of his friends have been secretly using the NYPD Police Academy’s gymnasium in Queens to play pickup basketball — scrambling some operations at the facility.

Love the mental image of a mathematician spending thirty years on a problem, only for a robot to wander in, produce a 900-page Lean proof, and then immediately go back to helping someone write erotic vampire fiction.
No need to pour cold water on some fairly effective evangelization. She's also just... right? Closed labs want to capture the ability to perform all human knowledge work, lock it in a box, and defend it with the US government's missiles. They don't claim otherwise

Literally enlisting people in using growth hacking tactics *against* the networks themselves. I don't know that this is replicable, I don't know how this changes down the line against an adversary who might be even more brazen in their interference, but it worked this time.
I don't know that there is a template or a "secret sauce" or a clear-cut lesson to take from this. But if there is one it's the idea of treating social media as the hostile territory that it is, of actually acting like you are a participant in propaganda warfare and not like a consumer.
Maturing as a software engineer doesn’t mean writing fewer Horrors, it means knowing when to write A Horror and how to construct the proper containment zone around it
I once inherited a python system that handled about $100m in ARR. It was a single Django class that was 25k lines long and had zero tests or docs that always called out to MySQL and postgres via fork+exec rather than actually using those client libraries
Me in 2000s: "Player Piano is absolutely Vonnegut's worst novel. The idea that the capitalist class would steal the skills of their workers with a machine, cutting costs by replacing them with substandard labour, the technology will never exist."
TWENTY YEARS LATER
Me: "Well this is fucked up."
Us in 2000s: "Gundam Wing is stupid. What relevance will it ever have to tell a story where the 1% stage a global coup, convince the working class to go against their own interests, become obsessed with AI and trap us in a quagmire of factional infighting?"
Us now: "Fuck."
Brazil’s results tonight are a big endorsement for the idea that every country should have a second “are you you sure about that” election a couple weeks after the first one for the important stuff
my mom's house was bought at a substantial discount because the owners were convinced Jesus would come back in 2000 and were in a rush to sell everything to move out to some compound to await his return
I sometimes wonder what happened to them
In the mid-1800s, followers of William Millera quit their jobs and sold all their possessions, in anticipation of the imminent arrival of the rapture on October 22, 1944. Needless to day that did not happen, leading to what is called The Great Disappointment.
Aida Chavez (previously affiliated with a slew of populist left outlets and Just FP, a pro-russia appeasement org) had her CIA contractor boyfriend leak classified secrets for her to publish in her failing Substack. Espionage for internet clout is kinda new?
This dude is a YouTuber
We were doing just fine without YouTube, which has been used to spread horrible stuff like propaganda, scams, and Ethan Klein. Let’s go back, I guess
