The motto of the modern tech industry is "You can just do things to people"

Lol same thing elons kid told Carlson. they just quietly do what they want. That’s why we get such colorful sunrise/sunsets bc they explode stuff daily and that particulate glinting in the sun is beautiful But it is death. Toxins pollutant’s poisons. No regulation/oversight or conscience.

"Solipsistic and dazzled by its own swirling universe of technical possibilities, IBM was self-gripped by a special amoral corporate mantra: if it can be done, it should be done. To the blind technocrat, the means were more important than the ends." -Edwin Black's IBM and the Holocaust

Someone PLEASE tell me how we can all boycott #Microsoft to get AI the fuck out of our Word, Excel, Outlook, Bing, etc. and still get pour jobs done. We fucking didn't ask for it, why is it all over the top of our screens and in the way? And fuck you too, #Adobe.

It’s all a game to see what they can get computers to make people do. The money thing is just so investors keep giving them resources to do it and power so no one can stop them.

That's been the despot's M.O. for his entire adult life. He set that political trend in 2016 and enhanced it on 1/20/25, thanks to the legal Teflon cloak in which his SCOTUS Cartel of Six wrapped him. He believes immunity means invincibility and he provides that invincibility to his tech oligarchs.

And their families approve because more cash in their pockets and stuff in their closets and seats at tables and parties to attend. “Fuck your friends and neighbours”is the new family motto on planet Earth, in both the figurative and literal senses.

IN a world of bioengineering, nanotech, neuroscience, A.I., global webbing, panics, hacking, Human mastery of life, mater, wills Begs "Goethe 'nuff" ethical skills Sorcerers, Frankensteins show That things boomerang--D'OH!!! . . . To the Victors, we learn, go the spills.

What modern tech industry? We have been using the same square box in our pocket for 20 years now. On wait I can now get the annoying test messages in my glasses and on my watch now.

And we can do things to it! Close the Amazon account, ditch streaming and if feasible pick up a pen & write. Books are fascinating & libraries/bookshops are great places. I don't need to switch on my radio, cooker, fridge, lights etc remotely ffs, I can flip a switch. I can walk, phone, write. Go!

It’s not that modern, it’s the whole reason people should never have let “lower taxes,” put Republicans in office, because the only thing they hate more than taxes are the regulations that kept industry of all sorts from doing exactly that for the past 100years prior to Ronald Reagan.

Yes. And you said "we". But what I am trying to say is you may need a big "we". The question is, is it a problem of persuading more people to join the "we", or of convincing the people we already have to start acting

this came about with steve jobs mentality: consumers don't know what they want; we will tell them never have been an apple consumer

Remember when we did antitrust? The modern tech industry was created in a neoliberal competition policy environment that's been there since the 90s. They have been allowed to create enormous monopolies and that is the core of the issue. You can do what you want when there's no alternative.

The last one was when Clinton tried to break up Microsoft. The government lost and there hasn’t been an attempt to do it again. Corporate America started all the mega-mergers and went full on into buying the courts, getting Citizens United passed (well just call it that).

Since then they have been busy buying their legislators who no longer represent the constituents who vote for them. We won’t see true anti-trust again. Not until Citizens United is overturned and that won’t happen anytime soon.

The government won, and then George W. Bush became president and dropped the case in a way that actually gave Microsoft additional power over computer operating systems they hadn't had before

I started in software in the 70's. Yes, policies of the Reagan Revolution helped ruin the industry I spent my life in. But to say "neoliberals" had much to do with it is hard to understand. Apolitical Greed ruined Tech and Software. And pretty much Everything Else. And most will NEVER accept this.

Neoliberal economists successfully went around the world arguing for changes to competition policy that would allow more and larger mergers. The argument is that mergers should only be prevented if consumer prices will increase. You say apolitical greed but it is 100% Freidman's economics.

I shoulda presumed there's no way on Earth you'd wanna talk about the forest, and not a given tree you hate. Whatever. This world belongs to neither of us anyway.......

Crack downs on mergers have lead to the "acqu-hire" where companies hire the employees they think have the skills they want and leave the rest of company and staff alone. Employees who had stock in the company don't get the benefit of the big payday. But they get their freedom. Yay ...?!

Okay but have you considered: What if instead of antitrust we simply allowed the monopolies and then regulate them in a way that allows the government to censor speech and track people

It’s important that you either deny that you’ve done them or point out how much better you are now at them so it doesn’t matter how bad you were then.
