This article is dogshit for many reasons, chief of them that it doesn’t ever actually discuss what AI does or why it’s such a big deal, just that it’s not just “predicting the next token.” Its only argument is that “the left” (which includes the New York Times!) should use AI for some reason.

This argument is made from the position of someone who is deep in the cult. They actually believe that this tech is somehow world shattering and anyone not bought into the cult, who just thinks the models are interesting tools with some useful applications, rather than magical, is crazy.

‘Why isn’t everyone else as excited as the cursed collection of neoliberals, fascists and tech bro bootlickers?’ Shouldn’t be surprised they were able to prompt an article out of that.

Complaining about "spicy autocorrect" is fair, to a degree. It should be "spicy autocorrect localized in an n-dimensional vector matrix". But that doesn't make it any more intelligent. He also conflates a potential bubble with dismissiveness. Tulips are real, the values assigned were not.

Can we also revel in the supreme arrogance of an article which argues that the burden of proof is on neuroscientists to prove how the fucking human brain works, rather than….I dunno….the shitty LLMs that hallucinate all the time?

You think me crazy for preferring the wire mother from the soft mother??? But fool that you are, you fail to recognize how useful the wire mother is, at predicting the next time I'll be (ouch) jabbed and scraped by my wire mother.

under-discussed thing that really peeves me about All Of This: there are whole fields of study on things like the nature of knowledge, cognition, language, etc. we _have_ answers to dumb questions like this (usually shaped like "no, and here's why"), people are just incurious, and STEM-pilled

suddenly trying to locate that article penned by an economist who opened with "so it turns out The Left was totally right about poverty and the destruction of wage growth, but they were shrill and annoying, so i ignored them for 20 years"

I am the left, and I'm saying AI has limited uses as an enhanced (but unreliable) search feature, and for cheating in school. I am also saying that these things ain't worth $ billion. I AM THE LEFT AND I SAY THESE THINGS

This is legitimately a rehash of a Kelsey Piper article from last summer. But this newer piece is unique in that it just gets critics wrong. Doctorow is the funniest name to include if your argument is "the left doesn't want to use AI." Kelsey at least had the sense to not name specific people.

Understood, thanks. I was worried there were some pro-AI Doctorow takes I had missed but it sounds like he basically just finds voice transcription useful

I mean I don't see him as a supporter: "AI is the asbestos in the walls of our technological society, stuffed there with wild abandon by a finance sector and tech monopolists run amok. We will be excavating it for a generation or more." and "It is a way to create tech debt at scale."

These people can't engage with substantive criticism so they've just tared everyone as "the left" who all have a single philosophical hang up. Meanwhile, you've got pretty much everyone who isn't in tech genuinely pissed because this LLM rollout, for lack of better word, is ruining everything.

This is such a good point. But beyond this LLMs are pissing in everyone’s beer. Noisy DCs, rising electricity costs, end of consumer technology, spamming open source projects, list goes on. This is not a partisan issue. Ironically a better “rollout” probably could’ve made the worst uses palatable.

"Is there technology the left is excited about?" is the kind of question you only ask if you're wildly naive about technology. mRNA vaccines. Heat pumps. Offshore wind. Urban mining. Sodium batteries. But god forbid we're not fawning over every new implementation of Making Computers Bad At Math.

Plenty of technologies that I’m excited about as a person of “the left”, thank you very much. High speed rail, microgrids, non-fossil power generation, superconductors… need I go on? I’m just pissed that we are throwing so many resources into a bottomless pit that will consume the things i love!!

Yes, that article is quite bad, and now that I'm reminded of it again I'm realizing it's horribly awful, and then again come to think of it it's also thoroughly ghastly and possibly very terrible.

Isn't Bernie Sanders talking a lot about regulating AI? The left talks about regulation, the right talks about deregulation (and I guess they "engage" with it, because they support using it) I don't really understand what he wants the left to do

AI is wrong all the time. In my lowly profession of perfume importing and retail, where details matter- it’s wrong more often than not. So much so, that I finally swore off Google Chrome and search. Ultimately, they are stockpiling compute and storage infrastructure to surveil us. That’s clear.

These guys telling us that we're "missing out" on AI told us that we were missing out on NFTs, the metaverse, play to earn gaming, crypto memecoins, smart pins, and way more BS. Some of them have already given up and are pivoting to telling us that we're missing out on prediction markets though.

3d printing, CnC lathes, laser welding and so all are all very new tech that allow for industrial grade single unit production. If we ever actually abolish commodities they would be the things that let you custom make everything to meet demand
