AI has lost the Mandate of Heaven I’m afraid. WSJ saying it’s a “when” the ai bubble bursts. SNL dabbing on their biggest names for being weird. FT says 50% of chips sold in 2026 and 2027 have nowhere to go. Hundreds of billions short on revenue for even 10% ROIC. A disaster.

Nvidia has an excellent business making chips for gamers, researchers, etc. Their current valuation is ridiculous even considering their sales since it has infinite growth baked in. They’ll have to take the correction and move on. Maybe put some of Jensen’s leather jackets on eBay.

I mean, their profits would take a massive dip AND they would have to pay the debt they warranted (unless I'm misunderstanding what they were doing). Even if their gaming and professional business would resume as usual, I don't see how they could come out of this unscathed.

' I think 'bankruptcy' is still a thing. The principals walk away with billions. "Here's a bag you can puke in." for the rest... 😐

A bubble, quoth he, as if bubbles were novel—I have been a bubble these threescore years, heaved a-high to be hurled down below, and still I sup on sack while wiser men starve sober. When the painted queen falls, let her fall; I shall be found in the tavern, owing everyone and be

Artificial intelligence is as genuine as an Artificial apple pie, cardboard pastry filled with chunks extracted from breast implant silicon smothered in SAE30 engine oil.

It’s just a matter of time now, and mostly a matter of when the money runs out. There is no future for Anthropic or OpenAI at their current scale. Hyperscalers need $308bn of annual ai revenue - around the revenue of Microsoft - for 10% return on 2026 and 2027 capex. Could be more with cost of debt.

They don’t intend to make money off the AI, they intend to rule and with it and opress anyone or anything that gets in their way. Citation: DOGE as a response to unwelcome government regulations and investigations.

The level of financial misalignment is as bad as I’ve been warning, and you’re going to see headline after headline of stuff I’ve said in the newsletter for years. I say this with both pride and sadness because being right is going to be many layers of horrible.

Everyone keeps reaching for the “too big to fail” button because it is fundamentally harder for them to imagine what happens if it’s too big to succeed. The unique conditions in play make a bailout impossible. This is also an ideological bubble to the point I think it creates a schism in society.

These data centers are financial poison even if you bought them cheap. The returns are awful, the debt is toxic, the ongoing opex is nasty because of the cost of cooling and the power demands, and 30% gross margins requires near-perfect conditions and constant revenue for 5+ years.

Wonder what happens to the pension funds levered up to the nuts on loans for data centers that are mostly commits for 2027 chip runs. Maybe Nvidia has a generous return policy…

calling my shot now that if any of these boxed GPUs sold at pennies on the dollar flow to computational chemistry researchers at scale, you're going to get breakthroughs in biochem that you can only dream of because convincing DOE or whoever to get grants for more compute is impossible

I've alaays thought Microsoft's strategy with OpenAI was to wait for the bubble to burst and then collect the scraps based on how intertwined OpenAI is with Azure.

What happens to the wider AI tech (LLMs) as a whole after the bubble bursts? Haven't heard you talk about it... It has now been in use for quite some time and has been integrated into many fields I know of (even if the results differ widely depending on use case).

And me sitting in a teams meeting, listening to management say "AI is here to stay", for the 10th time in a fortnight, like a defensive prayer against reality...

Here's how it will likely go down. The companies who can make use if it will realize, and are actually realizing now, that they don't need the lastest and greatest models, and see that it's actually cheaper and more secure to run their own AI hardware in-house.

ehhh.... if management were correct, and didn't have a nagging, gnawing doubt in their hearts - there wouldn't be a need to constantly reinforce the belief. Also, if they were correct, they wouldn't be saying "AI" as a vague catch-all, they would say <insert actual AI product here>

Yeah, it's more correct to say 'artificial cognition' at this point, as there's no intelligence in there at all. It's just more automation, like we have done with machine vision, natural language recognition & synthesis, inverse kinetics, etc. Actual AI is still many decades/centuries off at least.

Where are NFTs today? Or the Metaverse? Not all bubbles persist. I do suspect AI will be closer to blockchain - it will have some persistent uses, and many of them will continue be quite deleterious to society, but it will never be one tenth of the promised Revolution...

nfts and the metaverse were not bubbles in the same way. they did not have the same massive over investment that ai and dot com does and did. but i think your conclusion is probably correct. all i’m really saying is that “i can’t wait for the bubble to pop so that AI goes away” is overly optimistic.

Won't it be more like Concord and hypersonic flight. The tech is still out there, hypersonic flight is clearly superior to subsonic flight, but it's not commercially viable for any company to offer hypersonic flight any more.

yeah, it will probably by like that’s insofar as the tech will no longer be used by the general public. instead it will be used by the ultra wealthy, the MIC, corporations, and governments to further exploit the working class.

Ed, it’s okay. It won’t matter when AI loses trillions, collapses our economy, and puts all humanity out of work because it’s going to kill us all first. There’s nothing to worry about because we’ll all be dead!

I kid you not. I just saw a Gemini commercial for how to design your pet's Halloween costume. I mean fuck curing cancer with AI when there are animals costumes to design. 😂🤣🤪😩🤬

Absolutely These nuts are reaching wider parts of society and nobody trusts them. In fact, they’re openly mocked for sounding insane. The AI industry is being laughed at and everybody knows it’ll crash and hurt everyone.

Not to be dramatic but all this is genuinely why midterms might be the most important election of our lives. They realize their only hope of profit is "nationalizing" AI and trump leaving power means someone actually using any of the institutional guardrails they have lept over.
