People who believe not voting 2024 makes them morally superior because they're not "murdering children" should be constantly reminded that they helped elect Trump, who destroyed USAID - an act that's now murdering children around the world. www.bu.edu/sph/news/art...

Voting third party at the national level is not a viable option. There’s no infrastructure there to support a third party candidate. And even in multiparty democracies national elections (and even most local) turn into binaries.

I recall posting several times that allowing Trump to return to the White House would make things worse for everyone, including Palestinians. I know you can guess how well that observation was received --- and how well it is still received today, after proving accurate.

The entire point here is that people that voted to feel "pure" or didn't vote to feel "pure" killed a whole lot of people for their egos. Given this situation, regardless of how it came about, they chose to make it mind-bogglingly, disastrously worse due to injury to their self importance.

I don't think it's relevant. That's literally abuser logic. "I wouldn't have had to hit [democracy][starving people in Africa][the survival of the planet] if you hadn't made me so darned mad." It's legit to be extremely mad. Not legit to burn everything down over... things being burned down.

The problem with the people ‘criticizing’ Biden over Israel were that the loudest ones were talking out of their ass. We /just/ saw that a US President cannot order a foreign nation to stop its military actions, like they insisted. Literally days ago. Anyone who said as much was called genocidal.

I have absolutely no patience with people who want to preen about how failing to vote for Harris makes them Not Child Murderers. Their self-centered failure to vote means that we are now in for an utterly nightmarish amount of global human suffering. www.scientificamerican.com/article/usai...

Americans who failed to vote in 2024 helped elect Trump, and as a result, they absolutely do bear responsibility for the suffering of children with HIV who are now being deprived of life-saving medications. abcnews.go.com/Internationa...

Shortages of vital supplies intended to prevent global malnutrition are already running dry thanks to Trump and Musk's evil cuts to USAID. This could have been prevented if more Americans had been willing to get off their asses and vote. reliefweb.int/report/world...

worked for three refugee resettlement agencies for 20+ years. We saw every day the essential work of USAID. Probably many Americans knew nothing of its lifesaving work.

Those people failed so many, from the deaths of kids because of USAID cuts, to the loss of rights for minorities and marginalized groups. And not to be a doomer, but all this misery has occurred within the first six months. Trump still has a lot of time left to hurt so many more people.

it’s not about making themselves morally superior, it’s that asking someone to vote for a party that spits in your face and promises to keep bombing your relatives is morally repugnant. you cannot guilt someone into participating in a system wherein both sides want them dead.

A lot of people who proudly say they didn't vote in 2024 are people who don't have family in Gaza. I am not directing my anger at people directly impacted by the Gaza genocide.

It's sort of difficult, because when you see what was happening in Gaza you can understand why some people felt that they couldn't vote for the Democrats, as that to them may show approval. It's not always enough to say we won't be as bad as these people. But yes, things are worse under the GOP.

It’s nice that you’re willing to admit you don’t give a fuck about hundreds of thousands of people dying as a result of USAID cuts - but we know what’s really important, getting to be right on the Internet.

Right but the politics and policies that made and keep poor countries dependent on U.S. largesse, and the many, many evils enabled by that dependence, are fully bipartisan. Harrisbwkuld have been better, but she would have perpetuated the same systems that got us here.

It reminds me a bit of whichever Catholic argument was going around against funding healthcare lest some of it go to birth control--the same prioritization of a sense of personal spiritual purity over widespread material improvement.

I’m not terribly happy with my dem congressional delegation but my other choice was KKKaroline Leavitt .. So don’t have the luxury of a purity vote. Pathetic Uneducated Foreign Op Excuses Jill Stein Voters= Mike Flynn Every Single Day 🧲

But that's the thing: They believe that, because they didn't vote, they are not morally liable for the consequences. In a sense, their worldview is the diametric opposite of "silence is violence"; they believe passivity is ok, whereas voting for the lesser evil is a morally acceptable endorsement.

Just once I would like one of them to explain why, in the choice of "50k die and I am morally culpable because I voted for the person overseeing it" and "50k+1 die and my hands are clean because I didn't," the latter is preferable because it seems like you're trading "clean hands" for a human life

My voting policy now is "who is the least competent murderer". Not even the most likely to murder, but the one whose selfish, bloodthirsty policies will not lead to as much unnecessary death among the population, say by restricting health care or suppressing rights.

I believe the specific argument before the election was that Harris should not be "rewarded" for Gaza. So her punishment is that even more people are murdered, I guess? Like it's her fault because if she had broken with Biden on Gaza The Left would have pushed her over the line?

what strikes me is that at least with a lot "online" folks (which i know are not representative) there is barely a peep about this. i suppose it makes sense those using "moral superiority" to defend not voting would also be those most vocal online 🙄

its quite astonishing. i also think it is important to put things in a historical context but i get really irritated with the blanket "it has always been this way" statements. like even so, tons more people are noticing so that is good thing? no, they suck bc they didn't notice before 🙄

Exactly. Red votes, anti-Harris/“genocide-joe” protest votes, and not voting had horrendous consequences. May they come to understand their errors and speak out, protest, do better in 2026.
