the thing about our current moment is that yes, the anti-AI and anti-big tech people are getting very reactive nowadays - but have you seen what they’re *reacting* to?

Extremely normal and fine for a company to put this in a public statement

Generative AI industry is going to be an easy target for pretty much ALL class resentments building to a breaking point and I love that for them.

People were bitching that data center story exaggerated the heat island effect but I can't be bothered to care. Yeah, people are going to pick easy targets and facts don't matter. You built this world, Silicon Valley, go ahead and eat shit.

I think it is 'opportunity ', inclusion into equal opportunity as per the Declaration of Independence's second paragraph: 'self evident truth's-Life, Liberty and pursuit of Happiness. which, in the US, have a long history of suppression. To live without exclusion, usually race.

AI guys: We're literally inventing a God that hates humanity on a fundamental level and will likely torture everyone or destroy the world. Rando who listened to that: *throws Molotov cocktail* AI guy: Why are you taking what I said seriously? And why aren't you adopting our product faster?

I am not saying what you just said is true. But lets just assume it is. What about AFTER the election? Why are Dem Leaders begging oligarchs- who want to end Democracy and are racist as fuck- for forgiveness for Walz' criticism of oligarchs? Why mend fences? www.politico.com/news/2025/02...

politico.comHakeem Jeffries met privately with Silicon Valley donors in bid to ‘mend fences.’The meeting comes as the tech world has lurched rightward in the second Donald Trump era.

endorsing surveillance capitalism, pollution, stolen resources, unemployment, poverty wages, facism, war profiteering... inclusion into what is such a dumb fucking question. when you concentrate weath to such a degree you don't even see how democracy works anymore we've completely lost the fkn plot.

The US culture I have experienced as an immigrant now Citizen makes out being a chronic workaholic to be a good thing Used to work with people who would have done 12 hour shifts 7 days a week if work policy didn’t cap them at 6 :|

I mean, is it unreasonable to see this stuff and believe the future is doomed if you’re just Some Guy who doesn’t understand all the ins and outs of how this stuff works?

like maybe the public would be getting less frothy and toothy about this if big tech hadn’t spent the last three years constantly threatening the public with impoverishment and feudal control, idk

I do feel bad for all the legitimately good tech people out there catching strays over this, but let’s make sure we’re keeping our eyes on the “genuine threat of technofascism” ball

It's probably the self-loathing talking, but after a decade in tech I'm not sure there are enough to be worth feeling bad about. I meet so many people with values very similar to mine in the abstract, but who aren't willing to critically evaluate the systems they participate in.

More charitably: the legitimately good ones know what they (or, if I may be so bold: we) signed up for and are thrilled to take some strays if it means seeing public opinion turn on these assholes.

I feel like a lot of decent techies are in the “no this is not hype; yes it’s important to know what’s going on.” Less “Isn’t the beach lovely!” and more “The surf is rapidly going out and we should all figure out a way to move to higher ground.”

Not for nothing that androidization is a totalitarian project. And the tell is the tech oligarch notion that pluralism is a bad thing, when pluralism is one of the most important and fundamental of human political traits.

I spend a lot less time lying awake at night worrying about the left actually going full Luddite than I do about the techno fascists winning the entire game.

We have been cock of the walk for too long and if it takes some of us eggs getting broken, well, we as a society need that omelette. Or something

If I gleefully threatened to destroy the livelihoods of millions of people on a daily basis, oh and by the way that's the GOOD outcome because also I might accidentally destroy all human civilization (a big oopsie, teehee!), I should be surprised if I *didn't* have a few molotovs tossed my way lol

The public probably also wouldn't be freaking out about data centers as much if Trump wasn't canceling all the renewable energy projects that would keep electricity prices low, plus in the northeast the tariffs on cheap Quebec hydro power.

To be clear, those things wouldn't actually fix the problems caused by the massive AI energy consumption problem. The grid hasn't been maintained properly and can't easily be upgraded because we privatized power delivery and there is no standardization. Someone has to bear the cost we have avoided

The way I see it is, yes, there may be some uses for LLMs for the software people, but I also believe the silicon valley (which is really just the peter thiel and associates) vision of the future cannot be allowed to come to pass

I could make an argument that US leadership in science and innovation has been due not to culture, but to (1) the decades long research partnership between government, academia, and business that the Trump Administration is seeking to dismantle, (2) coupled with a large market based economy.

My other comment is this. AI is not solving any actual fucking problems. All it is doing is doing what humans already do and being faster about it. Big fucking deal. Use it for research, fine, but don't act like its some world changing tech when literally it's only purpose is make humans redundant.

Artists screamed into the void for over a year that AI was going to fuck everything over, we were mocked, attacked, told we were just jealous that tech could make art now. Told straight out that "democratizing" art was good because we were all rich ass elitist gatekeepers. I only saw two tech ppl..

try to help us. The rest fucking ignored us or joined in on the hate or made money off this shit. We were told to "learn to code" and then AI came for everyone else.. Meanwhile all art and music has been raped by techbro asshats and they did it becuse they knew humans hated artists so much they...

Would have no problem training their tech for free. Every tech worker who stood by and said nothing and did nothing while knowing damn well what was happening needs to take a good long fucking look at their own morals and ethics because you all did this.

Exactly. Not only do the people pushing these technologies seem to be inherently evil, but there are very few legislative guardrails to act as a firebreak for AI's worst usages. Good technology goes hand-in-hand with good legislation.

Someone recently made a distinction between reacting and responding. The public has observed the Tech Bros & are responding. I don't think opposition to Neo-Feudalism and eugenics is reactive. It's a healthy response to a societal threat.

This is why I can't get mad at any amount of hate directed at AI, even tho part of me is like "so you're mad at... matrix multiplication and statistics...?" Because it's stuff like this that people are reacting to - along with widespread intellectual property theft, accelerating income inequality

matrix multiplication and statistics never told anybody to shoot someone or shoot themselves or, in a milder case, accidentally poison themselves with bromine, take a hiking trail that doesn’t exist, or be their own very bad lawyer ”ai” isn’t math, it’s a product

thanks! my wish would be for people to start talking about llms as products, not technologies there’s technology under there (esp during the early evolution) but when you use anything “ai” it’s pure product by that point.

For folks familiar with how fascist movements actually evolved, from D'Annunzio to post-war neo-Nazis... none of this sounds particularly new. Just more "doctrines of fascism" and embracing new tech for the fascist project like the radio, flight, etc. before.

Just another characteristic of fascist ideology and movements Umberto Eco laid out in his classic list. Each is generally an idea taken to an extreme in its own right and not exclusive to fascism. But one finds them in overwhelming combination in any proto-fascist or fascist movement.
