We should really work together, hand and hand, to focus all of our community’s poorly-suppressed and totally ruthless bullying energy on the single demographic we all agree actually deserves it: Harry Potter Adults in the year of our lord 2026

We argue constantly and at length about if certain groups actually deserve to be made fun of, but there is one true and unambiguously morally and ethically correct answer, and that is “people who remember 9/11 who still root their self identity in being a Slytherin”

The Disney adults are fine: I have known many Disney adults who are great people who just have a hobby I find incomprehensible but mostly harmless. The Harry Potter adults are never great people.

There are even people who were once Harry Potter adults and who recovered who are great. Being a Harry Potter Adult in 2026, however, is a very serious indicator that you are either a genuine shithead or so totally checked out that you’re basically a sea cucumber and shouldn’t be able to type

actively participating in society does imply the responsibility of at least some baseline level of cultural awareness of major issues facing it, and "J. K. Rowling is a fascist monster fanatically and monomaniacally dedicated to a genocidal effort against trans people" qualifies

I was your classic Harry Potter kid. Super into it, all the kids in my class reading it, each book release felt like this big massive event, then every film release. We’d listen to the audio books on holiday car rides. I punched a friend for spoiling one of the books. (He didn’t hold it against me)

Then I grew up and realised the shoddy world building, the kinda messed up messages in a few places, and whilst I’d call myself a Hufflepuff (cos nobody wanted to be a Hufflepuff) and I still engaged with it for family stuff, I was over it. Then JKR came out as a bigot and I was done for good.

Coincidentally, was thinking about this today in the context of my step-daughter, who's about to start HS, and AFAIK, knows nothing about how awful Rowling is. It's complicated! She generally likes HP, takes the stupid quizzes about 'what HP house are you in', etc. 1/4

I emphatically believe a kid should be a kid. Let her enjoy her fandom, etc. OTOH, she's on the cusp of adulthood, and by the time she's an adult, she SHOULD know how awful JK is. Per your point, all adults should. 2/4

So --- at what age do you teach your kids about transphobia, and about JK in particular --- and at the same time, probably destroy one of the beloved parts of their childhood? 3/4

In my case, being the stepdad is both good and bad. It's not really my place to break the seal on this conversation with my step-daughter; OTOH, I have to stand by and watch as her Dad takes her to see HP movies. 4/4

What even is "Harry Potter adult?" Is liking the movies/books enough or do you have to be on the level of active cosplay to be considered one? Disclaimer: I am neither, just curious what is the current level of discourse.

Maybe I am too soft-hearted to bully them, what else can I do? Suggesting Discworld maybe? Would that count as bullying HP fans? Oh, oh, maybe I could suggest Morrowind to them, is that bullying? :3

my own relationship with Harry Potter is, I think, bog-standard for a median-age millennial: I enjoyed the books just fine when I was an actual child, and I retained fairly pleasant memories about them until it was revealed that JK Rowling is a repulsive person

same, read them to my first kid and he liked them but I was relieved when his teenage self naturally glommed onto better fandoms like Dr. Who and Walking Dead. Wholesome! 😆

Mine's probably an outlier for a median-age Xer, and definitely more complicated 1 - it's one of the things we bonded best over with our kid, who had special needs that made any success worth celebrating. I'll be goddamned if I'm gonna let that TERF prick interfere with my memories of that.

2 - when I was going through Some Shit with a side of sleep disturbance, HP was pablum I could read at night to let my brain relax while keeping it just engaged enough so the intrusive thought spirals couldn't form Wouldja believe Greg Bear's "Blood Music" or Dan Simmons' "The Terror" didn't work?

I’ve never admitted it openly, but I always thought the Harry Potter movies were inexplicably overhyped. The first one was a B- with some fun moments and cool vfx, the rest were shit. Kids doing magic via cgi off the coattails of the pioneering work of Jurassic and Matrix was well timed. That’s it.

The first two were good, having that same magic feeling from Chris Columbus that he gave to Home Alone and Young Sherlock Holmes. They made the characters grow up too fast in the third movie, with a new director. It felt like whiplash.

I like it as a middle schooler. I read the first five books, but when the sixth book came out, I was in high school and just lost interest. I think I just outgrew it and moved on. There was no love lost when I found out about JK Rowling being herself.

The movies aren't interesting qua movies, more as "an object lesson on how to run a set with a lot of young actors" and "empirical proof that Columbus and Cuaron know what they're doing as directors" since they fell off hard thereafter.

I enjoyed the books, even if technically too old for their target audience, and thought that the films were generally good. I even went to the Harry Potter world thing near London. And then the author turned out to be a raging bigot and I've made sure never to support anything else she does.

I feel like the main trio rejecting JKR's transpobia and pissing her off so bad she's doing a reboot out of spite has caused the franchise to wind up in a weird place where the film adaptations are more respected than the original work precisely because of their distance from the original author.

The movies legitimately did remove most of JKR’s nastiest tendencies like always making fun of fat people or the whole HAPPY SLAVES thing. Everything people criticize the most is absent from the films other than the whole “and society didn’t need to change just kill wizard hitler”

I had very pleasant memories. Loved the films. Heard rumblings and started to turn off. 2020, my parents buy my wife and me tickets to the broadway show. Enjoyed it. Pandemic hits lockdown around my birthday. We wanted to do a cozy watch. Saw the films. One week later, she posts Never went back

Hot take(?): the movies aren’t very good, but they are significantly better than the books, not to a small degree because some of the most obnoxious stuff got sanded out

I *think* I watched all of them at least once. And like, I *Fan* things. I’ve watched the LOTR movies countless times despite their flaws. And I even liked the main cast of the HP movies very much. Those movies are bad. They aren’t good. I never rewatched any of them.

I never read them as a kid and on a lark I tried the first few books a few years back and the thing that stands out to me is they have absolutely nothing to say. There is not much going on with them subtextually or thematically. It’s pure empty calories, unlike a lot of kids media.

They’re not *terrible* IMO and they’re fun for children (and children Iove somewhat dark entertainment), but they’re also not exactly timeless works of brilliance either

For sure, Rowling is technically competent at writing prose and constructing a narrative and characters with a trait or two but idk, there’s something about how little the books have to actually say about the hidebound, hierarchical society with lots of clear problems. There’s a vacuousness to it.

I do think there's interesting stuff to discuss about the franchise, but I'm not at a shortage of interesting stuff to discuss so I'm just not that inclined to hold on to it despite her

Old fart here. I remember reading the first two or three books as my kids were just learning to read at the point they were published I thought.” these are badly written Agatha Christie murder in the country estate mysteries”. But my kids liked them they actually read them and so I’ll grant

A mild value to them. I actually did like the first half of the deathly hallows film. Other than that, they seemed derivative and then finding out the authors, beliefs, and actions killed it for me. I don’t plan on watching the redo Also, it has sparked interesting conversations with my kids now

Hmm. I get you there, but wonder if thats viewed the same way say here in the US, or if US fans see it the way i described it. Dont know any HP fans so I I dont uave anyone to ask

I'm just saying that that isn't authorial intent. For me the sorting was kind of confusing so I looked into how UK schools worked and I read it into that context. In general it's used like an astrological sign or Meyers Brigs, not as a judgement.

She really just mashed up Enid Blyton boarding school mysteries with Narnia and threw in a little Roald Dahl poor-kid wish fulfillment. Which isn’t a criticism! Most great genre fiction is other stuff we like in new combinations. Which isn’t to say there aren’t plenty other valid criticisms.

There’s a lot of truth to that. Ultimately HP worked because the Harry/Rom/Hermione interactions worked. She let them make mistakes and then learn from them and they felt like people, not tropes. That’s a strength that will cover a lot of plot and world building weaknesses.

It would if that were actually the case lmao. Some of you have even crazier ideas for the series than the great transphobe herself ever dreamed up

If their creator hadn’t become a threat to the lives and livelihoods of others I’d still be following that stuff without shame. I was too old for them when they came out!

i posted something the other day on facebook (which i rarely do anymore) about how bad rowling sucks and a friend who was a *huge* fan was like, "i'll keep the books and dvds i got years and years ago - i already have them - but i'm never paying for anything of hers again." i was like, "solid."

Yeah, exactly. Similarly, I bought a couple of the Lego sets, and I'm not going to fish the pieces out of the bucket of Legos, because it doesn't contribute to the problem if a random minifig has the unique Harry head, and an owl's an owl. Buying *more* of those sets, though, no thanks.

There's so many similar properties you can get into instead too, how are you not bored with HP by now? Fantastic Beasts was total dogshit, even if you were a huge HP fan, unless you're pro-nazi-rowling you should be sick of it all. Join us in the Witch Hat Atelier fanclub.

I think there's also some rage to be had over a group of ADULTS who take a FICTIONAL THING so seriously that they are intent on preserving it to the detriment of other, REAL THINGS. Aka "Dobby's grave" It's emotionally immature at the very least.

It's possible I'm falling prey to special pleading, but I do think there's a pretty big difference between "I still own material purchased before she became loathsome" and "I am actively enriching an obvious bigot" or this whole Dobby's grave BS.

Prior to her making anti trans bigotry her entire identity, I'd had OSC as my example "I'm willing to buy his stuff from used book stores only so he can't financially benefit". But in most ways she's worse as she's actively campaigning to harm people rather than just being casually loathsome.

As I am often saying, rainbow capitalism isn’t *good* in and of itself but it is a barometer for where our acceptance is. If it is seen as profitable to cater to us, even if the way it happens is cringe, that means that the winds are blowing in the right direction.

It's funny, because Game's Workshop had a problem with Nazi-adjacent types glomming onto the fascist imagery in Warhammer 40K, and have taken great pains to distance & excise those people from the fanbase. There's criticism about how effective it is, but I'll give kudos to them trying

If she hadn’t done that heel turn and was still just supporting children’s charities I might still be in the fandom. I made good friends there! We wrote stories picking apart the flaws in the books! And Bellatrix was an easy closet cosplay for me! But my son (who grew up on the books) is trans. DONE

I know one person who legitimately fits the latter. They love HP and also they lived on an island with very limited electricity or Internet access for like the past 7 years and then had a kid immediately when they came back from there so are still checked out of the world.
