have they ever fucked up in the opposite direction, quoting some guy they say is a rando but is actually a dem operative? why is it always republicans?
There are only two explanations for the NYT's habit of presenting GOP operatives and donors as true swing voters: 1. Their reporters and editors are somehow incapable of running a simple Google searches, showing just a staggering level of journalistic incompetence 2. They want to the GOP to win

there are a ton of hilarious examples of this but none will ever top the participant in the NYT's recurring 2024 "focus group" who worked for one of the largest Republican political consulting firms in America.

Politico wrote up Zohran playing basketball with the uncovering-a-big-scandal tone the same day the NYTimes wrote up "credible allegation that The President of the United States raped a woman" as a political strategy story. Broken media in a nutshell

Note the key phrase "so many people." Yglesias thinks it's fine—good in fact—that American billionaires are very interested in foreign elections and routinely influence them to promote corruption and fascism. His concern is that filthy plebs like you and me might want better things for everyone.

I don't know that there is a definitive line to cross that makes you say, "I live in a police state now" but when masked gunmen can routinely brutalize the public, citizen or immigrant alike, with impunity, you have reached that point.

The US is not about to have a free and fair election. The state has put its thumb on the scale to favor the ruling party in multiple ways. It's a mostly free, somewhat unfair election. But still one where the ruling party can be overwhelmed by numbers. Hence the term "competitive authoritarianism."
It is atrocious we have to operate under this constant credible and explicit threat from one political party, the fact we keep calling it a “free and fair election” needs some light revising

I'm going to point out that Jesse Singal has a very public track record of being intensely, specifically cruel to individuals, specifically the trans people who criticize him, whom he has hounded to their workplaces, harassed online, and (at times) successfully gotten fired from their jobs
every now & then someone on the anti-trans side will get cold feet about how openly ugly it's all getting—they want to keep the image of a nice, sensible centrist but it's never enough for them to get off the train

Interesting what overseas kids Elon sympathizes with and which he throws in the woodchipper.
❗️Elon Musk says “the endless slaughter of Ukrainians and Russians must stop” and called for sympathy for Russian conscripts. “Those kids have no choice but to fight and die in drone strikes,” he wrote. His remarks come amid an ongoing dispute over restrictions on Starlink and its use by Ukraine.

thinking fondly again of the college girl at the donut place, who made a little muslim boy bounce giddily out the door after she told him his donut was free, and who waved me away and said "you're good" when it was my turn to pay and then, when asked if there was a deal that day said "i hate my job"

Getting special exemptions for SpaceX that put it into stock indices unprecedentedly early, thereby getting money from big funds that can buy only safe investments, was worth more to Musk than all the hundreds of millions of dollars he’s spent trying to buy elections. Much more. Incredibly corrupt.
james carville gets in the news for a hot minute, again... sensing that, his heir apparent, yglesias, springs from his perch to present himself as the new bastion of defeatism...
A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

It strikes me that Yglesias just has no concept of non-electoral politics whatsoever. He has a set of cookie-cutter advice for political candidates in general elections. He applies this advice to literally everyone all the time. This is dumb for obvious reasons that are hard to miss.

from the bottom of my heart: matthew yglesias seems to desperately want to accede to james carville's spot in politics: chief purveyor of saying selling out on an issue is a smart move for the dems, when he's really just trying to intellectualize his own personal prejudices and hang-ups...
Me: "Even if it was unpopular, are you saying the Democratic Party should not speak out against the president sending migrants who have committed no crimes to be tortured in a foreign gulag?" @mattyglesias.bsky.social: "Yeah." Me: "Just stay silent?" Yglesias: "...You gotta win first."

People were uncomfortable sharing drinking fountains with black people. Their need for comfort doesn't supercede others' need for liberty.
That's great. What about the women that would be uncomfortable sharing a restroom with a trans woman? Because that's still most of the -extremely progressive- women I know. (I don't know any MAGA women)

The New York Times wrote articles that were like "the impossible-to-characterize elusive politics of Elon Musk / he's lost interest in politics" right before he became *literally the largest GOP donor in history* the next election cycle. Twice. Two times!
This would be the most any person has donated in any election cycle. And #2 is also Musk, in 2024.
