El-Sayed disavows the ad. Good. Wish he also said it was bad, but I’ll take it. Cenk can go to hell. www.jta.org/2026/10/26/p...

No, Beth wasn't just cleared of all wrongdoing, it was found "there was harassment of the second respondent by the claimant related to gender reassignment". Beth is the victim here, and even when she is forced to flee to the literal other side of the world they just can't stop bullying her.

Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses aren’t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and people’s power cut in Salvador, indigenous people’s travel restricted
We are watching a coup d’état attempt unfold in real time in Brazil. I’m consumed by desperation.

turns out that voting is a very good way to kick right wing authoritarians out of power
The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government.

Been reading about a lot of very bad but entirely ordinary people throughout history for the next season of Past Lives (Everyday Villains). This guy is utterly typical. 1) Doesn't think he's doing anything wrong. 2) Permission structure in a system of hierarchical authority. 3) Benefits materially.
You can read the full story here (w/ @propublica.org + @nytmag.bsky.social) www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/m...

Sushi in Japan is for rich tourists and corporate expense accounts, not normal people. At nominal exchange rates (eg tourists), the median American is richer than all but the top 5% of Japanese households, and even adjusting for PPP differences they’re comfortably in the top quartile.
@evanwch.bsky.social Most Americans think the Cheesecake Factory is a "nice and fancy restaurant" while the French get farm fresh cheese at gas stations and the Japanese get flawless sushi in subway stations BECAUSE US capitalism has kept us poor and abject. So that's for pointing our the problem.

I fear this stuff sells, if not to the marginal voter but to the Republican base who might not otherwise bother to turn out. The last time I was in Michigan I was peppered with questions by a couple about why "you let Britain be taken over by Muslims". When I objected they asked if I was a Muslim
It seems impossible for our political system to hold the politicians tied to the actual invasion of our Capitol to account, but any random Muslim candidate is reflexively labeled a terrorist.

This reminded me of the 2013 MIT study that judged people's global fame by how many different languages they had a Wikipedia page in, and concluded that by this measure the 5 most famous people in the world were: 1. Jesus 2. Obama 3. Corbin Bleu from High School Musical 4. Confucius 5. Isaac Newton

"This could have been an email." Aragorn whispers. "He ALWAYS pulls this shit in 'Any Other Business" Boromir replies, quietly. "It's why Faramir marked himself as busy when the invite went out."
Elrond tells the long story of the One Ring, from its forging in the Mountain of Fire, to its betrayal of Isildur at the Gladden Fields. Frodo is startled to learn that Elrond himself marched with Gil-Galad in the Last Alliance against Sauron, more than three thousand years ago.

most of the internet is not free, you're just paying in eyeballs the fact that internet advertisement is *effective enough to be worth the spend* bewilders the everliving shit out of me and I wonder how much of the end-of-ZIRP catastrophe is "it wasn't, actually, as it turns out"

If you gave me $446 million American currency units I would be calling lawyers, accountants, and real estate agents in that order. Actually my newly hired army of assistants would be calling real estate agents.
$446 million of his (sometime) reported net worth of $1 trillion means he’s still only spending 0.0446% of his net worth to try to buy elections. put in more concrete terms: if you had $100, this would be like spending less than 5 cents. now tell me again why i should vote against a wealth tax.

A lot of dictatorships try to make these kind of arrangements when things go south. Important to remember there are other kinds of criminal, civil and reputational accountability pardons can’t touch. And if you’re pardoned you have no 5th amendment rights.
“Several conservative organizations …— including the Heritage Foundation and American Moment — have pressed White House counsel to either prepare pardons or put in place funding for the legal fees necessary to defend junior staffers from criminal and congressional probes or potential lawsuits.”
