Imagine if instead of regulating drone risks the normal way (which we did), we instead paid weird bloggers lots of money to worry about superintelligent dogs sprouting thumbs and using drones to kill us. This is pretty much how the US is approaching AI risks and regulations. My latest:

little-flying-robots.ghost.ioWhy We Can't Let Enormous Weirdos Regulate AIImagine if instead of regulating drones via the standard lengthy, boring, and bureaucratic process - which we did - we instead decided, in the name of fostering all-important American drone innovation...

I am a very fast reader. This is SUPERB. Also it’s insane that I have to apply to over 200 jobs and still not have anything when these people can just literally fuck each other and make 8 figures. 😭

TO THAT END If by any chance someone reading this is hiring people in AI policy, white hat security research, open source programming, or even drones. My signal is NoahW.03 and I will send you my resume. Thank you, enjoy your day :) Would be insanely based if @faineg.com reposted this :3

I feel this, I need something that isn't me bouncing between short term contracts and constantly looking for more when I'm not applying to jobs; I used to fair better on the apps:interviews margin but it's exploded to about 280:1 now and it's absolutely not sustainable.

I can't live with my partner and my ESA nearly half the year because I'm out working whatever I can find on whatever coach/spare room I can manage 😭 I don't sleep anymore which -> classic health and MH collapse making every week harder and harder.

Psychogeography of East Bay Sex Cults is my top jeopardy category I'm sad (but ofc it's not surprising) that the nice chill inclusive woke ones never were granted cultural influence vs the ones full of rich weird assholes

Bless you for writing this. I'm in a monthly discussion group with normie friends, and tonight's topic is the "AI is dangerous" article that Bill Gates wrote to distract from his presence in the Epstein files. I'm thinking about using my turn in the discussion to read your piece aloud.

I saw a long Twitter thread once about how the basilisk cult was like, *exactly* Calvinism in every doctrinal particular Haven't been able to find it again, though

There’s something about self-important assholes interpeting relatively normal texts that makes them all select the bits that make them the special ones. (Actually reading Calvin yields very different results than listening to Calvinist bros)

in the spirit of bluesky i suggest the we call them 'bizarre little men' like the slut gnomes of berlin, which frankly sounds like a band name these people would think is cool.

It’s so funny to compare employer AI guidance with AI proponents/rationalists online. It’s like 30 pages of IT settings and stuff to avoid unwanted access and to understand and verify stuff before using it. The workplace enthusiasts are still often annoying but much more grounded.

Every time you spell out the intensity of the weirdness and pathological preoccupations, I mutter “Scott Alexander is a PSYCHIATRIST.”

The Bay Area does have a number of regular organizations that work on practical AI regulations, such as how to prevent housing or employment discrimination. It'd be great if they got more of a spotlight and funding.

On another note I think one reason this whole thing has flown under the radar for so long is that they appear to have stayed out of local politics here in the East Bay.

This is not unique to them though, there's a larger issue of media being national/global now leading to more voters who are really into national or international politics but don't know who their school board members are.
