Why is the U.S. public so much more negative on AI than almost anyone else? Well, I think the fact that the U.S. AI industry is being lead by a bunch of very visible, crazy weirdos who talk about how AI will take everyone’s job and maybe kill us all the time is a pretty key factor.

People around the world have interestingly divergent opinions on AI - but most agree that they expect it to cause more job loss than growth: www.pewresearch.org/global/2026/...

... and if a few million perish here and there, "oh, well"!... elimination of the population is one of their goals, anyway... see how that works ?

& they are not going to get any returns on their investments anywhere close to making up for all the money they've pumped into it This is also why they are pumping AI into EVERYTHING & nobody wants it, nobody is asking for it. They are enshittifying *everything* bc they are chasing a massive payout

My asian friends who are all English second language loooove it. 2 or 3 used to send important emails to me to clean up or "Americanize" the structure and syntax. Not anymore lol!

I think this acts as a compounding force for why some Americans aren't happy with it. Being good at written communication used to be a valuable skill; now chatbots can turn anyone's writing Good Enough, especially if the higher-ups don't mind the obvious AI tells.

1) most of the data centres, which people loathe, are in the USA 2) AI has been more aggressively marketed in the USA than anywhere else by far

Yeah AIpocalypse is an entirely natural continuation of the Hell Joseon narrative for folks there. The Aussies, meanwhile, are just naturally contrary bastards (and we love them for it).

If they only knew the rather disturbing details of what I have recently discovered as the Epsteinization of the AI ecosystem , the outrage would be 100 fold. Mainstream media doesn’t want to poke that bear. Wonder why?

I am sure it differs, in much of Europe and elsewhere they probably have faith that their governments will protect them from AI for example. In the US we have been the 'fish in the barrel' for a long time now so we assume AI will enrich the oligarchs by screwing the rest of us.

Might be that the same people pushing AI in NA are the same ones that pushed crypto currency, NFTs. Not to mention the big tech companies are saying they own your information you put on on their platform form and can profit off of it. While anything you buy off them, you don't own.

Then also consider the environmental issues and the theft of intellectual property to train the models, and maybe you'll get a fuller picture of why many people despise this bullshit.

For once, Americans are smarter than the rest of the world. Literally the first time in my 47 years Earth that has happened 😂

Theirs has literally been the Worst PR campaign I have ever heard of. Just goes to show what a bubble they’re in though that they were taken completely aback by the public backlash.

In the US they presented a very real worse case scenario (everyone loses their jobs) and an impossible best case scenario (it cures cancer). When those are the two ends of the spectrum they talk about all the time of course we'd be down on AI

In places with a viable safety net, health care, etc. you can potentially imagine expanding those services and having something of a job-free civilization. In America all of that is ludicrous on its face.

US has min-maxing. People are under no delusion that they won't be squeezed down to the last drop in the hopes of making the number go up just a tiny bit more. If a "90% instead of 100% slavery" vote shows up in senate, we know a Manchin will fold and drag us all down with a cowardly "the deficit".

It's also because of the regulation framework. The EU is very good about their regulation on such matters, places like Canada more middle of the road. In the US the same people behind AI and telling us it'll steal our money and kill us are also at the levers of power.

China: Okay we can't *just* fire people for AI if it causes damage to society. Also we have a low cost of living so you can be fine for a bit. America: If you die on the streets it just means you probably weren't white enough or something. Honestly a win in my book.

still waiting for someone to credibly explain how AI is going to help the ordinary person live a better life for more money or for less work or for saving the earth for their progeny...Nope - still only benefits the tech oligarch and their investors.
