So in a huge surprise to absolutely no one, it turns out that NIH director Jay Bhattacharya's new journal based on the premise of letting his friends and only his friends publish essentially whatever they want is full of crackpot nonsense from retired cranks.

"AI will destroy humanity" has always and only been an attempt to distract from "AI will leak your login credentials to the internet"
Three weeks ago AI founders were all over the press making vague but portentous comments about the existential risks and power of their models. This week their models are part of a widespread security failure around critical systems such as your bank account..a more immediate and serious risk 1/

Not a single word of this is hyperbolic in the slightest. Buy your friends in cybersecurity the drink or chocolate of their choice right now. We are not doing well
wrote about "Black October," the PHP vulnerability, and the AI-fueled dread and panic I'm seeing among almost all of the cybersecurity experts I've ever known. I think people w/ LLMs are brute forcing software the same way they brute forced social media w/ slop www.404media.co/php2shell-bl...

“Departures from these practices should never be countenanced because they risk allowing prosecutors to impact national elections.” -Todd Blanche on DOJ’s 60-day rule, September 2024
Q: The typical practice is DOJ doesn't usually release charges this close to an election. Even though Ms Lucas isn't on the ballot, her daughter is. Can you speak to the timing? BLANCHE: The 60 day or 90 day practice is not in writing. That's not part of the justice manual. There's nothing improper

Voters who Googled how to donate to Talarico got an AI answer that led them to give to a different senator. A network of fake news websites seeded messaging about state & local candidates that AI answers picked up on. My story on how the AI midterms are going: www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...

Just going to be straight here — no pun intended: I am the only journalist who has been covering this issue in depth, was often the only journalist at hearings, and was the only one explaining what DOJ was actually arguing here. Support my work if you can: www.lawdork.com/subscribe
BREAKING: SCOTUS rejects Trump admin's request to allow it to end gender-affirming medical care in prisons — a significant, if tentative, rejection of one of the admin's most extreme anti-trans arguments. Only Thomas and Alito noted they would have granted the stay. More to come: www.lawdork.com

Democratic-aligned group Progress Action Fund has released a PRO-trans ad, attacking Republicans for being creepy in bathrooms. It will run in Texas and Ohio, and is expected to reach millions. You have to see the ad itself. Subscribe to support our journalism.

Yes. The conservative scheme for education is a three-way split: high-priced academies for the children of the wealthy, religious instruction to brainwash the middle class, and a rump of prison-like public schools to discipline the lower class into obedience.
the other thing is that conservatives resolutely do not see the purpose of education as providing social mobility but as reifying and deepening existing inequalities of status. they are as hostile to low income students getting admission to elite institutions as they are black ones.

Trump-friendly oligarchs are buying up major media with the regime's help. They control CNN, CBS, Fox, TikTok, Meta, X and major local TV chains. Yet Mike Johnson is still claiming liberal bias. The real media conspiracy is the corporate consensus to normalize Johnson and other right-wing radicals.
Mike Johnson offers a conspiracy theory to explain away his party's dire polling: "I believe there's a concerted effort between Democrats and the mainstream media that's openly biased in their favor to discourage the Republican side"

ultimately it's shit like this that makes the decline of birth rates and resulting demographic skewing towards old people self-reinforcing. Greedy, wealthy retired people voting to destroy the funding for public services they relied on throughout their life now that they no longer need them
“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

Okay, so @kathryntewson has discovered a set of linked, commonly controlled websites that are authoritatively giving false information on the difference between "attorney" and "lawyer," and are almost certainly AI generated. I want to talk about why AI gets this wrong.
The linked website is not just non-authoritative, it has actively false information on it. Relying on the (almost certainly AI-generated) legal information on this website is VERY DANGEROUS.

You want to know if throwing trans people under the bus will lose my vote? I bet you do. But I only tell my plans to those I trust. It will lose *some* people’s votes, and you knew that. That’s the chance you decided to take. Don’t play dice with people’s lives if you want to know my plans.

(Reuters) - The order to limit a satellite system used by Ukraine for battlefield communications and drone operations came from inside the White House, according to two US officials and a Western official briefed on the matter. @reuters.com 🇺🇦 www.reuters.com/world/europe...
💯. I'm not sure that this phenomenon is on the rise overall, as in the past, the less-literate weren't likely to have their opinions broadcast; but it's a problem that people who can't or won't understand their enemies' perspectives now grow huge social media followings as political commentators.
Folks complain about rising illiteracy on social media, but I think the deeper issue isn't inability to parse straightforward sentences but a cultivated unwillingness to model different viewpoints and social contexts. Performative dunking rewards *not bothering to understand* the enemy.

Because my job can be a real bummer, when I am searching for instances of sexual violence among men in a defined group, you don't search for "sexual assault," you search for "hazing." We have euphemized language because we really, really don't want to address this in any real terms.

I think my realization wasn't that I was weird, but that there was such a thing as normal. And, probably Kindergarten.
QUESTION OF THE DAY: This sounds like a joke question, but it isn’t. If it doesn’t apply to you, fine. But it’s a serious question with different levels of meaning. And I am genuinely curious. When did you first realize you were weird?
