sometimes a youtuber or post will reference gta vi like its an upcoming extinction level event, like it’s destined to win every award and be the greatest game ever made and nothing afterwards will eve be the same and its like. we all live in different worlds

That’s more or less how i remember the hype for Cyberpunk 2077 on Reddit. And then the game came out and everyone was extremely upset it didn’t live up to their expectations.

It's all but guaranteed to be the (monetarily) biggest entertainment launch in history, but yea that's completely divorced from what creative impact it might have on the rest of the industry or whether it'll even be good lol

And a few months later the dumbest guys on the earth will try to figure out why it didn't do All That and they'll decide it was because a woman was in it

i find it very funny when people talk about it that way. whether its mentioned unironically or as a joke, it makes it seem like the video game equivalent of the rapture. i wonder what the world will look like after gta 6

i’m not even really a hater. i was when v came out. so invested in how serious game critics needed to be honest and interrogate its status in culture. ah to be young lmao. now i’m like oh yeah right that’s this year

As a dev who's worked in AAA, the impact it has on the entire gaming market and console sales and how saturated of a point that is and how every lead/director/etc references that makes it impossible for me to not take seriously even though on no level do I or will I ever care about Grand Theft Auto.

I'm sure it'll make one bajillion dollars but it will also have the exact same South Park tier writing and while still really fucking annoying and awful that almost feels quaint in the cultural landscape

Most of the rockstar games missions are “drive to x location while talking to someone” and then shoot some guys, and drive somewhere else. Really broke the illusion for me when I played red dead and GTAV back to back (10+ years ago??)

I still always think of the gag in Saints Row 2 where one of your guys goes over a really meticulous plan for how you're going to rob a casino and then Johnny Gat knocks over all the little models and says "how about instead we just run inside and shoot every motherfucker between us and the vault"

Yeah nothing makes me feel more disconnected from parts of games culture than everyone’s foaming obsession with the GTA series Almost every Rockstar game I’ve played has been competently done in a way that I am disinterested in, with controls and movement that feel horrible to me

At least rdr2 has a great story. Like I never want to *play* the game, but I think about that story a lot. My time with gta 5 has been memory holed because I didn't care about any character or find it funny or enjoy playing it.

I really like V and RDR2 but it's just gonna be more of that then. Those games haven't evolved at all really they're just really pretty open worlds and decent fun

i really try to avoid “i’m an intellectual and on a level above the average NPC” style thinking for obv reasons but every time i’m reminded of gta and the absurd pull it has with the average gamer it gets really hard
