you would think the normalisation of live service stuff, lootboxes and battle-passes in everything, check in daily for your ACE PASS REWARDS etc would make me begrudgingly accept it as the cost of doing business but i've gone the other way. i never wanna deal with this stuff in a game again

Really hoping GW3 continues the Guild Wars tradition of being absolutely filled with people who like to talk so i can get my social fix. So many Multiplayer games are about the MTX and not the community which really makes it worse every time.

it turns out the mental tax of trying to block out increasingly insistent store tabs is in fact mentally taxing and "it has no impact on gameplay" stopped helping a few Fortnites ago 😭

The worst I got was playing R6:Siege in college and occasionally buying something. It was impossible to ignore the game’s update quality degrading as monetization increased, so I stopped buying anything and I bailed a bit before they started battle passes. Clearly the R6 community didn’t care.

Was already pretty heavily against monetization in games and didn’t like that I caved and bought things, and ever since then I’ve only grown more and more opposed. Somehow I’m the crazy one in most people’s eyes anymore.

fun fact if you pre-order the pc version of ac8 on anything other than steam, the smallprint clarifies that you actually get a PS5 code for AC Zero not a PC version lol

i also just saw that there's a deluxe edition that gives you 3 days "advance access", and here i thought only xbox was still pushing this crap very cool we have to read the steam descriptions like food labels at this point

Maybe if squeezing every cent out of the hobby meant that people got to make games sustainably I could get behind it. But no, it's loot boxes and battle passes in every game, and also the entire studio gets laid off immediately.

one day quite a while back i realised video games are the only software on the planet i actively pay for that are shitty on pretty much every level before even getting to the aggressive monetisation and yeah man, why am i doing this to myself. i should have paid for winrar.

I'm actually so fucking over GaaS. It doesn't matter if it's the GTA online flavor, or the Shooter/BR flavor (Fortnite or CoD, pick your poison), or anything inbetween. Just let me play a game and quit trying to extract every ounce of value out of me. This informs my preference for indie

same, you burn out on that stuff once and the thought of looking at it ever again just makes you nauseous. The skinner box rat race is evil enough in free games, choosing to implement it in a game you already have to pay the upfront cost for just feels insane.

You take a break and the grind is just insurmountable feeling when you get back it's crazy. Marvel Rivals, which theoretically has a nicer than average MTX system, really doesn't help. Which, ya know, good. I'm happier playing more single player indie games now.

pokemon tcg pocket maybe the undisputed worst user experience I've ever had with a game. unsung problem of the dark patterns is that u always have to press 5 buttons to do what should take 1 and it's extremely annoying

Realizing how DEEPLY unhappy daily log in time wasters make me has been a real game changer. I actively avoid anything that breathes any of those buzzwords. Major life improvement.

Final Fantasy XIV is the only game I (begrudgingly, with much moaning and groaning) tolerate this with, and I think most people would say it's pretty light on those elements. With VERY few exceptions, if I catch even a whiff of that crap in any other game, I will never, ever touch it. Full stop.

ff14 is very funny to me as like. all the rpg stuff is basically gone. that is an instanced game about tightly balanced multiplayer combat trials and raids. but if they stopped putting in annoying engagement traps they would have no reason to charge monthly anymore

Yeah, like, I do love the game for plenty of reasons, but the funny thing is that playing it for as long as I have has shown me just how susceptible I am to sunk cost, engagement traps, etc. And realizing that has made me extremely averse to ever playing any other game that has those.

Some games like Rivals of Aether 2 at least have the battle passes all available forever so you can just fill out the ones you want. It’s pretty rad. Would you say that’s the solution to battle passes, or would you rather just not deal with them at all?

when they started doing this stuff for Destiny 2 it totally eroded away my desire to play it, i mean, leveling up and getting good gear again every time there was an expansion was already enough of a grind, and i already had all the vanity gear i would ever want since like, 2019. except cowboy hat

the fucked up part is that if they stopped deleting all the stupid missions destiny 2 would now, finally, at the end of it all be a Really Good Game but they fomo'd too close to the sun

I like Deep Rock Galactic's model cause all their season passes are completely free, you can go back and play past ones at any time, and once a season is over, the free cosmetics are added to the normal cosmetic loot pool. All other games can go shove it

I don't want to have to think about all that shit! I don't have time to think about all that shit! I just want to log in a few times a week and shoot stuff! At this point the fact that they're trying to steal my wallet is secondary to the fact that it's a fuckin headache.

I literally do not play games that do any of these things. It's not even like a principals thing really. Though it is that too in a sense. It's more that anytime I've attempted to meet a game like that half way, well either it ruins the fun for me or the game itself is just super not to my tastes.

Honestly sometimes its both. Say a Marvel Rivals, which was fun enough, but without engaging with the cruft lacks meat. But the cruft is all stuff I have zero interest in. So really there's just no middle ground for me. Seeing that stuff is just an easy indicator that I shouldn't play a game 🤔
