Post

I am loving the sharing in the comments of correct history about the important contributions of the Black Panthers! But I also urge us all to do some critical reflecting on whether we're bringing their values into our everyday efforts and interactions

Doing anything to correct the disinformation about anything to do with racial history is met with howls of outrage by the fragile egos of White Nationalists. The idea that the whites did anything wrong and were anything other than the heroes of the world is not tolerated by them.

Are we succumbing to the temptation to mock & shame, or are we attempting to build bridges with our neighbours? Are we dismissing our fellow working class people as beyond reaching, and thus the world beyond saving? Or are we experimenting with what actually works or doesn't when we talk to people?

I particularly say this because "building bridges" specifically implies compromise. I. Will. Not. Compromise. With. Fascists. They can come to the table and talk with me, as soon as they stop being fucking nazis.

If you've come this far, I also offer this thread for a bit of reflection as well. Not everyone in the comments has been up to the challenge of engaging thoughtfully, but I know people are hurting and I'm choosing to try anyway because I make a practice of hope.

It's very interesting to see the people responding to this post by reflexively dismissing *all* Trump voters being 100% unreachable. It comes off as a defense mechanism against considering that we are not powerless and might actually have some ability to make a difference

The uneducated of the US far right ridicule everyone else & insist their screwball fantasies are real. The MAGAdiots are just sadomasochist sociopaths who want pain & suffering, there is no redemption possible. They will pretend reform just to get another chance to somehow torture others.

Just for your information, Clarence Thomas the Supreme Court stupid justice was a black panther, member specialized and burning down cities like Atlanta and LA Clarence Thomas machine guns all as many as you want. This man has no education and look what he’s doing.

2/ Most of the protesters were in wheelchairs and unable to walk. How were they going to eat? BPP recognized the Intersectionality between ADAPT’s cause and their own. BPP joined in the protest by providing hot meals to the 100 protesters AND helped them when they needed help moving.

3/ BPP saw in ADAPT fellow travelers who suffered analogs of their on oppression. How many geniuses, artists, medical scientists were discarded by society wasting all of that unrealized potential. Their dignity, and humanity were stripped from both.

4/ Bigotry and ignorance robbed us all of the immeasurable potential of African Americans and the disabled. Both of whom were effectively shut out of any opportunity for full freedom to participate in the USA with no barriers raised by discrimination & ignorance.

Btw, here is something else my AI research team turned up about the Viet Nam war protests that you may be interested in. I hadn't realized this guy had played a huge role in civil rights & integrating American television. Netflix recently released "Sunday Best". www.legacy.com/news/celebri...

legacy.comEd Sullivan: Civil Rights TrailblazerFor more than 20 years, most Americans knew what they were doing on Sunday nights: watching “The Ed Sullivan Show” on CBS, eager to see which new talent or old…

I saw every single show. 1st gen screen (TV) baby. TV was live and brilliant because of that. The 1st writers of SNL were my age.TV sparked a creativity in any of us that had the gift. Being smart in no way inspires imagination.Einstein said intelligence without imagination is worthless.

I guess I’m so pissed off about the havoc the uneducated MAGAts are creating that I’m uninterested in teaching them. When they lose their Medicaid and SNAP benefits they may become teachable, but not now. They’re very busy hating brown and black people.

One person's terrorist is another's freedom fighter. At the end of my eightieth decade, I'm coming to realise that the Black Panthers were more the latter. That was not what I thought at the time, but we're never too old to learn, and I have wonderful grandchildren to guide & inspire me.

Yep, that's what works. Providing what's missing. I've taught 60 year olds to read & kindergartners. We all respond to things that respect our capacity to learn, things that are interesting, things that encourage creativity and movement. We are wired to learn & grow - the right environment matters.

The Panthers had a food program as well. What got them in trouble was walking around with long arms in public, which was legal. Reagan almost burst a vessel in his brain seeing that and couldn't get to the legislature fast enough to have them change the law, which they did.

Half-truths are as bad as lies. They MIGHT have done some of these things. However, you're making them out to look like they were saints. They were not They were the black equivalent of Hell's Angeles, and that's straight out of the mouth from a former member. There's a mini documentary on YouTube.

True! My dad was a Black Panther and he taught me to read at 3. The Panthers were big on education, both Huey and Bobby attended college. I can still hear my dad saying, “read a book, that’s where they keep the secrets at.” Thank you for triggering a core memory! 😊

People also need to hear that they met and prevented violence with violence. It's not the bigots that are willing to listen and learn that cause and perpetuate suffering, it's the ones that won't stop unless they fear real consequences.

The billionaire class and their millionaire minions don't want to deal with people capable of thinking for themselves, they want people to do what they are told. Consensus driven by manipulation and lies demonstrates lack of respect for the sovereignty that the Constitution was designed to provide.

I was very small and living in Oakland when my mom would take me to the breakfast program the Panthers ran. I dont really remember much except the people were very kind and the food was good.

The Black Panthers also worked within, and for, a united community that was held together by common suffering, injustice and tyranny. They (rightfully) knew whom were their oppressors were (read: white fascists). The ignorance of the MAGAts is hateful, self-inflicted, incurious and irredeemable.

Google translated:That's an interesting contradiction. Trump supporters are known for their ignorance, but it seems like in this case they showed at least a modicum of human compassion. Or is this just further proof of their ignorance? Where do you see compassion with trump Supporters?

I have an autobiographical cartoon about the era. A leaflet we made in our collective was reprinted in a book called “The Portland Black Panthers.” The authors thought the Panthers made it!

Totally agree—and what’s even more alarming is that willful ignorance is often marketed as “peace of mind” or “choosing your own truth.” Meanwhile, those who hold power are more than happy to watch people self-censor their curiosity. Feudalism in the digital age just wears better clothes.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot with respect to historical knowledge. What is the easiest way to convey historical facts? I really want to start a YouTube channel to make the basics super easy to access… maybe a podcast. But something by is for us designed to help where we are vulnerable. 🤔

Yeah… and by accessible, I’m talking about in snippets and language those 40 and under prefer to consume information. That’s hard with history, but we need to figure it out. I’m just finishing Michael Harriot’s book Black AF History. Somehow it’s a comedy and historical text. That got me thinking.

The free lunch program is schools is thanks to the Black Panthers as well. They made sure kids had breakfast before school. They started out to protect US from the kkk & I guess the government didn’t like that since the government Protected the kkk 🤷🏽‍♀️

In fact I would argue that Hilary’s profile makes this intellectual error. She says capitalism is bad. It is bad and good. It is complicated. Trump has done good things and bad things. Obama has done good and bad. We need to stop the propagandistic activism and embrace again centrism, thoughtfulness

And intellectual honesty focused on maximizing good while recognizing every choice is complex with good and bad results. We should not support individuals or groupings or ideologies, or any tribe. We should focus on results and character and being ethical. The far left and far right are both

Incapable of operating in the grey and making a positive difference. There is room for the right and left coalescing around the center. Sidelining the far left and far right will enable the reasonable center to come back and get us moving forward again.

Nope, nope, nope…no equivocation. No “both sides.” What this MAGA administration is doing has no comparison in history. President Obama was one of the best presidents and human beings in American history, while Trump is hands down…the very worst. This is not “politics as usual!” This is evil!

Every group in history did both bad and good. The black panthers did bad stuff. And good stuff. So did Al Queda. So did the US government. So did israel. The world is full of grey. Always tell the truth, but the whole truth. Bad and good. Be intellectually honest. It takes more time but is real.

Been saying- we need teach-ins. I’m planning to do a Zoom class tomorrow where we will be taught to use race-class solidarity messaging to get past the things that keep all of us workers from getting together and dealing with this sh*t.

Fucking thank you, I've been so sick of the "fuck 'em, they voted for this" attitude butthurt libs and internet lefties have had since November. I say it all the time: they'd rather be right than change hearts and minds.

I think there is a difference when people are willing to learn. Trump's fans aren't willing to learn. They feel honor in their ignorance and loyalty. I can understand this sentiment for independents who voted for him.

There is no honor in ignorance just humiliation & shame as was shown this week when Powell showed trump we not all his flunkies & sycophants numbers never change lying about numbers is not as easy lying about policy I have a lot of trouble reading but I find ways 2 learn anyone can do it now days YT

Your not prob 320 million Americans feel the same way and a few billion inhabitants of this planet can only wish for a stroke to incapacitate him into a dribbling mess or a giant coronary to strike him dead Wanted him arrested & do HARD time for treason but no joy there Jan 6th 5 years later nothing

The Black Panthers didn’t just carry rifles—they carried books. They taught kids to read. Served free breakfasts. Taught Black history in the mornings and political education in barbershops by night. Because you can’t fight the system if you can’t read what it’s doing to you. #resist #nokings

NOW, Activists from 10 countries incl. 7 Americans in Handala freedom flotilla have been KIDNAPPED by Israel, Bcz the flotilla carries humanitarian aid to feed the starving children of Gaza, trying to break Israel's blockade on Gaza, Protect the Handala crews. Stop #GazaGenocide #StopArmingIsrael

La Takhaf Wa La Tahzan@latakhaf-latahzan.bsky.social

Freedom Flotilla ship, The Handala is hours away from Gaza where kids, women, & men are starving to death bcz of Israel's cruel blockade At least 83 children in Gaza have died due to starvation since the start of #GazaGenocide Protect Handala, watch the live stream: www.youtube.com/live/A4hF5rA...

The Black Panthers fed hungry kids breakfast. I know a lot of people know this, but nothing in my public school education taught me this, nothing in media fed to white middle class kids of my age showed me this. We have always been spoon fed biased info, have to overcome that.

People who hadn't had a chance at education, rather than those who willfully passed it up. Even scorned it. Or scorned the very concepts that underpin the idea of education. There's a difference.

Lest you forget, not one MAGA has been identified as a reader, they can't teach what they don't know and can't do. They just follow where the red line leads.

I’m a pretty staunch liberal and I myself believe we need to work with the other side and educate them to fight the common enemy atm. Mentioned this in a Reddit comment that was mocking the republicans that regret everything and I got called a nazi sympathizer….if we mock them it will stay the same

Let's not forget about Donald Trump He can't read or write but he is great leader when it comes to teaching people to hate. He has inspired legions to rewrite the rules of civility and decency. And he is making it easier for struggling students by eliminating science and math from school curriculum.

The Panthers cannot be recreated. They were a product of the social conditions of the 1960s. However, they do stand as an example of how to build community and solidarity and leverage those into struggle. They built working class solidarity and shook the state. We need to shake it harder this time.

And that’s exactly why they murdered them, keep them ignorant and you can always control them, ignorance is the greatest weapon you can use against any people. That’s what Trump and Heritage Foundation are trying to do with banned books, destroying education departments, controlling media, etc.

"the Mulford Act, passed in 1967, restricted the open carry of loaded firearms in public and was largely seen as a direct response to the Black Panthers' armed patrols and public demonstrations"
