The fantasy of Ace Combat is becoming something greater than human — faster, stronger, more beautiful and terrible. This journey has consumed me. Have you ever known that you are a triumph? youtu.be/5Cr0p0SmDxU

This is basically how I feel when I play classic Doom and Quake. I am tankman or bunnyman, respectively. Also why I felt the VR versions that add more human physics like hands that pick up guns never worked for me, the more basic VR ports where my hands or even my face just *is gun*, are way better.

Jacob, I emplore you, please watch the OVA series 'Yukikaze'. I don't want to spoil anything but it's totally thematically in sync with what you're talking about in this essay, and just an all-round great series. Really good video btw, nice work!

As a longtime fan of the series, I appreciate the vector your video approaches AC. Similar to the other AC (Armored Core), experiencing the arc of mastering the initially intimidating controls become the fundamental component of what makes these types of games so compelling, so unlike anything else.

"Morty! I turned myself into a video game plane to get out of family therapy Morty!" "Oh w-wow Rick this is just like that new Jacob Geller video on Ace Combat." "No it's completely different Morty he stole the idea from me! All his videos were my idea Morty! I'm Video Game Plane Rick!"

rlly wish this would've addressed ace combat's roots in japanese robot anime, since it pretty much is one if you swap the planes for robots, in terms of its structure and narrative, how everything is designed for and interfaced with robot, it's a long-standing post-ww2 japanese narrative tradition

Mobile Suit Breakdown and Great Gundam Project. MSB is a long term sociological study of Gundam (half rewatch, half study session), and GGP is... well, the hosts half jokingly say that Gundam made them communists.

reminded of racing games in a few spots of this video. abstracted controls; learning how your specific machine works and doesn’t; the way I start with TPP and end up driving from the hood or cockpit as I get more comfortable and attempt maximizing my performance. great video!

careful, you're gonna get like five or six really cool sci-fi authors, at least one extremely uncool author i'd like to launch into the sun, and several hundred peanut-gallery posters trying to get you into hard kink now

Steamlink, but it was a giant pain in the ass alongside all the meta software. I've heard Virtual Desktop is the best, if I do more VR I'll probably try that.

@jacobgeller.com just an update, so I uninstalled all META software and use new Virtual Desktop BETA with the USB cable option, and using AVC1 codec, smoothest and easiest Vr experience I’ve ever had. Every single game is locked 90fps without a single genuine issue. Rediscovered VR now.

Thank you very much for the reply :) I’m excited for steam frame with steam os to see if Vr finally becomes something that doesn’t require 3 hours to iron out every weird hitch and stutter to just enjoy a game :/

jacob geller i know buying $80 worth of DLC to fly a singular plane is bullshit but if you want the feeling ace combat gives you times a hundred (alongside a hundred times that of frustration) you gotta give Digital Combat Simulator (DCS) a shot. or maybe not it's not for everyone. rad setup btw!!!

vtol vr is also pretty god damn sick but with the caveat that it's virtual joystick only and doesn't allow physical joysticks without mods

I get it. You should try DCS (digital combat simulator) It is basically learning to actually fly the planes for real. Really rewarding and fun if you want to feel how planes fly in a more realistic environment and you have the time and patience.

Now we're cooking with gas!

Also I laughed out loud when you discussed how bad the VKB software is. I despise dealing with it. I thought my NXT EVOs were broken when I got them because they didn’t calibrate them properly and they told me to just set it up in the software like that's easy to do.

I’ve seen a lot of Ace Combat videos in my frantic, obsessive journey with the franchise over the past year and a half. Some have been really good. Some have been kinda amateurish. This trumps basically every single one of them. A bsky comment really can’t do justice to how good this is.

Also, tbqh you really need to play the rest of the series. As cool as the "Holy Trinity" are they're overly represented in the Ace Combat fandom and become the only thing many talk about. You need to go through it all. Earn your wings, claim your spot in the sky among the rest of us

This is perhaps still one of the most poignant and resonant passages I have read in any piece of fiction. WARHOUND got me into the scene, but I think Steel Jaws is what kept me here. Love, dignity and understanding ❤️

It’s very surreal to see a YouTuber play a series you love and have exactly the experience and takeaway you would hope for - just listened to it twice at work

"i bet jacob geller would get a kick out of helicopter story" said i shortly before jacob geller started talking about helicopter story

You talk about it a bit in the Nebula exclusive video but you really really should play the Ace Combat 3 fan translation. There's a lot in that game that directly supports the thesis of this video and I think you'd get a lot out of it!

came here to say exactly this! Ace combat 3 covers all of the themes Jacob mentioned in the video, even if playing it is a slog compared to what comes after
